Valheim: How to Get Wider Pockets and Deeper Pockets Inventory Upgrades

Two merchant purchases add 16 inventory slots, but each one is locked behind a specific boss kill.

Two merchant purchases add 16 inventory slots, but each one is locked behind a specific boss kill.

Valheim gives you a fixed grid of inventory slots for most of a playthrough, and hauling ore, food, and building materials around that limit is one of the game’s quiet frustrations. There are two permanent fixes, both sold by the merchant, and both gated behind boss kills rather than crafting. Together they add two full rows to your inventory and never need to be re-bought.

Quick answer: Kill Moder, then buy Wider Pockets from the merchant for 1,000 coins. Kill the Queen, then buy Deeper Pockets for 2,000 coins. That is 16 extra slots.

Wider Pockets and Deeper Pockets: cost, boss, and slots

UpgradeCostBoss requiredSlots added
Wider Pockets1,000 coinsModer (Mountain)8 (one row)
Deeper Pockets2,000 coinsThe Queen (Mistlands)8 (one row)

The full set costs 3,000 coins and grants 16 extra slots in total. The order is fixed by progression, so Wider Pockets always comes first. Neither purchase is consumed or lost on death — once bought, the rows stay on your character.

What has to be true before the merchant will sell them

Both upgrades sit permanently in Haldor’s stock list, but each one only becomes purchasable once the matching boss is dead. Everything you need lines up like this:

  • A merchant you have already located, since Haldor spawns in the Black Forest.
  • Moder, the Mountain boss, defeated — this unlocks Wider Pockets.
  • The Queen, the Mistlands boss, defeated — this unlocks Deeper Pockets.
  • 1,000 coins on hand for the first upgrade, 2,000 for the second.

Both bosses are considerably easier with other players, and the coin totals are reachable well before you ever reach the Mistlands, so the boss kill is usually the real bottleneck rather than the price.

How to buy the inventory upgrades

Take down Moder in the Mountain biome. This is the kill that makes the first inventory row available for purchase, so there is no way to buy in early.
Travel back to the merchant and open his store menu. Select Wider Pockets from the item list and hit Buy to spend 1,000 coins.

Push into the Mistlands and defeat the Queen. Only after that fight does the second row appear as a valid purchase.
Return to the merchant one more time and buy Deeper Pockets for 2,000 coins. This is the final inventory expansion, and there is nothing else to buy afterward for extra slots.

How to confirm the extra rows are active

Open your inventory after each purchase. A successful buy adds a visible row of eight empty slots at the bottom of the grid, and your coin total drops by the listed price. With both upgrades applied, you should be looking at two additional rows rather than one.

The practical difference shows up fastest on long trips. Sixteen extra slots means a full loadout of food, tools, and a spare weapon can sit alongside whatever you are actually out there to collect, so exploration runs end because you chose to head home rather than because the grid filled up.
