Sound Breathing is one of the harder styles to simply stumble into. The trainer does not sit in a village or along a main road — he stands on a ledge above the water in the frozen half of the map, and the only way up is a swim and a wall climb. Getting there is most of the work.
Quick answer: Head into Iceveil Valley past the World Boss Tengai, drop into the water below the Sound Trainee ledge, then Wall Climb the cliff face to reach Sound Trainer Tengai on the upper ledge.
What you need before heading to Iceveil Valley
Two things will stop the trip cold if you skip them. The first is movement: the trainer’s ledge cannot be reached without the Wall Climb skill, and Double Jump makes the approach far less fiddly. Both come from your skill tree, so unlock them before you make the walk.
The second is the cold. Iceveil Valley chips away at you the moment the snow starts falling, and without a lantern you are relying entirely on campfires along the trail to reset the freezing effect. Plan the route around them rather than sprinting straight through.
The material side is the expensive part. Sound Breathing asks for Level 75, 13,000 Wen, and 150 Demon Horns. Demon Horns drop from demons in the dark cave and from the demons that spawn around town at night, so it is worth farming them in batches long before you make the climb.

If you have already unlocked Sound Cave as a destination, the Transportation Guy can fast travel you straight to its entrance, which skips the frozen walk entirely on repeat visits.
How to unlock Sound Breathing from the trainer
Talking to Tengai with the level, Wen, and Demon Horns in hand starts the training questline. Each task drops a marker on your map, and you return to the trainer after finishing one to pick up the next.
- Pull Boulder — head to Frozen Lake, interact with a boulder, and drag it to the marked spot.
- Pushups — go to Wop’s Training Grounds and use the red carpet to start the quick-time minigame.
- Split Boulder — return to Frozen Lake, equip your sword, and clear the quick-time prompts on a boulder.
- Target Training — back at Wop’s Training Grounds, use the target practice device and click every target that appears.
- Defeat Sound Trainee — fight and beat the trainee NPC near the trainer’s area.
The Sound Trainer will not interact with you if you already have a breathing style equipped. Reset your current style first, or the dialogue simply will not open.
You will know it worked the moment the Sound Trainee goes down. The style is granted on that kill rather than on a return trip to the trainer, and your blade turns Amber once Sound Breathing is equipped.
Sound Breathing moves and mastery unlocks
The kit leans on explosions and stuns rather than reach. Damage is high and the crowd control is reliable, but almost every move is short-ranged and several can be cancelled out of easily, so spacing matters more here than with most styles.
| Move | Key | Mastery |
|---|---|---|
| Bursting Bloom | Z | 1 |
| Roar | X | 26 |
| Resounding Slashes | C | 32 |
| Explosive Impact | V | 40 |
| Smoke Screen | B | 50 |
| String Performance | N | 60 |
Bursting Bloom is a forward dash into a flurry of invisible slashes, Roar slams both blades down for a knockback blast, and Resounding Slashes chains hits that each pop like a small firework. Explosive Impact throws out a projectile that pulls an enemy toward you, then detonates if the follow-up slash connects.
Smoke Screen is the odd one out. Pressing B drops a cloud that blocks vision and hides you inside it, and tapping the key a second time detonates the whole thing.

String Performance does not unlock on mastery alone. You also have to defeat Tengen, the world boss who spawns out in the open near the Sound Cave exit, and he sits at 3,500 health with Tier 5 chests and daily spins among his rewards.

Other breathing trainers and where they sit
Sound is a late pickup, so if you are still building toward Level 75 it helps to know which trainers you can reach in the meantime. Several sit along routes you will already be running.
| Style | Trainer location | Extra requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Serpent | Mountain above the bandit camp near spawn | Level 25, 20 Demon Horns, 5 Beast Cores |
| Insect | Roof of the main Butterfly Estate building | — |
| Flame | House past the red bridge from Mistfall | — |
| Thunder | Cliffs above the bear area | Wall Climb |
| Stone | Lower route near the bear area | Axe and Mace |
| Wind | Snowy ledges in Iceveil Valley | 50 Demon Horns |
| Water | Underwater passage near the island house | — |
Serpent Trainer Obari is the cheapest way to get a style online early. The climb starts on the mountain above the bandit camp, and the entry bar is low enough that most players clear it while still farming their first stack of horns.

Water Trainer Urokodaki is the other awkward one. The entrance is a water-filled hole hidden behind a bush near the small island house, and you swim through a submerged passage to reach him — stay moving, because you can drown if you linger underwater.

If the climb to Tengai keeps failing, the cause is almost always the same two things: no Wall Climb, or the cold burning you down before you reach the cliff. Sort both out, keep the campfire stop in the route, and the trip becomes a two-minute run you can repeat whenever you need to return for the training tasks.
