Permafrost: How to Get Scrap and Processed Plastic at the Dismantle Bench

Scrap and Processed Plastic are the two backbone crafting materials you will burn through while rebuilding House Camp in Permafrost, and both come out of the same place. The Dismantle Bench breaks Metal Junk down into Scrap and Plastic Junk down into Processed Plastic, and it keeps working even after you walk away.

Quick answer: At House Camp’s Church, place Metal Junk and Plastic Junk in the Dismantle Bench’s recycling slots. Every 5 seconds, each slot turns one Metal Junk into 2 Scrap or one Plastic Junk into 2 Processed Plastic.

Where the Dismantle Bench is in House Camp

At House Camp, the bench is inside the Church, positioned beside a wooden side wall near an arched window and hymn board; shelves and red toolboxes are nearby. Entering it brings up an “Entering / No Build Zone” banner labeled Church. A fast travel point outside makes it easy to bring junk from anywhere on the map.

Approach the bench to see the “Dismantle Bench” prompt, then press F to open it. It is a camp-owned station, and there is no fee to use it. Recycling is available here without building a bench of your own.

You can also earn a recipe for building a Dismantle Bench yourself. It is one of the Quest Recipes, which must be earned through quests, and is not available for purchase with blueprint points.

What goes in and what comes out

Metal Junk contains unwanted metal components and can be processed into Scrap. Plastic Junk contains damaged synthetic pieces and can be processed into Processed Plastic. Each junk item yields two units of its material, and each bench slot processes one item at a time.

InputOutputTime per piece
1 Metal Junk2 Scrap5 seconds
1 Plastic Junk2 Processed Plastic5 seconds

By tooltip value, one Metal Junk (5) turns into two Scrap worth 10 each, and one Plastic Junk (1) turns into two Processed Plastic worth 2 each. Recycling is a clear step up in value, not just a conversion.

How to use the recycling slots

Press F to access the bench. Your inventory remains visible, while a Recycling panel containing five slots opens on the right.
Place a junk stack in a slot. At the bottom of the screen, the hints list the controls: move one item, transfer a full stack using Left Shift and click, or divide a stack with Left Alt and click.
The clock displayed on the slot ticks down from 5 seconds. When it reaches zero, one item is removed from the stack, a product popup appears, and another cycle begins. Keep the panel open and Scrap or Processed Plastic goes directly into your inventory.
Run multiple slots in parallel: assign Metal Junk to one and Plastic Junk to a different one, so their separate timers advance simultaneously. For the quickest cleanup of a large haul, distribute a single junk type among several slots.

Leave the stacks in the bench and shut its panel; work carries on while you’re away. Completed pieces collect there as loose items. Point at them and press “Press F Pick up” repeatedly until none remain. To remove junk from a slot, move the stack into your inventory; it returns as a complete stack.

How long a batch takes

A slot processes one piece every 5 seconds: 12 Metal Junk take one minute, while 30 take two and a half minutes. Each slot runs independently, so filling all five at once greatly reduces the wait compared with using just one.

Where to find Metal Junk and Plastic Junk

Both inputs turn up in and around House Camp.

Metal Junk from Damaged Cars

Metal Junk mostly comes from the snow-covered Damaged Cars scattered through the yards around House Camp. Walk up to one and the prompt reads “Damaged Car”; press F to open it like a container. The yard between the Church and Sean’s house has several wrecks parked next to each other. Sean’s storage chest also holds Metal Junk during the House Camp Flipper quest.

Damaged Cars open as containers, so you loot them rather than smash them. Do not waste pickaxe swings on a car wreck.

Plastic Junk from Trash piles

Find Plastic Junk in the low, snow-covered Trash piles scattered across House Camp. Equip a pickaxe to see the prompt “Trash pile … to Break”, then strike the heap until it breaks. Either a Refined Flint Pickaxe or a Scrap Pickaxe will work. As you pass, check the trash cans beside porches and fences as well.

What to make with Scrap and Processed Plastic

The Scrap tool set is the main reason to run the bench early. These are crafted at the Workbench, and all three together need 20 Scrap and 40 Processed Plastic, which works out to 10 Metal Junk and 20 Plastic Junk recycled.

Both materials are useful for base construction and survival gear, not just tools. For House Camp wall repairs, each Armored Wall segment requires 10 Scrap and 1 Wire; the Stove requires 30 Scrap and is listed under Utilities in the Building menu. Breaking down pieces at this bench also advances the House Camp Flipper objective “Disassemble the Metal Junk 0/10”.

Processed Plastic stretches further. It is used for Low Grade Fuel at the Workbench, which takes 1 Animal Fat, 5 Processed Plastic and 2 Oil per batch, so five Low Grade Fuel needs 25 Processed Plastic, or about 13 Plastic Junk.
