Scarthes are weightless remnants that drop from certain enemies in Norgan, the frozen region added in Dark Arisen. You never craft, combine, or hand them to anyone. Pick up enough of a single kind and they turn into a ring automatically, wherever you happen to be standing.

Quick answer: Build a single Scarthe type to its required count—10 Pulsating, 8 Frostbitten, 8 Sinister, or 5 Ephemeral. Once reached, a ring appears where you are; the count returns to 1, and the game displays “Effect determined by collected remnants.”
How a Scarthe becomes a ring
There is no menu, no craftsman, and no prompt to press. The moment you pick up the last Scarthe that completes a set, a notice slides in on the right of the screen reading “Effect determined by collected remnants.” Below it sits the result, for example “Acquired Ring of Plunderage,” and the finished ring drops straight into your items.

You do not choose which ring you get. Each kind of Scarthe has its own short pool of possible rings, and the game pulls one from that pool each time a set completes. The same kind can hand you different rings on different occasions. Collecting Pulsating Scarthes, for instance, can produce a Ring of Plunderage one time and a Ring of Rearrival or Ring of Contingency the next.
Once a ring forms, the Scarthes that made it are spent. Your stack in the Items menu starts over from one, and you build toward the next ring from scratch.

Add to Google Preferences →The four kinds of Scarthe and what drops them
There are four kinds, each with a different required count. Ghouls and Wisps drop Pulsating Scarthes, Fimbls drop Frostbitten, and Lesser Demons drop Sinister. The number you need varies, so do not assume every kind needs eight.
| Scarthe | Dropped by | Needed | Sell price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pulsating | Ghoul, Wisp | 10 | 100 G |
| Frostbitten | Fimbl | 8 | 150 G |
| Sinister | Lesser Demon | 8 | 150 G |
| Ephemeral | — | 5 | 900 G |
A Pulsating Scarthe weighs 0.00 kg and reads “Scarthe gathered from the overflow of ghouls and wisps. Collect 10 in order to create a ring.” A Frostbitten Scarthe reads “Scarthe gathered from a fimbl’s overflow. Collect 8 in order to create a ring.”

Which rings each Scarthe can produce
Every kind of Scarthe draws from a fixed list. Seventeen rings are split across the four pools, with a few rings sitting on more than one list.
| Scarthe | Possible rings |
|---|---|
| Pulsating (x10) | Plunderage, Rearrival, Contingency, Enervation, Sprinting |
| Frostbitten (x8) | Demonsbane, Inversion, Gliding, Soliloquy, Spellcraft |
| Sinister (x8) | Reversal, Audacity, Retaliation, Nocturnality, Rejuvenescence |
| Ephemeral (x5) | Plunderage, Reversal, Retaliation, Rejuvenescence, Inversion, Levity, Avarice |
Pulsating Scarthes are confirmed to form a Ring of Plunderage, a Ring of Rearrival, and a Ring of Contingency, and Sinister Scarthes a Ring of Reversal. Because the result is drawn from the pool, you can and will see the same ring twice, and a wrong result just means collecting another set.
What each ring does
Each ring has a weight of 0.01 kg and a value of 1,500 G. The rings in the Pulsating pool serve distinct purposes.
- Ring of Plunderage: Rarely lets standard attacks take loot from enemies.
- Ring of Rearrival: Equip it to your main pawn; a camp rest by the Arisen brings them back, forfeited or not.
- Ring of Contingency: survives a fatal hit once, breaking in place of the wearer’s death.
- Ring of Enervation: Returns some Stamina when the opening hit of a weapon skill connects.
- Ring of Sprinting: Dashing uses slightly less Stamina when the party has no pawns.
The Sinister pool leans toward risk-and-reward effects. The Ring of Reversal has the wearer take continuous damage in battle but heals them from enemy attacks. The Ring of Audacity removes Stamina cost on weapon skills at the price of chip damage while idle, and the Ring of Nocturnality flips between bleeding by day and healing by night.
The Frostbitten pool centres on the Ring of Demonsbane, which grants extra might against wicked beings, alongside the Ring of Inversion (halves Stamina, doubles Health), the Ring of Gliding (longer jumps and throws with the wind at your back), and two boosters that work only with no pawns in the party: Soliloquy and Spellcraft. The Ephemeral pool adds the Ring of Levity, which drops your Weight Carried status by a level, and the Ring of Avarice, which trades experience for extra gold drops.
How to steer toward a specific ring
You cannot force a single result.
Plunderage, Rearrival, or Contingency: kill ghouls and wisps and pick up what they drop. Every 10 Pulsating Scarthes yields one ring from that pool. Ghoul hordes at the Mountain Stronghold and inside Mordria Temple hand out several Scarthes per fight, so rings come steadily. The undead ambush in the Mountain Stronghold on the “Sage’s Wisdom – Riddle of the Will” quest, and the ghoul horde that follows it, can be enough to complete a first set.
Reversal and the rest of the Sinister pool: fight Lesser Demons, which drop Sinister Scarthes two at a time in the larger demon encounters. Eight produces one ring from that list.
Demonsbane: you have two routes. Collect 8 Frostbitten Scarthes from Fimbls and hope Demonsbane is what forms, or loot it directly from the Blemmyae boss in Mordria Temple. Fimbls drop one or two Scarthes during the fight and one more on the kill, so reaching eight takes several encounters.
Scarthes can be sold, but parting with them means more collecting before your next ring. Keep them instead of selling unless you have a reason not to.
Rings that look the same but are not Scarthe rings
Some rings can instead come from an enemy as ordinary loot, without the “Effect determined by collected remnants” notice. For example, a ghoul may drop a Ring of Contingency directly. A direct drop is not a ring formed from Scarthes; the notice shows the difference.
A Ring of Serenity that turns up after a fight with armoured warriors in Mordria Temple is not a Scarthe ring at all. The Ring of Demonsbane looted from the Blemmyae boss is a normal drop too, even though Demonsbane also sits on the Frostbitten pool. On top of that, Ring of Contingency, Ring of Rearrival, Ring of Levity, and Ring of Avarice can each come from appraising Abandoned Supplies, whether the Normal or Rare variant.
Common questions
Do I have to press anything? No. The ring forms the instant the last Scarthe enters your inventory.
Why did I get the same ring twice? The ring is drawn from that kind’s pool every time a set completes, so repeats are normal. Keep killing the right enemies and the rings keep coming.
