The Witcher 3 is generous with your time in almost every way but one. A small number of main quests act as silent gates. The moment you start one, any side quest, contract, or story thread tied to the area behind it auto-fails and drops out of your log, often with no warning. Knowing exactly where those gates sit is the difference between a clean playthrough and a permanently incomplete quest list.
Quick answer: Five base-game main quests close content behind them — Imperial Audience, Ugly Baby, The Isle of Mists, Battle Preparations, and On Thin Ice. Finish every optional quest in the affected region before starting any of these. The Isle of Mists is by far the most punishing.
Out-leveling a quest never fails it. Only story progress does. Witcher contracts and treasure hunts also stay in your log indefinitely, with a single odd exception noted below. So the rule is simple: clear the region, then advance the plot.

Imperial Audience: White Orchard’s last call
White Orchard is the prologue area, and you cannot return to it once you sail off to meet the Emperor. Starting Imperial Audience closes every errand here except Faithful Friend. Wrap these up before you leave for Vizima.
| Quest | Cutoff | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Missing in Action | Imperial Audience | Battlefield |
| On Death’s Bed | Imperial Audience | Sawmill |
| Twisted Firestarter | Imperial Audience | Willis’ Forge |
On Death’s Bed disappears once Velen is unlocked. Complete it before heading back to Vesemir with the griffin reward.

Add to Google Preferences →Ugly Baby: two Skellige and Novigrad threads
Taking Uma to Kaer Morhen to begin the cure advances the story past a pair of long-running threads. These do not vanish in the same dramatic way as the Isle of Mists quests, but they are tied to Ugly Baby’s progression.
| Quest | Cutoff | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Following the Thread | Ugly Baby | Novigrad |
| The Last Wish | Ugly Baby | Larvik |
| Flesh for Sale | Following the Thread | Trottheim |
The Last Wish is the one that stings. It carries Yennefer’s romance, and missing it closes that path for the playthrough. Flesh for Sale is gated earlier still, failing once Following the Thread begins.

The Isle of Mists: the big one
No other point wipes out as much content. As soon as you set sail in pursuit of Ciri, numerous available side quests across Velen, Novigrad, and Skellige fail automatically. Among the losses are Keira Metz’s entire questline, the Triss romance, the Radovid assassination sequence, and your final opportunity to bring allies to the Battle of Kaer Morhen. If you plan around just one cutoff, make it this one.
Velen quests to finish first
| Quest | Location |
|---|---|
| A Towerful of Mice | Fyke Isle |
| An Invitation from Keira Metz | Keira Metz’s Hut |
| For the Advancement of Learning | Fyke Isle |
| Magic Lamp | The Mire |
| Ciri’s Room | Crow’s Perch |
| Ghosts of the Past | Reardon Manor |
| Return to Crookback Bog | Crookback Bog |
| The Fall of the House of Reardon | Reardon Manor |
An Invitation from Keira Metz and For the Advancement of Learning decide Keira’s fate. Send her to Kaer Morhen so she joins the defenders in the final battle, which is tied to an achievement. Letting her die (or skipping the arc) is also what later unlocks the heavily missed quest A Final Kindness.
Novigrad quests to finish first
| Quest | Location |
|---|---|
| A Matter of Life and Death | The Bits |
| Now or Never | The Bits |
| A Deadly Plot | Border Post |
| An Eye for an Eye | Hanged Man’s Tree |
| Redania’s Most Wanted | Est Tayiar |
| A Dangerous Game | Rosemary and Thyme |
| Cabaret | Rosemary and Thyme |
| Carnal Sins | Vilmerius Hospital |
| Fencing Lessons | Var Attre Villa |
A Matter of Life and Death and Now or Never carry the Triss romance. A Deadly Plot, An Eye for an Eye, and Redania’s Most Wanted are the three prerequisites for Reason of State, the Radovid assassination payoff. Skip any of them and that quest never unlocks later.
Skellige quests to finish first
| Quest | Location |
|---|---|
| Possession | Svorlag |
| The Lord of Undvik | Undvik |
| King’s Gambit | Kaer Trolde |
| Coronation | Gedyneith |
Berengar’s Blade at Kaer Morhen also falls into this window, failing once the Battle of Kaer Morhen begins. You know a gate has tripped when the affected quests appear struck through and marked as failed in your journal.
A few other Velen and Novigrad quests have earlier individual cutoffs. Lynch Mob fails at A Favor for a Friend, Hazardous Goods at Ghosts of the Past, The Gangs of Novigrad at Get Junior, and A Walk on the Waterfront vanishes if you walk past it without reacting. Clear the open world early to be safe.

Battle Preparations: the Skellige succession
Starting Battle Preparations locks the Skellige throne arc. If you have not already settled who rules, the crown is decided without you. Finish King’s Gambit and its lead-ins first — The Lord of Undvik backs Hjalmar’s claim, Possession backs Cerys, and King’s Gambit itself decides the outcome, followed by Coronation. Note that these overlap with the Isle of Mists list, so finishing Skellige before you chase Ciri covers both gates.
On Thin Ice: the final free-roam cutoff
Beginning On Thin Ice sets the final battle in motion and ends your chance to roam freely. Complete two tasks first. Reason of State wraps up the Radovid assassination and determines whether Ciri gets the Empress ending. The other task is a single White Orchard contract that, unusually, remains available until this late before expiring.
| Quest | Cutoff | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Reason of State | On Thin Ice | Novigrad Docks |
| Contract: Devil by the Well | On Thin Ice | Abandoned Village |
| The Nobleman Statuette | Final Preparations | Novigrad |
| The Soldier Statuette | Final Preparations | Novigrad |
Contract: Devil by the Well is the one contract in the entire game that can fail, which is why it belongs on this list. Everything else from the notice boards sits in your log until you finish it.

Romance windows that close for good
- Triss Merigold: During Now or Never, choose the dialogue option asking her to stay. The romance is no longer available if you miss that response or begin the quest after the Isle of Mists.
- Yennefer of Vengerberg: To secure her romance, select the affectionate response once the djinn encounter in The Last Wish is over.
- Both at once: pursuing Triss and Yennefer together ends with Geralt losing both. Pick one.
Missable Gwent cards
Collect ‘Em All can become unwinnable if a card holder dies or leaves before you play them. Win and buy cards early. The riskiest sources are A Dangerous Game, the High Stakes tournament, and the Old Pals and Big City Players chains. You must win High Stakes outright to collect every card it offers. Several Velen and Novigrad vendors also become unreachable as the story advances, so buy them out while you can.
During A Dangerous Game, pick up the green statuette. Without it you cannot finish The Soldier Statuette later.

Hearts of Stone cutoffs
Hearts of Stone is self-contained and can be started at any time, but it has two small gates near its set pieces. Completing the auction heist in Open Sesame! closes the quests tied to the auction house, and stepping into Iris’s painted world in Scenes from a Marriage ends an open Oxenfurt errand.
| Quest | Cutoff | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Avid Collector | Open Sesame! | Borsodi Brothers’ Auction House |
| A Dark Legacy | Open Sesame! | Borsodi Brothers’ Auction House |
| A Midnight Clear | Dead Man’s Party | Brunwich |
Blood and Wine cutoffs
Blood and Wine is also self-contained, but several of its quests branch on the choices you make and only exist on certain paths. The quest you follow during The Night of Long Fangs — Damien or Orianna — decides which side quests you can even reach, and whether Syanna lives or dies determines the prison quests in the epilogue.
| Quest | Cutoff | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Amidst the Mill’s Grist | Wine is Sacred | — |
| The Warble of a Smitten Knight | Capture the Castle | — |
| Beyond Hill and Dale… | What Lies Unseen | Followed Damien |
| Duck, Duck, Goosed! | Tesham Mutna | Followed Damien |
| Blood Simple | The Night of Long Fangs | Followed Orianna |
| What Lies Unseen | The Night of Long Fangs | Followed Orianna |
| Burlap is the New Stripe | Tesham Mutna | Syanna dies |
| The Perks of Being a Jailbird | Be It Ever So Humble… | Syanna dies |
| Pomp and Strange Circumstance | Tesham Mutna | Syanna lives |
Two spots deserve special care. The Land of a Thousand Fables is a one-time visit, so finish Duck, Duck, Goosed! and eat the Golden Egg for a free skill point before Beyond Hill and Dale… pulls you back out. And The Perks of Being a Jailbird only appears if Geralt is imprisoned after Syanna’s death, then must be cleared before Burlap is the New Stripe wraps — a chain of conditions that leaves it the least-completed quest across the whole game.
Work region by region, close out the open world before each gate, and the only quests you will ever miss are the ones locked behind mutually exclusive story choices — the kind you are meant to decide, not accidentally lose.
