Steel is a late-game material in Graveyard Keeper 2, and it does not work like the metals you smelt earlier. There is no Steel Ore to mine and no Furnace recipe to find. Instead, Steel Ingots are a purchased good, and you only gain access to them once you push deep into Jack’s storyline and reach the Royal Foundry.
Quick answer: Buy Steel Ingots from the Bishop at the Royal Foundry for 1 Silver each after finishing the Man of Steel conversation, then research Steel Smithing once you reach 70 reputation with Jack.
Reach the Royal Foundry to unlock the Steel supply
The Royal Foundry is the only source of Steel Ingots, and it opens through a chain of water-tunnel and floodgate objectives rather than any technology you research. Work through the steps below in order.
Raising your Metallurgy technology will not open the Foundry early. Access is locked behind the Town quests and combat campaign, so keep advancing those instead of rebuilding Furnaces.
Buy Steel Ingots from the Bishop
Once the Bishop’s steel-supply conversation is open, you can purchase Steel Ingots at 1 Silver each and buy as many as you need. Treat Steel like an imported material. You secure the supply here, then feed it into your higher-tier crafting rather than expecting your own workstations to produce it.
You will know the supply is active when the Bishop’s shop lists Steel Ingots for purchase after the Man of Steel dialogue. If steel-related recipes appear but no ingots do, the Foundry conversation is not yet finished.
Hold back 3 Steel Ingots for Jack before spending the rest on equipment or upgrades.
Deliver 3 Steel Ingots to Jack for the Man of Steel quest
For the Man of Steel quest, Jack needs exactly 3 Steel Ingots. Deliver them to him at the Town Workshop for the reputation reward. The turn-in also moves his industrial-show sequence forward, keeping his larger storyline progressing.
Unlock Steel Smithing in the Metallurgy tree
Acquiring raw ingots and gaining access to the Steel crafting tree are separate tasks. Steel Smithing is in column 12 of the Metallurgy branch; it gives you the ability to work with purchased steel.

Jack’s later quests around the Foundry are what push his reputation to the required level, so his storyline feeds both the ingot supply and the technology gate. If his reputation seems stuck, check the combat and character quests around his workshop rather than only his dialogue, since some of those gains come from clearing and restoring parts of Town. Once Steel Smithing is researched, the tree opens further into Steel Instruments I and II, Steel Casting, and Reinforced Barricades.
What to craft from Steel Ingots
After Steel Smithing is researched and the Steel Anvil is built, ingots convert into components and equipment. Each recipe also carries its own mastery requirement on top of the technology and station.

Because ingots cost Silver, spend them where they open new progression first, such as required quest crafts, workstation upgrades that block new recipes, and the advanced components that later feed Factory expansion. Steel Screws and Steel Detail show up across many higher-tier construction and automation recipes, so keeping some ingots in reserve is often more useful than replacing every tool right away.
