Blizzard Reveals an Open-World StarCraft Shooter Coming in 2030

The first new StarCraft in over a decade drops real-time strategy for a boots-on-the-ground shooter led by former Far Cry director Dan Hay.

The first new StarCraft in over a decade drops real-time strategy for a boots-on-the-ground shooter led by former Far Cry director Dan Hay.

Blizzard used its BlizzCon stage to unveil the first new StarCraft game in more than a decade, and it is not the real-time strategy title long-time fans might have expected. Simply called STARCRAFT, the game trades the top-down RTS view for a ground-level shooter, marking the biggest shift the franchise has taken since it began.

Quick answer: STARCRAFT is an open-world shooter announced at BlizzCon, led by former Far Cry director Dan Hay, targeting a 2030 release at the earliest.

What Blizzard announced

The new game is the first fully original StarCraft entry since StarCraft 2, and the first attempt in nearly 20 years to bring the series into a shooter format. Instead of commanding armies from above, you play from a first-person, on-the-ground perspective as part of the Terran Dominion’s forces.

Blizzard says the game will respect the established StarCraft lore while opening room for new stories. The framing centers on the Dominion’s soldiers and the cost of holding the line against the Zerg swarm, captured in this description tied to the reveal:

The sons and daughters of the Dominion answered the call when mankind needed them most. Their courage held the line. Their sacrifice bought us another day. Now the call comes to you. Carry their strength forward. No matter the cost.

One key detail sets this project apart from Blizzard’s earlier shooter attempts: it is being built as an open-world game rather than a level-based, mission-by-mission structure. Beyond that, concrete gameplay information has not been shared.

Who is leading development

The project is headed by Dan Hay, the former Far Cry boss who joined Blizzard in 2022 to run its survival division. That background in large, open-ended shooters lines up with the open-world direction the game is taking.

The announce trailer

Blizzard debuted the game with a three-minute cinematic trailer titled “Dominion.” It follows a group of human soldiers landing on an alien world with plenty of swagger, only for that confidence to collapse the moment they see the scale of the Zerg swarm bearing down on them.

The tone is bloody, intense, and unfiltered, staying close to the grim military science-fiction atmosphere the original StarCraft titles were known for.

Release window

Despite the reveal, the game is a long way off. Blizzard is targeting a 2030 release at the earliest, so expect a lengthy wait before gameplay footage arrives and even longer before anyone gets hands-on time.

No firm launch date beyond the 2030 target has been confirmed.

Blizzard’s earlier StarCraft shooters

This is Blizzard’s third crack at a StarCraft shooter, and the first to actually make it to a public reveal. The two previous efforts were both scrapped during development.

ProjectTypeStatus

With StarCraft: Ghost built as a level-based third-person game and Ares never officially unveiled, the newly announced STARCRAFT represents the franchise’s first confirmed shooter to survive to a formal reveal. The series had been dormant on the release front since StarCraft Remastered in 2017, with StarCraft 2 in 2010 marking the last brand-new entry, so a fresh game moving forward is a notable turn for the franchise even with the distant launch target.
