Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen — The Fallen Dragon Boss in Norgan, Explained

What the regenerating undead dragon at the Mountain Stronghold is, why it survives the first fight, and where the Norgan quest chain goes next.

What the regenerating undead dragon at the Mountain Stronghold is, why it survives the first fight, and where the Norgan quest chain goes next.

Push far enough into the snowbound Norgan region in Dark Arisen and the trail of rumbling the villagers keep mentioning leads to a single room inside the Mountain Stronghold. Waiting there is a skeletal undead dragon, the Fallen Dragon, that shrugs off everything the party throws at it. No matter how hard you hit, it rebuilds itself. The encounter is designed that way, and understanding it saves a lot of wasted healing items.

Quick answer: The Fallen Dragon cannot be killed at the Mountain Stronghold. It regenerates any damaged part on the spot, so the first fight is a scripted encounter you are meant to survive, not win. Its true body must be destroyed later at Lorade Castle.

Where the Fallen Dragon appears

The dragon is part of the Forsaken Dominion main quest Rumbles in the North. Your search for a second Arisen takes you to Norgan, where the mountain stronghold’s ominous rumble is the sole clue. The quest points you to a campsite marked by Dorin, then onward to the stronghold to discover the noise’s source.

Getting there is a long climb through the Valgr Ravine, the Old Villageward Path, and the Valley Cave System, fighting bandits, direwolves, and harpies along the way. Rivercave Campground sits on the route as a rest point with its own Norgan Portcrystal, and the Riftstone of Robustness can be restored inside the stronghold courtyard before you reach the inner chamber. Once you step into that chamber, the dragon crashes through the ceiling and the quest objective changes to “Repel the dragon.”

Why the dragon keeps coming back

The Fallen Dragon is immortal in a very literal sense. Its powers of regeneration mean any part you sever or shatter simply reforms, so chipping down its health bar in the usual way never finishes it. The word used for it later is a beast “abandoned by the cycle, by death itself” — it cannot die while its real body still exists elsewhere.

That real body rests at Lorade Castle, a fortress east of the stronghold. Destroying it is the only way to circumvent the dragon’s regeneration, and doing so is the goal of the follow-up main quest, The Castle in the Ice. The scholar Polyeidus works this out through his research, which is why the stronghold fight ends the way it does rather than with a kill.

Treat the stronghold encounter as a survival window. You are not expected to out-damage the regeneration here, so there is no reason to burn your strongest consumables trying.

How the stronghold fight plays out

Combat opens the moment the dragon lands and the “Repel the dragon” prompt appears. The beast fills the room, and a melee-heavy party can scale its snout to land hits on the head while ranged and magic users work it from the floor.

Climbing onto the dragon and striking its head is the fastest way to build stagger. Pawns stacking spells like High Levin and Maelstrom while the Arisen adds ice arrows piles on pressure quickly.

Focused fire can stagger the dragon, splintering its jaw and skull plates and knocking it down, leaving an opening for free hits.

That opening never lasts. The dragon reforms its head and, during the transition, vomits waves of lesser monsters onto the floor that attack alongside it. From here you are fighting the revived dragon and its summoned minions at the same time, reviving downed pawns while dodging stomps and tail sweeps.

However much damage you sustain, the dragon rebuilds itself fully once more, then unleashes a massive shockwave of blue flame in a scripted cutscene that blasts the whole party down. The Arisen is knocked unconscious, which is the intended end of this fight.

What happens after you go down

A hooded blonde woman appears in the ruins as the party lies unconscious, speaking of the dragon as something abandoned by death itself and resolving to shoulder the burden alone. The Arisen then wakes at the Norgandian Inn, with Dwayne nearby.

Outside the settlement, Dorin stops a group of Vermund Borderwatch soldiers led by Wash and the scholar Polyeidus. Polyeidus explains the dragon’s unnatural immortality and notes that Norgan is famous for being home to an ancient sage. That thread points you toward tracking down the sage, who turns out to be a Sphinx, and ultimately toward destroying the Fallen Dragon’s true body. The quest completes with the objective “Report back to Dorin.”

The Norgan quests that branch from this encounter

Clearing Rumbles in the North opens up a chain of Forsaken Dominion quests in Norgan. The rewards for the main entry are fixed, and several side quests become available once it is complete.

The Castle in the Ice is the quest that pays off the stronghold fight directly. It sends you east to Lorade Castle to find and destroy the Fallen Dragon’s life vessel, which “rests in silence cold” within its halls, and ends with a choice: destroy the remains to spare your world the devastation, or leave them intact at the hooded knight Eir’s request. The Snatching-Beast and Reaching the Far Shore both require Rumbles in the North as a prerequisite, so they only surface after you have survived the dragon and reported back.

So the undead dragon at the Mountain Stronghold is less a boss to beat than a wall meant to send you looking for answers. The regeneration is the whole point, and the fight ends in a cutscene no matter how well it goes. The real conclusion waits at Lorade Castle, once the sage has told you how to end a creature death refuses to claim.
