A boar pen is the first thing that turns a Valheim camp into a base. Once two boars are fed and happy, leather scraps and raw meat stop being something you hunt for and start piling up on their own. The taming itself is simple, but the timer is fragile, and most failed attempts come down to a scared boar rather than a wrong food.

Quick answer: Lure a boar into a sealed pen, drop three raspberries or other accepted food inside, then walk away and stay roughly within 64 meters. An uninterrupted tame takes 30 minutes.

What boars eat in Valheim 1.0

Boars only accept six foods and will walk past everything else on the ground. Raspberries are the easiest early option because Meadows bushes are everywhere.

  • Raspberries
  • Blueberries
  • Red mushrooms
  • Carrots
  • Turnips
  • Onions

You can drop a whole stack at once. A boar only takes one item from the stack at a time, eats every 10 seconds when it is hungry, and then stays fed for 10 minutes. A clean, uninterrupted tame needs only three pieces of food in total.

Yellow mushrooms do not count. Only the red ones work.

Build the pen before you find a boar

Build first, chase second. A tamed boar is hard to move any real distance, so the pen needs to sit where you actually want the farm. Roundpole fences are strong enough for boars, as long as nothing keeps spooking them into attacking the walls. Pick flat ground, make the enclosure taller than looks necessary, and leave a gate or a panel you can smash and rebuild.

Keep torches, campfires, and any other flame well clear of the area. Wild boars are frightened by fire, and a frightened boar will not eat. That one detail sinks more tames than anything else.

Give each animal room. Boars need to pathfind to the food on the ground, so a cramped pen full of bodies can leave one standing still and starving. If you are taming two at once, build two separate pens with space between them.

Trap and feed a boar

Head into the Meadows and find a wild boar. Walk into its line of sight so it charges you, and keep its attention. Boars have a predictable rhythm of lunging and backing off, which makes them easy to lead across terrain and even through water.

Run the boar into the pen and seal it in. If you did not pre-build an enclosure, you can stand still and throw Roundpole Fences up around the boar while it attacks you, boxing it in on the spot.

Grab food from a chest or your inventory and drop it inside the pen. Boars only reach food within about a meter, so toss it close to where the animal is standing rather than into a far corner.

Get out of the pen and put distance between you and the boar. The red exclamation mark above its head has to disappear before anything starts. A low wall or a slope you can duck behind works well, since a boar that cannot see you calms down faster.

Stay nearby and find something to do. Yellow hearts over the boar mean the timer is running. Top up the food if the stack empties, and keep other creatures away from the fence line.

The 30-minute timer and what pauses it

Taming ticks forward every three seconds, 600 times, which works out to 30 minutes of real time. Three conditions all have to hold for a tick to count. The boar must be fed, it must not be alerted, and a player has to be in the loaded area, roughly within 64 meters. If you can still see the boar from where you are standing, you are close enough.

StatusWhat it meansEffect on taming
AcclimatizingFed and calmTimer runs, percentage climbs
AlertSenses something nearbyStill able to eat
FrightenedRed exclamation markStops eating and taming
HungryNo reachable foodProgress halts until fed

Hover your crosshair over the boar to read its state and the tameness percentage, though getting that close often alerts it. Watching for the hearts from a distance is safer.

Sleeping does not help. It skips no part of the timer and burns through the food faster, so a night in bed can leave you with a hungry boar and lost progress. Wandering off to another part of the map has the same effect, because the zone unloads and nothing ticks.

A Brew of Animal Whispers cuts an uninterrupted tame from 30 minutes down to about 15.

How to confirm the boar is tamed

When the bar fills, an on-screen message tells you the boar has been tamed and its name tag switches over with a friendly health bar. Walk up to it and press E and you will get a burst of pink hearts and a line saying it loves you. Left Shift and E lets you rename it.

A tamed boar stops being hostile to you and to other friendly animals, and it no longer panics near torches or a campfire, so you can finally light the pen. It also joins your faction, which means normal weapons will not hurt it. To collect meat and leather scraps you need a butcher knife, or friendly fire turned on.

Boars that spawned at abandoned farms or near boar runestones keep their anchor to that spot even after taming, and will keep trying to walk home. Breed them where they are and move the piglets instead.

Two fed, unbothered boars in the same pen will eventually produce a piglet on their own, and the offspring inherit stars from whichever parent gives birth. That is the real payoff of the first 30 minutes. Tame one boar carefully, tame a second, and the pen handles the rest while you go do something more dangerous.
