Waylaid Crates are back in the World of Warcraft Forever beta, carried over from Season of Discovery. Each crate is a partly-missing shipment you complete by dropping in one bundle of profession materials, then hand to your faction’s supply depot. In return you earn Merchant’s Favor, a currency that buys profession recipes, including Bind on Pickup gear that can make leveling noticeably smoother.
Quick answer: Use the crate to reveal its label, fill it with any one bundle it lists, then turn it in at your faction depot for 5 Merchant’s Favor per crate.
Requirements before you fill a Waylaid Crate
Every Waylaid Crate can be used at level 10, while each later tier demands a higher level. The first crate describes a long-awaited delivery that failed to reach its destination, with some supplies gone. Reading its label changes it into a particular shipment—for example, Waylaid Crate: Apprentice Ingots.
Tiers scale with character level, so keep the level minimum in mind before you start farming materials.

- Expert crates: level 20+
- Artisan crates: level 35+
Gathering crates (Herbs, Ore, Textiles and Curiosities) take raw materials only and need no profession, so anyone can fill them. Crafting crates (Fabrics, Ingots, Parts) want processed goods, which usually means matching the right profession: Tailoring or Leatherworking for Fabrics, Mining smelting for Ingots, and Engineering for Parts. Textiles crates are the easy exception, since cloth drops from humanoids for every class.
How to fill and turn in a crate
The Crossroads sits on the usual Horde route through the Barrens, so keep sealed crates in your bags and hand them in as you pass rather than making a special trip.

A successful turn-in finishes the quest and adds 5 Merchant’s Favor to your currency total. The three-rank Legacy perk Performance Bonus also gives a 15% chance for a crate hand-in to award 100% more Merchant’s Favor through the Azeroth Commerce Authority, or, alternatively, Durotar Supply and Logistics.
Easiest bundle for each Apprentice crate
Because any single bundle fills a crate, the fastest route is picking the cheapest option. For the seven level 10 Apprentice crates, these are the lowest-effort fills. Gathering crates take raw materials; crafting crates need the matching profession.

Higher tiers follow the same pattern with pricier materials. Journeyman crafting favors Bolt of Woolen Cloth, Silver Bar and Bronze Tube; Expert leans on Steel Bar, Iron Strut and Cured Heavy Hide; Artisan crates open at level 35. There are 30 crate shipments in total across the four tiers.
What Merchant’s Favor unlocks
Depot vendors stock recipes covering every profession, with crafted equipment making up most of the rewards. Their best early option is level 20 Rare (blue) headgear: each piece costs 30 Merchant’s Favor, and Tailors, Leatherworkers and Blacksmiths have more than 15 helmets available between them. Since the gear is Bind on Pickup, only a character with the relevant profession can equip its creations.
Beyond helmets, the vendor list stretches further up the level range. Blue crafted gear reaches around level 50 for Tailoring and level 58 for Blacksmithing, and Enchanting can make level 20 totems, librams and idols. Alchemy gains new recipes such as Spellblasting Potion (+14 spell damage), Frenzy Potion (+14 attack power) and Lesser Mageblood Elixir (+6 mana per 5 sec), climbing to Elixir of the Owl and Elixir of the Whale. A mount is also on offer.
Because the strongest rewards are armor recipes, testers point out that taking the crafting profession for your armor type pays off while leveling: Blacksmithing for plate, Leatherworking for leather and mail, and Tailoring for cloth.
Where Waylaid Crates come from
The primary source is a world drop. Enemies across the low-level zones have a small chance to drop a crate, so the category you get is down to luck rather than choice. Textiles crates, for example, drop from a wide spread of humanoids and beasts in zones like Tirisfal Glades, Teldrassil, Elwynn Forest, Westfall, Durotar, Mulgore and the Barrens.
If you want a specific crate for a profession you are leveling, the Auction House is the other route. Search “crate” to see what is listed and grab one that fits your build at a price you are comfortable with.
Known bugs that stop a crate from completing
Two beta issues can block a fill even when you have the right materials.
Crates do not accept items whose maximum stack size is smaller than the quantity required. Apprentice Textiles asks for 40 Linen Cloth, but Linen Cloth only stacks to 20, so clicking a stack of 20 will not complete it. The workaround right now is to use the Light Leather option instead. Blizzard has flagged this as fixed in the next beta build.
Apprentice Curiosities rejects Greater Magic Essence but mistakenly permits Lesser Magic Essence as the selected target; attempting that order produces an error requiring 9999 to complete it. The next beta build lists this as fixed, so an essences refusal from a Curiosities crate comes from that bug, not from an error on your part.
With those quirks in mind, the loop is simple: loot a crate, read its label, drop in the cheapest bundle you can source, and hand it to your faction depot. The Merchant’s Favor adds up quickly, and the level 20 Rare crafted gear alone makes keeping a crafting profession worthwhile through the leveling stretch.
