World of Warcraft: The Chill of Death Full Quest Guide

The Chill of Death is a short Horde quest in Tirisfal Glades that asks you to help Gretchen Dedmar stitch together a blanket before the Plague of Undeath takes her mind. It sits between Forsaken Duties and Return to the Magistrate in the early Brill questline, and the only real work is killing bats.

Quick answer: Take The Chill of Death from Gretchen Dedmar in Tirisfal Glades, kill Greater Duskbats on the hills south and east of Brill until you have five Duskbat Pelts, then hand them back to her.

The quest is sharable, so anyone in your group who is on the same chain can pick it up from you instead of running back to Brill. Completing it pays out 100 XP, +250 reputation with Undercity, 55 copper, and one armor piece of your choice.

Where to find Gretchen Dedmar and accept the quest

Gretchen Dedmar sits at the Death’s Watch Waystation under the tent, just outside Brill in Tirisfal Glades. In World of Warcraft Classic she is instead found upstairs in the Gallows’ End Tavern in the middle of Brill. Either way, she is the same NPC who both gives and completes the quest, so you will be returning to the exact spot you started from.

Accept Forsaken Duties first if the quest is not showing up. The Chill of Death only appears once that step of the Brill chain is done.

Buying Coarse Thread in Brill (Classic only)

In Classic, the turn-in also needs one Coarse Thread alongside the pelts. It is not a drop and no bat will ever give it to you. Abigail Shiel, the Trade Supplies vendor working from a cart out in the open in Brill, sells it for 10 copper.

Buy it before you head out so you do not have to ride back into town after the fifth pelt. The modern version of the quest dropped this requirement entirely, so if your objective tracker only lists Duskbat Pelts, skip the vendor.

Farming five Duskbat Pelts from Greater Duskbats

Leave Brill and head south past the cemetery, or east along the road into the open fields. The hill around the zeppelin tower south of town holds the densest cluster of bats in the zone.

Look for Greater Duskbats, the level 7 flyers drifting low over the grass and hillsides. They roam rather than sit still, so pull them one at a time and let strays come to you instead of chasing into a second bat.

Kill the bat and loot the corpse. Duskbat Pelts are not a guaranteed drop, so expect to clear more than five bats before the counter fills. Ranged attacks work well here since the bats close the distance on their own.

Watch the objective tracker climb toward 5/5. If the bats in your immediate area thin out, circle the hill or move further along the roadside rather than waiting for respawns.

Turning in The Chill of Death and picking a reward

Run back to Gretchen Dedmar and hand everything over. You choose one of four armor pieces, so take the one that matches your class’s armor type rather than the highest item level on the list.

Duskbat Mail Leggings were added to the reward list in Patch 7.0.3, so older accounts that remember only three options are not misremembering.

How to confirm the quest completed

Gretchen closes with a line about Sylvanas recognizing your bravery one day, the reward window appears, and the quest drops off your tracker. You should see the XP, the copper, and the Undercity reputation gain in your chat log at the same time.

If you are on a modern character and want to double-check later, run /run print(C_QuestLog.IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(375)) in chat. Once the turn-in registers, Return to the Magistrate becomes available and the Brill chain carries on from there.
