World of Warcraft: How to Leave the Undercity

Take the Trade Quarter bat handler, or ride the central ring elevators up into the Ruins of Lordaeron.

Take the Trade Quarter bat handler, or ride the central ring elevators up into the Ruins of Lordaeron.

The Undercity is a ring-shaped maze built under the ruins of Lordaeron, and its layout is famous for swallowing new Forsaken characters for twenty minutes at a time. The exits are not hidden, though. There are only two of them worth using, and one is a straight run from the Trade Quarter.

Quick answer: Head to the central ring, take one of the east or west elevator hallways up into the Ruins of Lordaeron, then run straight out the front gate into Tirisfal Glades.

The flight path is the faster option, but only if you already have a destination unlocked. A brand new character with no flight points will have to walk. The elevators work at any level, cost nothing, and put you on the doorstep of Tirisfal Glades.

Flying out with the Trade Quarter bat handler

The bat handler is Michael Garrett, and he stands in the Trade Quarter along with the vendors and the auction house crowd. Talk to him, pick the flight option, and choose any destination on the map you have already discovered. The bats carry you out of the city and over Tirisfal Glades without you ever touching the elevators.

If the flight map opens with nothing selectable, you have not unlocked any other flight points yet. Use the elevators instead and pick up the flight masters as you travel.

Walking out through the elevators

Everything in the Undercity loops back on itself, which is why running the outer ring in circles never gets you anywhere. The elevator hallways branch outward from the central ring, and they show up on your map on the eastern and western sides. Pick whichever one is closer.

From the Trade Quarter, run toward the middle of the city until you reach the central ring with the bank and the throne area. This is your reference point for everything that follows.

Open your map and look for the corridors that break away from the ring on the east and west sides. Head down one of those hallways. They are wide, sparsely decorated, and usually patrolled by an abomination guard.
At the end of the hallway you will find a large door that opens and closes on a cycle. Wait for it to open, step into the elevator, and ride it up. The trip takes a few seconds.

Step out into the Ruins of Lordaeron and follow the hallway straight ahead. Ignore the side passages. The route runs directly into the main courtyard.

How to confirm you actually got out

You have left when the zone name reads Tirisfal Glades instead of Undercity or Ruins of Lordaeron. The visual cue is just as obvious. The green fog and stone corridors give way to open ground, and the bridge behind you is the last piece of the ruins you will see.

Once you are in Tirisfal Glades, grab the nearby flight point. From then on you can use the bat handler in the Trade Quarter and skip the elevator walk entirely.

There is also a longer path north of the Royal Apothecary that eventually leads outside, but it drops you well away from where you want to be and takes considerably longer. Unless you are exploring for the sake of it, the elevators are the route worth memorizing.
