How to Unlock the Pantry and Get the Pantry Key in Resident Evil Requiem

The Chef patrolling the Care Center's West Wing carries the key, and one Hemolytic Injector drops him instantly.

The Pantry sits just off the Kitchen on the ground floor of the West Wing in the Rhodes Hill Care Center, and it stays locked no matter how many times you rattle the handle. It is an optional room, so nothing in the main story pushes you toward it. It is also one of the best early detours in the game, because it holds Grace’s first charm, a Requiem round, and a pile of crafting material.

Quick answer: Kill the Chef roaming the West Wing ground floor, loot the Pantry Key from his body, then return to the Kitchen and use it on the Pantry door. On Insanity, the key is instead inside the locked Closet in the Waiting Room, which needs the Level 1 ID Wristband.

Where the Pantry Key is by difficulty

The key does not sit on a shelf waiting for you. On most settings it is carried by the enormous butcher-knife zombie who works the Kitchen, and the only way to pry it loose is to put him down. Insanity moves it somewhere safer, which spares you the fight but costs you a wristband.

The key’s description reads: “A key with a tag that says ‘Pantry’. It’s sticky to the touch.”

Where the Chef patrols in the West Wing

You first meet him in the Kitchen, carving up meat you probably do not want identified. Once you have had that encounter and made it back to the Central Hall, he stops standing at his counter and starts walking a route through the West Wing ground floor instead.

If he is not in the Kitchen when you come back with a plan, check these spots. He moves slowly and loudly, so listening is usually faster than looking.

  • The corridor outside the Parlor, where he walks a loop
  • The Dining Room and the passage connecting it to the Kitchen
  • Near Cold Storage and the Filing Room in the top-left of the map

Tip: the Kitchen is the cleanest place to fight him. Elsewhere on the floor, the noise pulls ordinary zombies in behind you.

Kill the Chef with a Hemolytic Injector

Shooting him works, but he soaks up an enormous amount of ammo and hits hard enough to cut Grace in half if he grabs her at low health. The Hemolytic Injector removes all of that. It is a stealth-only weapon that kills most zombies instantly, and the Chef is no exception.

Gather one Scrap. Reliable spots include the shelf in the bottom-left corner of the Waiting Room and the Closet. You only need a single piece for one injector.
Collect 60 Infected Blood. Drain it from a blood container in the Care Center, then check your inventory to confirm you are at or above 60 before crafting.
Open the crafting menu and combine 1 Scrap with 60 Blood to make the Hemolytic Injector. Equip it so you are not fumbling through menus when the Chef turns his back.

Move into the West Wing and track the Chef down. Stay crouched the whole way so he does not spot you and start a chase you did not plan for.

Tuck into a side room such as the Filing Room and let him walk past. Waiting for him to commit to a direction is safer than trying to cut across his path.

Follow him from behind while still crouched and use the Hemolytic Injector on his back. The kill is instant, and no other zombies are drawn to it.

Loot his body for the Pantry Key. The prompt reads “Pantry Key”, and the key lands in your Quest Items, not your weapon wheel.

If you would rather not craft anything, the Requiem hand cannon is the other reliable option. It takes roughly two headshots on normal difficulty plus a few smaller rounds, and the Pantry itself refunds a Requiem bullet, so the ammo cost mostly cancels out.

Open the Pantry door in the Kitchen

Walk back to the Kitchen and interact with the Pantry door. With the key in your inventory the lock prompt resolves automatically and the door swings open. That is your confirmation. If the door still refuses, you either missed the body loot or you are standing at one of the warped doors elsewhere on the floor, which no key opens.

One timing detail matters for Grace. If you reach the Pantry early, she can only claim what is inside after escaping the Basement. Going out of your way for it sooner is still worth it if you want an extra save, a spare Requiem bullet, and her first charm as quickly as possible.

What’s inside the Pantry

The room is a cold, freezer-like storage space, and it is stocked well enough to justify the detour on its own. Some entries only show up on specific difficulty settings or on repeat playthroughs.

The warped cabinet and Leon’s Connoisseur Charm

There is a second lock inside the room. Grace cannot force the warped cabinet, and interacting with it only returns the line “The door is warped and won’t open.” Leon can open it, and doing so gives him the Connoisseur Charm, a universal charm that increases a weapon’s firepower.

For that reason the Pantry rewards being opened before Leon explores the Mansion, which happens once Grace starts hunting the third key. If you would rather skip the Chef fight entirely as Grace, you can also leave the room alone and let Leon kill him and take the key later, though Grace then loses the early charm and the extra save.
