The Subway Fault sends Dylan Faden into the flooded, mold-choked tunnels beneath the Evacuation Zone to find Jesse and claim Reach, the grapple-style movement power that pulls you toward the glowing gravity bubbles scattered across Manhattan. It is a Search for Jesse mission, but it is not optional for long. Two later missions, Recursions and Iterations and The Underpass Fault, are blocked until you own Reach.

Quick answer: Head to Railyard Street Station in the north of the Evacuation Zone, push through the mold tunnels to the CRT TV, then talk to Jesse inside the golden Fault. Finishing her ritual unlocks Reach.

What you need before The Subway Fault

Unlock Shift first. The subway route uses altered-gravity surfaces that only Shift can walk, so the Incursion Fault in the West Incursion Zone has to be done before this one. Elevate, from the opening Orientation Fault, is also used to control one long fall inside the tunnels.

  • Shift, from the Incursion Fault, to cross Patterned tracks and reach side tunnels.
  • Elevate, from the Orientation Fault, to steer your descent onto a tunnel ledge.
  • Enough combat strength for level 4 Mold enemies along the way.

Dylan only gets the Subway Fault in his Quest Log after coming close enough to see Jesse. That means the Evacuation Zone may seem to have no Jesse content during an initial visit. If you leave it unfinished, the game adds it automatically when you later try to advance The Underpass Fault.

How to start The Subway Fault in the Evacuation Zone

Fast travel to the Main Street door in the Evacuation Zone and head north. You can follow the streets or move across the rooftops until you reach a construction site.
The construction site is blocked by a wall of green Mold on the right side of the main area. Kill the Mold enemy there to bring the wall down, then pass through the gap it was covering.
Back on the road, turn right. Dylan gets a vision of Jesse that triggers The Subway Fault, and the giant projections of her face point straight at Railyard Street Station ahead.

Open the Quest Log and select Track Quest so the objective marker guides you to the subway. This keeps the yellow diamond on the station entrance while you navigate the branching, mold-covered roads.

Getting through the subway tunnels to the Fault

The tunnels twist around and reconnect, yet the way through remains linear. If a route seems blocked, press ahead; if you’re unsure which way to go, descend.

Go down the subway staircase and grab the resource chest near the entrance. Pass the fungal-covered turnstiles, drop to the platform, and enter the tunnel that is not blocked by a train. A second chest sits just inside on the left.

Follow the curved tunnel to a Patterned rail track that runs vertically. Time your jumps and use Shift to stay on the altered surfaces as you cross the gap.
Drop through the first train tunnel, angling onto its side rather than continuing into the second tunnel below. Keep Elevate held while descending to manage your fall and avoid overshooting the ledge.
Go through the mold-covered opening to reach the next tunnel stretch. At the twisted station, with one tunnel above the other, drop onto the lower platform and enter the yellow-hued tunnel.
Keep an eye out for trains in motion: a hit sends Dylan back to the start of that pathway. Take cover behind a platform or inside an alcove until the train goes by, then dash ahead. In combat rooms, deal with the Mold enemies before proceeding.
Beyond a combat room, you’ll find a broad opening crossed by trains from every direction. Either jump onto the stationary trains in the center and descend into the pit, or float to the side platforms and drop from one to the next. Both options lead to the blue-glowing, mold-covered platform at the bottom.

Defeat the enemies on the bottom platform, then follow the last tunnel to its end. A glowing CRT TV sits at the finish. Interact with it to enter the Fault.

Talk to Jesse and unlock Reach

The Fault drops you into a golden grass dimension of floating islands. Follow the linear path across the islands until you reach the subway platform where Jesse waits.

Speak with Jesse to trigger the cutscene. This changes the objective to Help Jesse Complete the Ritual and unlocks Reach, which latches Dylan onto the glowing gravity orbs on the edges of buildings and platforms.

The Fault’s remaining Reach tutorial centers on three televisions. Grapple across the floating islands to the first TV, then proceed through subway corridors with altered gravity, using Reach to touch down on walls and ceilings.
Make your way up the vertical grass platforms to the second TV in the bedroom clearing, then traverse the raised rock pillars to the third. Continue using double-jump and dodge to get within range; Reach only fires at orbs nearby.
Ascend the final platforms to the hilltop clearing and approach Jesse beside the last TV. Interacting with it ends the ritual and closes out the mission.

Rewards and how to confirm the mission is done

You know it worked when the QUEST COMPLETED banner for The Subway Fault appears after the final cutscene. Reach is added to your movement kit at the moment you talk to Jesse, so the grapple orbs become usable immediately.

How to leave the subway with Reach

Use Reach to exit the Fault area and return to the room with the moving trains. Grapple between the side platforms and the stationary cars in the middle, but time each Reach after a moving train has passed or you will be knocked back and have to redo it.
Head back to the tunnel you first entered this room from and clear the Mold enemies that have respawned, since the path stays blocked until they are dead. This is a good spot to practise Reach in combat.
Retrace your route up the stairs and back through the tunnels, watching for trains and using Reach on the tracks to move faster. At the respawn point, do not go through the doors. Continue up the tunnel past it and take the doorway on your right.
Use Shift to enter the large room containing Mold and stationary trains. At the rear, a train blocks the rest of a small tunnel; pass through the doorway that triggers Shift automatically.
To your right, you’ll find a fast travel point and doors that open a shortcut to an earlier tunnel section. The fast travel point is the quickest exit. From here, you can go to The Spire and close The Underpass Fault. Reach is required, so complete it before Recursions and Iterations to reduce backtracking.
