Pawney is the Dark-element DPS that shows up in the Aniilog as No. 62A, armed with a broken sword and a set of battered armor. You cannot catch one in the wild, and no amount of exploring Idyll will turn one up. It only arrives at the end of a specific chain: a quest in the Russet Highlands that ends with a sword being pulled out of a stone, followed by an evolution you pay for in Night Stones.

Quick answer: Complete the Warrior Journey Quest in the Russet Highlands to pull out the Sword of Bravery, then evolve a level 45 Helmut using Night Stone ×3.

What you need before starting

Both halves of the process have hard requirements, and missing either one leaves you stuck at the evolution screen with a greyed-out button.

  • A Helmut, Pawney’s Lumin stage form, raised to level 45.
  • Night Stone ×3 for the evolution cost.
  • Access to the Russet Highlands, where the quest runs across roughly Lv. 44–51 territory.
  • A Water-type Aniimo on your team for the fight at the end of the quest.

There are two quests with similar names. The one that unlocks Pawney is the Warrior Journey Quest in the Russet Highlands, not the Warrior Quest over in Beast Fang Ridge.

Warrior Journey Quest: Where it starts and how it ends

Travel to the Rainbow Woods, in the Berylline Vale area of the Russet Highlands, and look for the NPC Sorora at coordinates -0678, 1607. She is standing at an easel, painting, and talking to her opens the quest.

Walk a few steps from Sorora to the pair of NPCs nearby, Big Chillmut and Little Chillmut, and speak to both. This is what actually moves the quest forward and puts the first tracking marker on your map.
Follow the checkpoints as they appear. Each one sends you to another Chillmut somewhere in the Russet Highlands, and each conversation advances the chain, so there is nothing to search for manually — just chase the yellow marker.
The trail eventually points at the circular, whirlpool-shaped area in the middle of the Russet Highlands. That is the final stop, and there is a boss waiting there.

Beat the boss. Water-type Aniimo are the best fit for this fight, so swap one in before you start rather than trying to muscle through with whatever you were levelling. Winning completes the quest and pulls out the Sword of Bravery.

Evolving Helmut into Pawney

Pulling the Sword of Bravery only removes the lock. The evolution itself is a separate action you perform on your Helmut, and it will not happen on its own.

Open your Aniimo list and select the Helmut you want to evolve. Confirm it is sitting at level 45 or higher before you go any further.
Open the evolution screen. With the quest done, the Pawney branch should now read as unlocked instead of showing the Sword of Bravery condition.
Spend three Night Stones to confirm. Helmut becomes Pawney at the Nova stage, keeping its Dark element and shifting into the DPS role.

A Snowfield Helmut follows the same path, with snowy weather as an extra condition, and produces the Snowfield Form of Pawney instead of the basic one.

How to confirm Pawney unlocked

There are two clean checks. Your Helmut’s entry should now display Pawney, with the Nova stage tag and the Pursuit trait attached, and the Aniilog should have No. 62A filled in rather than showing an empty slot between Mountain Woods Helmut and Snowfield Pawney.

If the evolution screen still lists “Pull out the Sword of Bravery” as an unmet condition, the quest has not registered as complete — head back and finish the boss fight at the whirlpool.

What Pawney can do once you have it

Pawney’s trait, Pursuit, adds 30% Damage Amp against targets that are in a Controlled or Break state, which is why it tends to be paired with a Break specialist rather than played solo. Its mobility skill is Hookshot, letting you fire an arm toward the center of your view and pull yourself to walls or enemies, with the option to hold the button to aim.

Ironclad Armament is the Ultimate. It drops Pawney’s mask and hardens its body, raising EP recovery by 10% and adding 30% extra damage against BREAK targets for 15 seconds. While that window is open, hitting the Ultimate again unleashes Dragon Slayer Strike, a heavy hit on everything in front of it.

Outside combat, Pawney is useful even when it is benched. Assign it to your Homeland and it will chop trees and haul resources and handcrafted goods around, which makes the Night Stones you spent feel a little less painful.
