The Scarecrow opens as soon as you reach the Fields in the Fallen Village, early in Chapter 3 of Valor Mortis. A mutilated man has been strung up on a wooden cross in the open field, unable to die, and interacting with him starts the quest. He wants two stolen belongings recovered before he can rest, and both are a short walk from where he hangs.
Quick answer: Loot the Lover’s Pendant from the corpse by the big tree behind the scarecrow, take the Letter with a Drawing from the upper floor of the nearby house, return both to the scarecrow, then follow the crows to the barn loft and interact with the blue memory.
Start the quest at the Fields lantern
At the Fields lantern in the Fallen Village, rest before continuing along the misty dirt road. In the field, a man is bound in a scarecrow pose. Interact with him to begin The Scarecrow and add the quest to your active side quests.
Find the Lover’s Pendant
Walk past the scarecrow and off the dirt path toward the large, bare tree standing on its own in the field. A corpse lies against the trunk. Interact with it to loot the Lover’s Pendant, the first of the two items. You can hold onto it and hand everything over at once after you grab the second item.
Find the Letter with a Drawing
Find the second item upstairs in the wooden house beside the first lantern. Return to the house, go in through its open door, and ascend the staircase. The Letter with a Drawing is on a desk upstairs: it is a blood-stained love note torn from the man’s pocket. Read it to receive a journal entry and learn of the old shed, where the quest concludes.
If the direct shortcut back to the house is blocked, keep progressing through the mission as normal. The route through the barn near the scarecrow loops around and leads you to the same spot. Expect enemies, explosive villagers, and exploding cows along the field path, so clear them with a shot or a fire Transmutation before they close in.
Return both items to the scarecrow
Take the Lover’s Pendant, along with the Letter with a Drawing, across the dirt trail to the scarecrow and interact with him. He accepts both items at once. He appears to find peace, and the crows circling above fly away toward the settlement.
Follow the crows to the barn loft
Track the crows back toward the settlement. They circle over a ruined barn, the old shed named in the note, across the field. Cut through the lower house corridor and head for the barn in the distance. If enemies crowd the path and you lose sight of the flock, aim for the shack with the diamond-shaped window.
Clear the exploding horses and villagers blocking the barn with gunfire or a fire Transmutation, then climb the ladder into the upper loft. Glowing blue phantom residue covers the hay. Interact with the blue apparition to watch a short memory and complete the quest.
Rewards and completion check
Interacting with the memory shows a Quest Complete banner and grants your reward. You receive:
- A currency payout of roughly 6,500 points.
To confirm it worked, open the Quests menu and check the Side Quests tab. The Scarecrow moves from Active to Completed, and its journal entry fills in the story of the man’s death and the crows departing.
