The 30th-anniversary flight combat sequel pairs a first-person FCU campaign with the series’ largest online mode across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

The eighth mainline flight combat entry from Bandai Namco Aces drops you into the cockpit over the fictional world of Strangereal, where a fallen nation is fighting to take back its skies. It ships with two very different experiences: a story-driven single-player campaign and a large multiplayer suite called Ace Combat Online.

Quick answer: Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve launches October 2, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, with a first-person campaign and a separate online mode built for up to 100 players in a shared base.

Release date, platforms, and early access

Built with Unreal Engine 5, the game launches simultaneously on Steam for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. Both solo play and multiplayer are available.

Purchases of the Deluxe Edition, Joker Flight Pack, or Premium Joker Flight Pack include access three days early. This window begins September 29, 2026, before the October 2 full launch. Early access applies to the digital editions.

The official Ace Combat 8 page lets you place an order for any edition. Pre-orders made by October 2 include the playable F-14A and a modern port of the 2006 game Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War.

The campaign: FCU against the Republic of Sotoa

Set a decade after the Lighthouse War, the story follows the 2029 Sotoa-Usea War. In July 2029, Sotoa’s Republic begins a rapid assault on the Federation of Central Usea, deploying Tonitrus Spears, orbital weapons designed for kinetic bombardment. The strike takes most of the country and destroys its navy.

You play a silent protagonist, the weapon systems officer flying with naval aviator Jan “Rex” Cope. Cope’s record as the “Wings of Theve” is exaggerated online as wartime propaganda to keep morale alive. After he is killed, you are ordered to carry the name yourself and lead the squadron. For the first time in the series, story scenes play out from a first-person perspective.

Between missions, you return to the aging aircraft carrier Endurance, which its crew calls the “Old Lady.” Refugees fill its decks, and the carrier is the Federation’s last operational base. It also serves as the place to build bonds with your squadron.

Joker Flight, your wingmen

Joker Flight is your small squadron, made up of named pilots with individual backstories. You can strengthen your rapport with them between sorties. Your decisions and performance in combat influence who makes it through and how some scenes unfold, while the broad plot remains unchanged.

Combat, squad commands, and the Aircraft Tree

The launch roster contains over 30 aircraft, arranged into four categories with distinct strengths. Choose an aircraft and loadout before each sortie, then tackle dogfights, ground-support missions, and air-to-sea attacks. Unlike previous entries, hits anywhere on an enemy plane deal damage, so you don’t have to target weak points; a wrecked aircraft can also harm nearby targets.

As the squadron’s leader, you can direct wingmen during combat: concentrate fire on one target, spread out to divide and conquer, guard your six, or launch special weapons. Each pre-launch briefing lays out routes and objectives. The new Cloudly weather system creates responsive skies, where contrails and engine smoke help reveal enemy positions.

The returning Aircraft Tree handles upgrades. Military Result Points (MRP) unlock airframes such as the Mirage 2000-5, improve air-to-air and ground payloads, provide bomb-angle upgrades, and let you equip specialized pylons for weapons including the 6AAM and QAAM.

Sotoa’s elite forces include the Lux Lunae 55th Unit of the 1st Special Operations Wing, 11th Tactical Squadron. Its forces also deploy massive land battleships and superweapons fitted with railguns.

Ace Combat Online: modes and progression

Ace Combat Online is multiplayer only, with save data and progression kept independent of the campaign. Its Air Base hub accommodates up to 100 players at once. Move around as a custom pilot avatar and accept mercenary contracts. The aircraft selection matches the campaign roster, but online rewards are required to earn planes.

ModePlayersSetup
Co-Op AssaultTwo teams of 4Teams hit enemy targets and compete for the highest score
Co-Op WarfareTwo teams of 4Team vs team with hostile land, sea, and air NPCs as a third party
Scramble4A team takes on a powerful rival NPC force
Emergency SortieUp to 8Co-op raid against series superweapons like the Chandelier and Arsenal Bird

The main modes are Co-Op Assault and Co-Op Warfare. While playing either, you may encounter the time-limited special missions Scramble and Emergency Sortie. In Co-Op Warfare, scoring without getting shot down builds a star-based Threat Level. Earn a 3-Star Threat Level to receive the “Ace” title; higher Threat Levels also award more points to the player who shoots you down.

Aircraft leveling raises gun and missile capacity, while supply drops award skins, callsign emblems, gestures, and flight jackets. You can adjust your avatar’s skin tone, face, hair, eye black, and flight suit, form squads with other pilots, and use hub features such as a jukebox that plays tracks from earlier series entries. Limited-time PvP events include 4v4 Team Deathmatch and 8-player Free-for-All Deathmatch.

Editions and pre-order bonuses

The selection consists of four editions, beginning with the base game and ending with a collector’s box containing physical items. Each edition comes with the same digital pre-order bonus.

Redeem the voucher in Season 1 and you also receive the ADFX-02 Morgan–PIXY, which becomes available in the campaign once every mission is finished.

The game has no paid loot boxes or randomized paid rewards. You can review everything available before making a purchase.

Between a carrier-based first-person story, the returning Aircraft Tree, and an online mode built for a shared base of up to 100 pilots, Wings of Theve leans on series traditions while pushing its multiplayer wider than ever. It flies onto PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC together on October 2, 2026.
