Fading Light is a House Camp side quest in Permafrost that asks you to supply the church with fuel for its heaters. You take it from a Combatant standing inside the Church, craft five cans of Low Grade Fuel at a Workbench, and bring them back. The reward is 50 Bucks, and the caretaker keeps buying extra cans afterward.
Quick answer: To begin Fading Light, find the Combatant in House Camp’s Church and speak with him. Produce 5 Low Grade Fuel; each can takes 1 Animal Fat, 5 Processed Plastic and 2 Oil. Deliver them with the line “I have the fuel.” to earn 50 Bucks.
Accept Fading Light from the Combatant at House Camp
Go to the Church at House Camp and head into the main hall with the pews, candles and sleeping bags. A character labelled “Combatant” stands there, with the prompt “Press F Talk”. The quest text refers to him as the church caretaker, and he asks for Low Grade Fuel to keep the church heaters running.
When you talk to him, pick option 1. I can help. (Accept Quest). A banner reading FADING LIGHT appears. This is a side quest, so it will not show up in the on-screen tracker — you can only review it in the Journal.

Open the Journal to see the quest under SIDE QUESTS as “Fading light”. The heading reads “Deliver Low-Grade Fuel to the church caretaker”, and the objective shows “Craft Low-Grade Fuel 0/5”. The quest text spells it “Low-Grade Fuel”, while the crafting list and your inventory use “Low Grade Fuel” — they are the same item.

Add to Google Preferences →Unlock the Low Grade Fuel blueprint
You can make Low Grade Fuel at a Workbench after unlocking its recipe. On the BLUEPRINTS screen, locate the recipe card: it requires Animal Fat 1, Processed Plastic 5 and Oil 2, and is made at the Workbench. Unlock it for 1 blueprint point by holding the left mouse button over the blueprint; the recipe will then show up in the Workbench list.
Materials needed for five cans
Multiply that by five and you need the totals below. All three ingredients are required — the Workbench will not craft a can with Animal Fat and Processed Plastic alone.
| Ingredient | Per can | Five cans | Value each |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 5 | 5 | |
| 5 | 25 | 2 | |
| 2 | 10 | 7 |
Where each ingredient comes from
- Animal Fat — drops from skinned animals and animal carcasses. A single red deer carcass yields a few units at a time.
- Processed Plastic — At the Dismantle Bench in the Church, break down Plastic Junk. You get 2 Processed Plastic per piece, which means 13 Plastic Junk will provide the 25 needed. Find Plastic Junk in the snow-covered trash piles around House Camp and smash them with a pickaxe.
- Oil — Search the Damaged Cars scattered through the yards around House Camp. Use Press F Open to check each one as a container; a few have one unit beside their Metal Junk, while many contain no Oil.
Since you need ten Oil, expect to check plenty of cars. Begin gathering it when you take the quest instead of postponing it until the end.
Craft the Low Grade Fuel at a Workbench

Once the cans are made, the Journal objective changes to “Give the Low-Grade Fuel to the church’s caretaker”.
Hand in the fuel and confirm the reward
Carry all five cans to the Combatant in the Church and talk to him again. Pick option 1. I have the fuel. The banner reads FADING LIGHT / QUEST SUCCEEDED, a reward popup shows +50 Bucks, and the five cans leave your inventory. That confirmation is how you know the quest is done.
If you speak to him before you have five cans, the only option is “I don’t have 5 cans yet. (Quit)” and the hand-in will not register. After the quest, he offers to pay for every further can you bring.
By tooltip value the five cans are worth 75 while their ingredients are worth 145, and the quest itself pays 50 Bucks.
