Start the quest from Dorin, hold the Norgandian Settlement through three night waves, and claim the Ring of Toppling plus 90,000 XP.

In Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, a Forsaken Dominion side mission called Village Defense assigns you one evening of night-watch duty in the Norgandian Settlement. Dorin, the settlement’s only guard, needs someone to cover him while his father Hal, the village smith, receives treatment for injuries from a monster raid. Take his shift and survive the attack to earn the Ring of Toppling.

Quick answer: Speak to Dorin at the settlement bonfire and pick “I am ready to defend the village,” then talk to Dwayne in Valgr Ravine to trigger nightfall. Clear all three waves to earn the Ring of Toppling, 90,000 XP, and 5,000 RC.

Requirements and what to do before you commit

Village Defense becomes available after the main quest Rumbles in the North. Until you accept it, the quest sits on the line “Speak with Dorin when you are prepared,” and nothing forces it to start. You can leave it parked across several main quests.

Finishing the side quest Reaching the Far Shore, which involves delivering the Taillour-Crafte Treatise to Hal, makes the game set Village Defense as your priority quest on its own. That is a prompt, not a lock. You still begin the fight only when you choose to.

Once you tell Dorin you are ready, fast travel is disabled. The map refuses any Ferrystone with the message “You cannot use this at the present time.” No Ferrystone is consumed by the refused attempt, but you cannot warp out until the night is over. Handle your shopping, storage, relic appraisals, and pawn swaps first.

Look for the red explosive casks beside the forge, arranged along the wooden fence on the route to the stone arch gate. Lift one and hurl it in combat to make it erupt in flames on impact. A level-93 Fighter using sword and shield, accompanied by two pawns, can defend the settlement with ease.

Starting Village Defense from Dorin

Find Dorin beside the big bonfire at the Norgandian Settlement’s center and speak with him. He wants to know if you will protect the village while he cares for his father.
Choose “I am ready to defend the village.” The other choice is “I need more time to prepare.” Dorin then explains the plan: the northern entrance is the weak point, so you should be up there at nightfall, and he has set out explosive casks for anything that slips into the village. He also asks you to look after his son, Dwayne.
Pass the forge, then exit through the ruined stone arch gate. Once the area label reads Valgr Ravine, look for Dwayne beside the path, next to a boulder, and talk to him. The view fades; night arrives, and the assault starts.

Holding the line through the three waves

The night runs in three stages that move from outside the gate, to the south side of the settlement, and finally inside the village itself. Stay near Dwayne throughout and step in when he is hard-pressed.

Wave 1: Valgr Ravine

The objective reads “Defend the village from the monsters’ onslaught.” White wolves rush in along the ground while harpies swoop overhead. There is no large monster in this stage. Clear everything, keep Dwayne alive, and the fight moves on.

Wave 2: the south side

When the ravine is clear, Dwayne calls you back toward the village. Follow him across the bridge and through the gate. A brief cut shows wolves at the southern palisade, and the objective switches to “Check on the south side of the village.” The breach is near the campfire and riftstone at the southern palisade.

Moments later the objective returns to “Defend the village from the monsters’ onslaught.” Cut down the wolves that got through the breach.

Wave 3: the large beasts inside the village

A massive beast with shaggy, pale fur scales the wall, drops into the houses, and stands on two legs. An unnamed boss meter marked with pips appears at the screen’s top. Its attacks include overhead blows with both hands, sweeping arm strikes, and stomps.

Playing a Fighter, work around its legs and back, striking until it loses its footing; when it hits the ground, press the attack. Ice spikes and lightning cast by your pawns can help topple it. Another creature of the same type is already in the village, and Dwayne will call out for help fighting it. Climb onto its upper back and neck by grabbing on for an effective approach.

Another beast appears by the central bonfire. Use an explosive cask if you want: lift one, then use the “Release” and “Throw” prompts to carry it closer and hurl it, producing a burst of fire. Finish the beast by attacking its legs and back, circling around the bonfire and well. The battle ends when the final beast goes down. Casks aren’t required; throwing one is enough to learn their use, and regular attacks can handle the fight.

Village Defense rewards and the Ring of Toppling

After the final beast drops, a scene plays at the bonfire: Hal is treated and back on his feet, Dorin thanks you, Dwayne vows to keep training, and Hal offers to make a wider range of equipment at his workshop. The screen then shows “You defended the village alongside Dwayne,” followed by “Completed: Village Defense.” Fast travel works again immediately.

A clean defense pays 90,000 XP, 5,000 RC, and the Ring of Toppling. No gold is awarded. The exact payout varies with how the night goes, but the Ring of Toppling is part of every version.

The Ring of Toppling raises your Knockdown Power while you fight with bare hands. It weighs 0.01 kg and can be worn by any vocation. It is not the same as the Ring of Brawling, which boosts Strength. As a ring, it carries a buy price of 1,000 G and a sell price of 1,500 G.

Dwayne normally works at the Norgandian Inn, though during this quest he is stationed in Valgr Ravine beyond the stone arch gate.

Follow the order of objectives as a quick check that you are on track: “Meet with Dwayne and defend the village together,” then “Defend the village from the monsters’ onslaught,” then “Check on the south side of the village,” back to “Defend the village from the monsters’ onslaught,” and finally “You defended the village alongside Dwayne” with “Completed: Village Defense.” Once that last line appears and the bonfire scene plays out, the Norgandian Settlement is safe, Hal’s treatment holds, and the Ring of Toppling is yours.
