Flame is one of the strongest Cursed Fruits in Grand Blue, and pairing it with a sword gives you something most fruit-only players lack: a reliable melee opener that confirms into fire damage. The kit leans almost entirely on Strength, keeps Health high enough to survive a full enemy combo, and uses a short list of skills you slot into repeatable routes.
Quick answer: Run roughly 160 Health and 317 Strength, equip a Gilded Saber with Flame, and take Power Slash, Whirlwind Slash, Sword Lunge, Flame Fist, Flame Pillar, Bear Charge, and Usopp’s Hammer.
Stat distribution for the Flame sword build
Flame scales with a Strength-heavy setup, so nearly every point goes there. Agility stays at the minimum because the build gets its mobility from skills rather than stat investment.
| Stat | Sword variant | Claw variant |
|---|---|---|
| Health | 160 | 150 |
| Strength | 317 | 300 |
| Agility | 1 | Minimal |

In PvP, the number that matters more than the raw Health stat is your total HP pool. Aim for 1,300 to 1,400 HP minimum so a single clean combo cannot delete you outright. Extra stat points come from ranking up through Hermes tasks in the Contacts menu, so clear those as they appear instead of treating them as optional side work.

Add to Google Preferences →Weapon choice: Gilded Saber or Claws
The sword route uses a Gilded Saber, upgraded to level 9, alongside the Sailor’s Fang and a Small Hammer. It gives you Power Slash, Whirlwind Slash, and Sword Lunge, which all connect cleanly into Flame skills.
Claws are the alternative if you want a faster, more PvP-focused version of the same Flame core. Claw Flail replaces the sword arts as your damage confirm, and the stat spread barely changes.

For Fighting Styles, Trickster and Brawler are the two worth building toward. Trickster gives you mobility and combo setups, while Brawler is the cheaper melee layer to get running early.
Equipment, accessories, and gear upgrades
The armor set is straightforward. Bear Head and Bear Suit cover the outfit slots, and the accessory slots hold Sailor’s Fang or Richie’s Fang, a Marine Captain’s Cape, and a Flame Ring.

Gear upgrades are where most players lose value. Roll for the stats that keep you alive and let Strength handle the damage.
- Max HP on accessories, prioritized above everything else.
- PvP Damage Taken reduction, which directly counters burst combos.
- Seastone coating on your weapon, for fighting other fruit users.

Accessories that only add flat cosmetic value are a trap. If an upgrade does not increase Max HP, cut PvP damage taken, or add Seastone, it is not moving your build forward.
Skill tree setup and equipped skills
Your upgrade points go into the Logia Tree for the Flame skills and into your weapon tree for the sword arts. The seven skills below are the ones the build actually uses in combat.
| Skill | Source | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Sword Lunge | Sword | Gap closer, combo opener |
| Power Slash | Sword | Damage confirm |
| Whirlwind Slash | Sword | Downslam extension |
| Flame Fist | Flame | Mid-combo burst |
| Flame Pillar | Flame | Area pressure, launcher |
| Bear Charge | Style | Rush and knockdown |
| Usopp’s Hammer | Style | Stun into follow-up |

If you go the claw route instead, swap the sword arts for Claw Flail and add Fatal Opening and Nine Lives. Nine Lives is a parry, and landing one opens a counter window you can immediately convert into burst damage.
The downslam: the core sword mechanic
Everything in the sword version of this build routes through the downslam. Learn it on an NPC before taking it into a real fight.
Flame sword combo routes
Standard opener
Open with Sword Lunge to close the gap, then Usopp’s Hammer to lock your target in place. From there, Flame Fist carries the damage and your normal attacks close the string out. This is the route that works in most neutral situations.
Flame Pillar route
Start with either Bear Charge or Usopp’s Hammer, then drop Flame Pillar and finish with ground attacks while the target is still caught in it. Bear Charge covers more distance, Usopp’s Hammer is the safer pick when you are already in range.
Full PvP combo
The longest reliable string runs M1s into Usopp’s Hammer, Bear Charge, Flame Pillar, and a finisher. On the claw version that finisher is Claw Flail; on the sword version it is Power Slash or Whirlwind Slash out of a downslam.
Anti-Logia route
Bear Charge is unreliable against other Flame and Logia users. Against those matchups, drop it and run the shorter string of Usopp’s Hammer into Flame Pillar into your finisher. It does less total damage but it lands far more consistently.

Checking the build works in PvE
Test your damage on Black Noir Pirates in Maple Village. Run plain M1s first to read your base physical numbers, then run a full combo and compare. If your Strength investment is landing correctly, the combo total should dwarf the M1 chain by a wide margin.
The same setup handles island camps and quest content without changes. Flame is a top-tier fruit for questing, and the sword layer covers the gaps where fruit cooldowns leave you exposed. Grand Blue is still in Early Access after launching publicly on August 28, 2026, so expect skills and gear values to shift between patches, and re-check your upgrade priorities after a balance pass.
