Kingdom Hearts 1: How to Get Through Monstro

Follow the green-lit passages in the right order to reach both Parasite Cage fights and escape the whale.

Follow the green-lit passages in the right order to reach both Parasite Cage fights and escape the whale.

Monstro’s inner chambers are a maze. Every room shares the same walls, floors, and lighting, the passages drop you between levels, and plenty of exits are dead ends or blocked off entirely. The trick to cutting through the confusion is simple once you know it, and it never changes.

Quick answer: Always take the passage glowing green. Starting from the Mouth, the route is Chamber 1 → 2 → 3 → 2 → 5 → 6 → 5 → 4, which leads to the first boss fight.

The green-glow rule and the correct chamber route

The rooms are called Chambers, and the numbering does not follow the order you visit them. What matters is the light. The correct door deeper into Monstro always pulses green, and a lone Green Requiem Heartless usually floats above it to mark the way. Ignore every other opening.

From the save point in the Mouth, where Geppetto’s ship sits, head into the large entrance to Chamber 1 nearby. After clearing the Search Ghosts, follow the green doors in this exact sequence to reach the first boss.

StepFromToHow you get there
1MouthChamber 1Large entrance near the ship
2Chamber 1Chamber 2Jump up to the green door
3Chamber 2Chamber 3Only exit forward
4Chamber 3Chamber 2 (upper)Green door on entry
5Chamber 2Chamber 5Nearest door
6Chamber 5Chamber 6Exit the far side
7Chamber 6Chamber 5 (upper)Door opposite where you came in
8Chamber 5Chamber 4Nearby door after the fight

Reaching Chamber 4 triggers a cutscene with Riku, Pinocchio, and Maleficent. Save at the station there, then enter the open passage into the Bowels.

Search Ghosts float out of reach and vanish to reappear elsewhere. Hit them with Blizzara or Fira to clear groups fast, and defeating them while they glow drops extra HP and MP orbs.

Parasite Cage, first fight (the Bowels)

Pinocchio is trapped inside the Parasite Cage, which has 450 HP and only two moves, both wide sweeps with its tentacle arms. One can be deflected with Guard, the other you dodge roll or step back from. Hit its face and belly with short air combos in the gaps between swings.

If you do not have Guard yet, stand on the platform by the entrance and chip away with air combos or Fira between attacks. Riku fights alongside you and will heal when your HP gets low, so this one is short. Winning teaches Goofy the Cheer ability.

Get High Jump and climb to the Throat

Return to the Mouth by dropping through the hole. The lowered water now exposes ledges that were out of reach earlier.

Open the chest on the ship next to Geppetto to receive High Jump. This is a shared ability that raises everyone’s jump height and costs no Ability Points.
Open the menu and equip High Jump. It does nothing until it is equipped, so confirm it is active before moving on.
Platform up the wooden planks in the Mouth to reach the door directly above the Chamber 1 entrance. Going through it takes you to the Throat.
Clear the Heartless in the Throat, then jump from ledge to ledge up the squishy platforms until you are pulled into the Stomach for the rematch.

Parasite Cage, second fight (the Stomach)

This time the Parasite Cage has 900 HP and Riku leaves immediately. It keeps its arm sweeps and adds two moves. It sucks up acid and spits it to drain your HP over time, and it plants its arms to swing its whole body forward. The floor is now acidic in places, so stick to the center platform and circle behind it to avoid the spit.

Keep using short air combos after its swings. Strike its head enough and it staggers with its mouth open, exposing the dark orb inside. Lock onto that orb and hit it hard. Melee drops HP orbs while it is stunned, so you can heal through the fight.

The poison and green acid patches both chip your whole party’s HP. Keep Potions ready and add Cure to your magic shortcut so you can heal quickly without stopping. Avoid stepping in the bright-green floor spots.

Beating it teaches Sora the Stop spell. The battle shakes Monstro so hard that Sora and company are sneezed out of the whale, with Pinocchio and Riku gone. To continue the story, set course for the world in the lower right. You know Monstro is cleared when you are back on the gummi ship and earn the Honest Soul trophy in the HD versions.
