Reforge is the built-in transmog system added to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered. It lets Geralt keep the stats of his strongest armor and swords while adopting the appearance of any other piece he has picked up, so a maxed-out Grandmaster set can look like a plain Toussaint doublet without losing a single point of protection.
Quick answer: Finish the “Master Armorers” quest to unlock Yoana at Crow’s Perch for armor, and “Of Swords and Dumplings” to unlock Hattori in Novigrad for weapons, then open their crafting menu and use the Reforge tab.
Who reforges what
Two master craftsmen handle Reforge, and each is locked to a single gear category. Neither is available at the start of the game, and you need both unlocked if you want to restyle a full loadout. Reforge only changes how an item looks. The stats stay exactly as they are.

Both craftsmen sit in the first half of the base game, and since the two expansions are now included for free, you can have transmog running fairly early in a playthrough once both quests are done.
Unlock armor Reforge with the Master Armorers quest
Armor reforging opens up once you complete the “Master Armorers” secondary quest and hand things over to Yoana at Crow’s Perch. The quest sends you all the way to Skellige to recover lost smithing tools, so plan for some travel.
Unlock weapon Reforge with Hattori
Swords and the crossbow never appear in Yoana’s tab, so weapon reforging is a completely separate unlock handled by Hattori, the master swordsmith in the Glory Lane district of Novigrad.
To open his service, complete the “Of Swords and Dumplings” secondary quest. You can trigger it by asking blacksmiths whether they can forge a master sword, or by heading straight to Hattori’s home and helping him deal with Cleaver’s men. Once the quest wraps up, his crafting menu shows the same Reforge tab, covering the steel sword, silver sword, and crossbow.
How to reforge a piece of gear
Talk to Yoana or Hattori and open the crafting screen. The Reforge tab is the last one in the menu, marked with an eye icon.
You know it worked when the equipped item on the right updates to the new look and Geralt’s model changes to match, while the item’s stats stay untouched.
Each Reforge costs Crowns. Budget roughly 1,000 to 1,200 Crowns to restyle a complete armor set, both swords, and the crossbow.
Register old gear so it shows up in the menu
Reforge only displays appearances the game has registered on your save. On a save carried over into Remastered, most of your gear shows up locked, even pieces sitting in your stash, because the game has not registered them yet.
The fix is simple. Go to your stash, move everything into your inventory, then place it all back into the stash. Those items then appear as usable options in the Reforge menu. Once a piece is registered, it stays recorded permanently, so you can freely sell or dismantle it afterward without losing the look.
On a brand-new save this happens automatically. Every item you loot or craft is added to the Reforge menu the moment it enters your inventory.
Reforge limitations to keep in mind
- Dyes apply to the armor you actually have equipped, not to the reforged appearance. Look for the small dye icon under each gear piece to see what can be dyed.
- Dyes only work on Witcher Gear Sets. Unique sets such as Tesham Mutna or the Scarlet Crest set cannot be dyed.
- When two tiers of a Witcher set share the same boots or gauntlets, only the higher-tier version appears as an option, since a duplicate look with a different name would be redundant.
- Starting New Game+ does not carry Reforge over. You must unlock Yoana and Hattori again through their quests.
With both craftsmen unlocked and your old gear registered, you can mix any silhouette you like with your best numbers, whether that means running a full Grandmaster loadout that looks like a common town outfit or keeping a favorite school set on display well past the point where its stats fall behind.
