Lazy Peons is a short Horde starting quest in the Valley of Trials, the orc and troll opening zone in Durotar. Foreman Thazz’ril hands you a Foreman’s Blackjack and asks you to smack the peons who keep dozing off instead of chopping wood. The only real trick is timing your hit while a peon is actually asleep.
Quick answer: Take the Foreman’s Blackjack from Foreman Thazz’ril, find a Lazy Peon sleeping on the ground, target it, and right-click the blackjack. Repeat until the counter is full, then return the blackjack.
What you need before starting
Everything for this quest happens inside the Valley of Trials, so there is no travel involved. You only need two things.
- The quest itself, picked up from Foreman Thazz’ril, who also acts as the turn-in.
- The Foreman’s Blackjack, a quest item he gives you when you accept.
Drag the Foreman’s Blackjack onto your action bar. You can then press its hotkey to use it instead of digging through your bags each time, which makes the whole quest much faster.
How to wake a Lazy Peon
The blackjack only counts when a peon is sleeping on the ground. Peons run through a cycle: they chop a tree, carry wood to the pile, cut more, then lie down for a nap. Each loop takes a minute or two, so if you catch one working, just wait beside it until it drops off.
Hitting a peon that is awake and working does nothing toward the objective. It will only bark a line at you, so save the blackjack for peons that are lying down.
Where to find Lazy Peons in the Valley of Trials
Lazy Peons cluster around the large trees they are meant to be cutting, spread across the valley both north and south of the Den. There is even one right behind Foreman Thazz’ril to get you started. Move from tree to tree and you will always find more. Because the quest is shared by many new players, peons respawn quickly.

How many peons you need to wake
The required count depends on the version you are playing. In Classic, the objective reads Peons Awoken (5), so you wake five sleeping peons. On modern retail, the objective is trimmed to four peons. Either way, keep hitting sleeping peons until the tracker fills.

Completing the quest also grants reputation with Orgrimmar and, for troll characters, the Darkspear Trolls.
Turn in the quest and confirm completion
Once the tracker shows the full count, head back to Foreman Thazz’ril and return the Foreman’s Blackjack to hand in the quest. He thanks you for keeping the peons in line, and the blackjack leaves your bags. You will know it worked when the quest clears from your log and the experience and reputation land.
In Classic, finishing Lazy Peons opens the follow-up quest Thazz’ril’s Pick from the same foreman, so you can carry straight on with the Valley of Trials chain.
