Wolves are the only tamed creature in Valheim you can actually command, and a bred pack turns into free pelts, fangs, meat, and a bodyguard that fights anything that walks up to your base. Getting there means surviving a Mountain trip, penning an animal that hits for 70 slash damage, and then doing nothing for half an hour while a hidden meter fills.

Quick answer: Lure a wolf into a stakewall pen, drop raw meat inside, and get out of its line of sight. Taming takes 30 minutes, or 15 with a Brew of Animal Whispers.

What to pack before a wolf taming trip

Wolves are carnivores, so berries and vegetables do nothing here. Any of the raw meats below works, and a wolf only eats one item from a stack at a time. Carrying 5 to 20 pieces of raw meat gives you plenty of slack if the process stalls and you have to re-feed.

  • Boar meat
  • Deer meat
  • Lox meat
  • Neck tails
  • Raw fish
  • Chicken meat
  • Sausages

The second half of the kit is cold protection. The Mountain applies a freezing effect that drains you constantly, so bring a Wolf Fur Cape or a Frost Resistance Mead before you set foot on snow. You will also need building materials for the pen itself, plus a hammer.

Brew of Animal Whispers: Cut wolf taming from 30 minutes to 15

Taming always runs on a fixed timer, and the only thing that changes it is the Brew of Animal Whispers. Drinking one halves the taming time from 30 minutes to 15, assuming nothing interrupts the process. It is worth brewing before the trip rather than after you already have a wolf sitting in a pen.

The mead base is made at a Mead Ketill and pulls ingredients from three different biomes. Rolled Pebbles come from the Bog Witch trader in the Swamp, Carrots grow from the Black Forest, and Onions come out of the Mountain.

Sleeping does not speed anything up. The taming timer ignores sleep entirely, and food spoils faster while you sleep, so you can wake up to a hungry wolf and a frozen meter.

Build the pen and trap a wolf

Wolves spawn in the high, snowy interior of the Mountain. Pick a spot on the edge of the biome, close enough that wolves will chase you all the way there, and build before you go hunting.

Build the enclosure. Stakewalls ring the pen, and a raised Wood Floor 2×2 platform inside gives you somewhere to stand where a wolf cannot bite you. Leave one gap as the entrance. For starred wolves, terrain works better than wood, since an angry starred wolf chews through weak build pieces fast.
Find your wolf. Run the peaks until one notices you, take a swing or two so it locks onto you, then start heading back downhill. Keep your distance, because three quick bites in a row can end the run.

Lead it inside. Run through the gap, hop up onto the raised platform, and seal the entrance behind the wolf. Two wolves in one pen is fine, and saves you a second trip when you get to breeding.
Drop the meat and disappear. Throw the raw meat down inside the pen, then sneak off into the trees far enough that the wolf loses interest in you. A wolf that can see you stays alert, and an alert wolf makes no progress.

Watch from a ridge and drink the brew. Find a spot that keeps the pen loaded but out of the wolf’s line of sight, and drink your Brew of Animal Whispers now so the whole timer runs at the faster rate.

Taming rules that keep the meter moving

Under the hood, taming ticks every three seconds and needs 600 successful ticks to finish. A tick only counts when the wolf is fed, is not alerted with a red exclamation mark, and a player is within roughly 64 meters keeping the area loaded. Fail any of those and the meter simply pauses.

Eating is checked every ten seconds, and the wolf has to be able to path to the nearest food item within 10 meters. Cramming several animals onto a tiny platform is the usual reason food goes untouched. One meal keeps a wolf fed for ten minutes, which is why an uninterrupted tame only burns about three items.

Full tame, no brew30 minutes
Full tame with Brew of Animal Whispers15 minutes
One food item keeps a wolf fed10 minutes
Minimum pregnancy before a cub can appear1 minute

Yellow hearts floating above the wolf mean it is eating and the tame is progressing. You can also hover your crosshair over it to read the acclimatizing percentage, though getting that close often alerts the animal and costs you more time than the number is worth.

Starred wolves only spawn at night and try to despawn at dawn. Start the tame during the night, because the first successful taming tick strips the despawn flag and lets the wolf eat during the day.

How to confirm the wolf is tamed

A banner reading “Wolf has been tamed” appears on screen the moment the meter fills. After that you can walk into the pen safely, press E to pet it and see a burst of pink hearts, and hold Shift and press E to give it a name.

Interacting also toggles its orders. You will see “Wolf follows you” when it is trailing you, and telling it to stay leaves it guarding an area. Follow state can drop off on its own, so re-issue the command occasionally on long walks. Wolves will not follow you through portals, so they have to walk or ride a boat home.

Tamed wolves attack anything hostile nearby, including penned animals you are still taming. Keep wolf pens well away from boar pens.

How to breed wolves and raise cubs

Breeding is just taming’s feeding rules applied to animals you already own. Keep two tamed wolves fed and happy in the same enclosure and they will pair off on their own, throwing hearts until a cub appears.

  • Two tamed wolves within 3 meters of each other
  • Both fed and in the happy state, with no red alert
  • No more than 4 wolves within 10 meters
  • A player nearby so the area stays loaded
  • Any raw meat except wolf meat, seeker meat, or bear meat

Pregnancy must run for at least one minute, and the birth afterward happens at random. A cub takes 50 minutes to reach adulthood. Since cubs do not flee, breeders generally keep them and release the parents.

Stars carry over, and that is the real payoff. A tamed 2-star wolf passes its star level to its offspring, and a 2-star wolf has 240 health and hits for 140 slash damage compared to 80 health and 70 damage on a plain one. If breeding suddenly stalls, check food first, then count how many wolves are packed into that 10-meter radius. Starvation never un-tames an animal, it just stops it reproducing.
