The Overworld had settled into calm once its heroes put down the earlier threats. That stability did not hold. Deep underground, three Illagers stumbled onto a portal that opened into the Sift, a dimension flooded with souls and raw power.
Rather than treat the find as a discovery to protect, the trio saw a chance to seize control and force the Overworld to bow. The greed of the Illagers is what pulls the world back into conflict.
What the Sift is
The Sift is not simply a new location where souls sit trapped. Its power is shared with the life forms that already exist inside it, giving the dimension an intrinsic life force. That distinction matters, because the Illager High Council refuses to work alongside the creatures of the Sift. Instead, they take the energy for themselves and turn it into a weapon.
