Control Resonant: How to Complete Locate the Research Team (Underpass)

Why the Underpass objective stalls at a wide gap, and the exact Fault order that reopens the route.

Why the Underpass objective stalls at a wide gap, and the exact Fault order that reopens the route.

“Locate the Research Team” is the stretch of Recursions and Iterations that sends Dylan down beneath the Sinkhole and into the Underpass, and it is the point where most players assume they have missed a ledge. They have not. The objective is designed to run out of road, and the fix lives in a completely different district.

Quick answer: The wide gap in Underpass 3 is a soft block. Fast travel from The Spire to Evacuation Zone: Main Street, finish The Subway Fault to unlock Reach, then return to the Underpass and complete the Underpass Fault.

Where “Locate the Research Team” stops being possible

The objective starts after you meet Pope in the Oldest House lobby and drop below the Sinkhole. Zoe keeps telling you to head further down, and the route is pure platforming across floating concrete slabs and red-topped blocks hanging in the void, with Hiss patrolling the ledges between them.

Roughly halfway down you reach a red terrace with research equipment on it and a fast travel door labelled The Spire. Activate it. That door is the only convenient way back in later, and skipping it turns the return trip into a long re-run of the same platforming.

Past that, you climb through into Underpass 3 and arrive at an open drop facing a visual distortion on the far side of a wide chasm. There is no jump, no hidden staircase and no wall route. Once you look at it, Zoe talks and the objective rewrites itself to Find a Fault in the Evacuation Zone. The beacon and the nearby island of orange pipes are both real destinations, just not yet.

The Underpass Fault marker on the island of orange pipes appears around the same time, and it is also soft-blocked. It needs Reach, which you do not have yet, so do not spend time trying to force it.

What you need before the route reopens

  • Shift, earned from The Incursion Fault in the West Incursion Zone parking garage.
  • Access to the Evacuation Zone, opened during Evacuation Procedures.
  • The Spire fast travel door switched on, for the return trip.
  • Reach, the pull-toward-traversal-point ability from The Subway Fault.

Reach is the actual key. Without it the Underpass Fault will not open, and without that Fault the research team objectives never resume.

Clear The Subway Fault in the Evacuation Zone

Open the map at the gap and confirm the fast travel door position, then head back to the nearest active door. Your Quest Log will show Recursions and Iterations holding at the Evacuation Zone instruction, which is the sign you are on the right track rather than lost.

Use the door and select Evacuation Zone: Main Street from the travel menu. You arrive at the Evacuation Zone 5 rooftop checkpoint, where The Board delivers a short, deliberately unhelpful speech. That dialogue is the trigger that adds The Subway Fault to your Quest Log with the objective to investigate the subway.
Drop off the roof and follow the street-level roads through the green fog toward the lit subway entrance stairs. Head down through the stairwells, past the graffiti-covered corridors and turnstiles, and onto the train platform.

Jump down to the tracks and run the tunnels past the abandoned train cars. The back half of the route is mold-covered and defended by Bloomed Spore Mothers and Mold Blight, so clear them before you try to push through the narrow sections.
Follow the glowing rails and Jesse’s voice until you reach an ascending golden ramp and the objective changes to Enter the Fault. Inside, cross the golden-grass dreamscape, talk to Jesse and help her complete the ritual. That awards Reach.

Return to the Underpass and finish the Underpass Fault

Fast travel straight back to The Spire. Approaching the Fault from that door is far shorter than re-entering below the Sinkhole and platforming down again.
Use Reach to cross to the island of orange pipes and investigate the vision of Jesse there. The Fault entrance now accepts you instead of stalling.
Go inside to locate Jesse, then lead the children formed by projected light, bring young Dylan together with Jesse, and finish the ritual. This Fault provides no additional traversal ability, and Notes: Jesse Sightings is completed when the task ends.

The objectives that follow once the search resumes

Back at the area near The Spire fast travel spot, Recursions and Iterations picks up where it left off and runs a long chain of objectives to the end of the mission.

#Objective
1Explore the beacon location
2Locate the research team
3Keep searching for the team
4Track the time fluctuations
5Restore the power
6Locate Grist
7Locate the transmission tower
8Defend the transmission tower
9Use the cable car to reach the time fluctuation.
10Cross the chasm
11Follow the relays to Grist
12Place the final probe relay

Defending the transmission tower is the hardest single fight in the sequence, so it is worth spending Talent Points and picking up Health and Power Upgrade Points before you commit to it.

How to confirm you have broken the block

There are three clean confirmations, in order. The objective text swapping from the research team to Find a Fault in the Evacuation Zone tells you the gap is intentional. Reach appearing in your abilities after the subway ritual tells you the Underpass Fault is now enterable. And the Quest Log returning to “Explore the beacon location” under Recursions and Iterations tells you the main mission is moving again.

Placing the final probe relay closes out the mission and hands the story over to The House in Distress, which starts with Zoe at Executive Research in the Oldest House. The Underpass itself stays worth revisiting afterwards, since The Spire also leads to the Astral Plane route and The Physicist later on.
