Dragon’s Dogma 2: How to Grab and Carry Bodies, Animals, and Objects on PC

Hold the Grab button to lift bodies, beasts, and boulders, and learn what makes you drop the load mid-carry.

Hold the Grab button to lift bodies, beasts, and boulders, and learn what makes you drop the load mid-carry.

Boulders, defeated monsters, and animals can all be hoisted onto the Arisen’s shoulder and carried wherever you need them. The same inputs work on all of them. On PC you grab with E and throw with the left mouse button.

Quick answer: With the animal, body, or object beneath you, hold E for roughly a second and a half to hoist it. Carry it to the destination, then press E to put it down. Avoid jumping.

Holding Grab over a dead nokken lifts it onto the shoulder and the control hints change to “Release” and “Throw”; the direwolf pup Skoll is carried the same way out of his cave, across the snow, over the stone bridge and through the Norgandian Settlement to Ilsa.

Grab, Release, and Throw controls on PC

The lower-right corner shows which actions are available at your current position. When a liftable object is nearby, E Grab appears among the controls. Once you shoulder the load, the displayed controls update.

With the load on the shoulder the prompts read Release and Throw.
SituationPrompts shown
Standing over something liftableE Grab, X Sheathe/Draw, Shift Dash, Space Jump
Carrying it on your shoulderE Release, Throw (left mouse button), Item Shortcut Ctrl, Shift Dash, Space Jump

Dash and Jump remain listed while carrying, but jumping will drop the load.

How to pick up and carry a body or object

Move directly above the animal, body, or object and wait for E Grab to appear among the controls. For a small animal, standing nearby isn’t enough—you need to be right on top of it.

Keep E held for roughly a second and a half; a quick press won’t pick anything up. When the body rises onto the Arisen’s shoulder, the controls change to Release and Throw.
Head to the destination on foot. We carried at a walk the whole way, so choose your route in advance and stay near the center of bridges and ledges, away from the edges.
Press E to Release the load at your feet, or keep carrying it until you reach the person expecting it. If it drops along the way, return to it, move directly above it, and hold Grab again.

What makes you drop what you’re carrying

You lose the load without meaning to in a few specific situations. Avoid these and the carry stays on your shoulder the whole way.

  • Jumping, including a small hop over a low wall or rim.
  • Falling off a ledge or over the edge of a bridge.
  • The animal you’re carrying can be knocked loose as you pass a sapling or shrub beside a boulder.

Carrying happens at a walk, with the options to set the load down or throw it on the HUD.

When something slides off from a tree or bush, you may not notice for several steps. Glance back now and then so you aren’t walking on empty-handed.

Quests that ask you to carry something

Carry a dead nokken to the braziers at Gagana’s Grotto

During The Castle in the Ice, bodies fuel the braziers. Place a dead nokken in a brazier that’s already lit; it flares and smokes, as intended. Pick up the nokken by holding E as before, then carry it over.

The stone platform holding the braziers has stairs. Use them. Its low rim looks easy to hop, but hopping it counts as a jump, and jumping drops the body before you reach the brazier.

Carry Skoll back to the village

The side quest A Hound and His Bone sets the objective Carry Skoll back to the village. Skoll is a direwolf pup, and this is a long haul, so it is the best example of doing a carry cleanly from start to finish.

Stand over Skoll on the floor of his cave and hold E to lift him onto your shoulder.

Skoll rides on the Arisen’s shoulder once you hold the Grab button over him.

The grown hound Freki may lie right beside the pup, and she can be lifted too. If you pick up the wrong one by mistake, press E to Release her and try again over Skoll.

Walk out between the stalactite pillars and along the foot of the hills. Keep clear of the trees and bushes so the pup doesn’t slide off.
Cross the stone bridge. Stay in the middle of it, since stepping off the edge or jumping will drop him into the gap.

Keep to the centre of the stone bridge, since jumping drops whatever you carry.
Go in through the Norgandian Settlement’s south gate and past the portcrystal.

The carry prompts stay on screen the whole time; keep walking rather than hopping any obstacles.

Character holding a load near a glowing purple object inside the camp
Pass the glowing portcrystal inside the settlement without jumping.
Approach Ilsa’s fire basket. Her conversation begins automatically when you’re a few metres away, and she takes the pup from you. Don’t press Release here; wait for the dialogue to trigger.
Character carrying the pup over one shoulder up to an NPC by a fire
Approach Ilsa’s fire basket; her talk starts automatically a few metres away and she takes the pup from you.

You know the carry worked when Ilsa calls out “Skoll!” and the dialogue begins. Her talk starts automatically and she takes the pup from you; you do not press Release.

Ilsa greets the pup with “Skoll!” and the conversation starts by itself.
