A grey italic line reading “This item was summoned through cheating means” under an item in your inventory tells you one thing: that item was created with cheats switched on. In Valheim 1.0.17 the game keeps track of where items come from, and anything produced by a console spawn command carries this mark for good. The mark also travels. Craft a tool or cook food from a spawned ingredient, and the result picks up the same line.
Quick answer: The tag marks an item as created with cheats. It stays on that item permanently, passes to anything crafted or cooked from it, and carrying a tagged item blocks achievements until you remove every flagged item from your inventory.
What the cheated-item tag costs
There are two separate penalties, and it helps to keep them apart.
Confirming cheats permanently disables achievement progress for both the current character and the current world. That block does not lift on its own. Valheim 1.0 ships with 53 achievements, and a character and world that have confirmed cheats stop earning them from that point.
Separately, simply holding a flagged item puts a clean character into a temporary cheat state. While a tagged item sits in your bag, achievements are paused. Throw out every flagged item and the state ends. The line itself is grey and italic, sitting between the item description and the first stat line, so it is easy to miss.

Cheats cannot fire by accident. Valheim asks you to confirm once per character and world before any cheat command runs.
devcommands. The console replies “Dev commands: True” alongside a warning that using dev commands is done at your own risk.spawn Wood 10. The first cheat is refused. The console prints that the command is a cheat and asks you to enter confirmcheats, with a red line warning that cheats will permanently disable achievements for this character and this world. Nothing spawns yet.confirmcheats. A red line confirms that achievement progress is now permanently disabled for the character. From here, cheat commands run. This confirmation is asked only once per character and world, even after you toggle dev commands off and on again. With cheats confirmed, a spawn command puts items straight into your inventory. Adding a level, a radius, and the letter p places them on you instead of on the ground:
spawn TrophyDeer 1 1 1 p
spawn Wood 10 1 1 p
spawn Stone 8 1 1 p
Hover over the Deer Trophy that command produces and you will see the cheated-item line sitting under its description. A Deer Trophy normally drops from Deer at a 50% chance, and two are offered at the altar to summon Eikthyr, so the spawned copy looks identical to a legitimate one apart from that single grey line.

Which items inherit the tag
The mark spreads forward. One spawned stack of material carries into everything you make from it.
| Item origin | Carries the tag? |
|---|---|
Item created with spawn | Yes |
| Tool crafted by hand from spawned materials | Yes |
| Food cooked from a spawned ingredient | Yes |
| Item refined at the Forge of Potential, at every quality level | Yes |
Craft a Hammer from spawned Wood and Stone and it carries the line in its tooltip, even though the same tooltip names you as the crafter. The Hammer takes Wood x3 and Stone x2 by hand, and making your first one unlocks the Campfire, Wood Stack, and Stone Pile build pieces at once.
Cooking does not clean an ingredient either. Cook spawned Boar Meat on a Cooking Station and the resulting Cooked Boar Meat still carries the line, with its usual Health 30, Stamina 10, 20-minute duration, and 2 HP per tick of healing intact. The Cooking Station has to sit directly over a lit Campfire, or it answers that it needs a lit fire below it.

Anyone can read the tag by resting the cursor on the item. It is the only reliable marker, since the name, icon, and stats are identical to a legitimate item.
Why clean items got flagged after launch
After 1.0 launched on 9 September 2026, players on fresh worlds with no mods reported ordinary drops and gathered wood and stone arriving already marked. On servers, going through a portal could cause a brief desync, and items picked up during that window were wrongly tagged. The mark then spread like a virus: stacking a clean item with a tagged one could pull it into the cheated state, and crafting kept passing it along.
Iron Gate addressed this directly. A later fix stopped player characters from being mistakenly marked as temporary cheaters, which had caused monster drops to be tagged, and made cheated stackable items stop stacking with regular ones so clean stacks could no longer be corrupted.
How to get achievements back
If a flagged item is sitting in your bag, the state is temporary. Clear your own inventory first, then the chest you last pulled materials from, then anything you crafted since. Once every flagged item is gone, the character becomes eligible for achievements again, and current builds show a popup confirming when you can earn them once more.
For a character or world that has actually confirmed cheats, the block was first described as permanent. The 1.0.12 hotfix on 11 September 2026 added a devcommand that opts you back in regardless of past dev command or mod usage. It is a long phrase typed with every space removed:
yesiuseddevcommandsbutiwantmyachievementsanyway
Because it is a devcommand, you need the console enabled and devcommands active, and each player runs it on their own client. That fix shipped first to Steam, with Iron Gate stating the other platforms would follow.
The opt-in command re-enables achievements, but it does not promise to strip the line off items you already have. The surest way to keep a run clean is to never confirm cheats on the character and world you care about, and to inspect tooltips before you fold new drops into your main stacks.
