Digging a body back out of a grave in Graveyard Keeper 2 is gated behind a single purchasable item. Walk up to a filled plot, press the exhume option, and the game stops you with a requirement window instead of starting the dig. The fix is a short trip to the Village, not a tech tree unlock.
Quick answer: Buy an Exhumation Certificate from the Tavernkeeper in the Village tavern for 1 silver 75 copper, return to the grave, and the Exhume Body option will run.
Why the Exhume Body option is blocked
Interacting with an occupied grave in the Graveyard gives you an Exhume body button. Pressing it opens a requirement prompt reading Exhume Body: To exhume a body, you need to have: Exhumation Certificate (0/1). That counter is the entire blocker. You are not missing a skill, a shovel upgrade, or a quest step.
One certificate covers one grave. If you plan to clear several bad burials in the same session, buy several copies before heading back to the yard.

Running the exhumation at the grave
You know it worked when the certificate count drops in your inventory, the grave no longer holds a body, and the plot is free to be refilled or rebuilt.
A grave’s decorations are tied to its plot, not its corpse. To rearrange the yard instead of only replacing a body, use the yard table to take apart the gravestone and fence, then dig the plot again in the desired location.
When exhuming is worth 1 silver 75 copper
Exhumation exists to pull bodies carrying unwanted red skulls out of the ground. Every red skull on a buried corpse drags that plot’s score down, and the graveyard total feeds your weekly Church sermon Faith yield and the Bishop’s approval in the Town.
A single grave scores as min(Decor Score, Corpse White Skulls) - Red Skulls. The white skull count on the body is a hard ceiling, so an expensive marble fence on a two-white-skull corpse still only returns +2. That ceiling is the second reason to exhume: once advanced embalming is unlocked, swapping an early low-skull body for a better one raises the plot without touching the decor.
- Pull a body when its red skulls are pushing a decorated plot into negative territory.
- Pull a body when you have a higher white-skull corpse ready to take the same plot.
- Leave a body alone when the plot already scores positive, since every exhumation costs another certificate.
What to do with the exhumed corpse
An exhumed body behaves like any other corpse on the property once it is out of the ground, so decide its destination before you start digging.
| Option | Best for |
|---|---|
| Rebury in a better plot | Bodies with a high white skull count |
| Cremation pyre | Bodies that only ever cost you rating |
| Zombie resurrection | Corrupted bodies destined for labor or combat |
| River dumping | Fast removal when no pyre is unlocked |
Because corruption improves zombie workers and soldiers, a red-skull body you dig up is not automatically waste. Sort as you go, keep the presentable corpses for display graves, and route the rest toward the resurrection line rather than paying for another certificate later.
