Zoe Anders is a science technician aboard the Cassiopeia in The Dark Pictures Anthology: Directive 8020, Supermassive Games’ interactive horror release for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. She is a non-playable crew member voiced by Kathryn Wilder, and her survival hinges on a small set of decisions across the campaign, most notably a forced pick between her life and Noah Mitchell’s in Episode 5.
Quick answer: To keep Anders alive, choose Save Anders at the “Under Pressure” Turning Point in Episode 5, take the right path at the scanner fork during “Search Party” in Episode 7, and avoid being caught in any stealth section where she guides Cooper.

Who Zoe Anders is
Anders is the Cassiopeia’s science technician on Cycle 13’s mission, twelve light years from Earth. She is portrayed as a close personal friend of medic Samantha Cooper, which shapes several Episode 3 and Episode 5 scenes that affect Cooper’s “Playful” trait and Cooper’s Destiny.
She is one of three non-playable crew members alongside Noah Mitchell and LaMarcus Williams. You never directly control her, and she has no personal Destiny to unlock. Her fate is entirely driven by what the playable characters do around her.

How to keep Anders alive across the campaign
Anders’ survival is decided by a handful of Turning Points, plus stealth sections where a failed encounter can carry over into a later death. The order below follows the episode chronology.

The Episode 5 “Under Pressure” choice explained
This is the single most important decision tied directly to Anders. Young is forced to pick between rescuing Anders and Mitchell during a fire emergency. The outcome depends on what happened back in Episode 2.
| Earlier setup | Choice at “Under Pressure” | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Fire Control left active (reactivated in “Pursuit”) | Save Anders | Anders survives; Mitchell also survives thanks to fire suppression |
| Fire Control left active | Save Mitchell | Anders dies; Mitchell survives |
| Fire Control sabotaged and not restored | Save Anders | Anders survives; Mitchell dies in the fire |
| Fire Control sabotaged and not restored | Save Mitchell | Anders dies; Mitchell survives |
Episode 7 “Search Party” and the Anders double
Later in the campaign, Anders becomes separated from the group, and the scanner begins reading two of her at once. This is the cloning mechanic central to Directive 8020, making one of its clearest appearances.
At the fork in the path, the scanner indicates Anders went both left and right. The right path is the real one. Following the left path puts you on a track that loses the real Anders and disrupts the everyone-lives route. Use the in-game messages to confirm context as you move through the section.

How Anders interacts with Cooper’s Destiny
Several Anders scenes exist to give Cooper opportunities to raise her “Playful” trait, which unlocks The Rogue Destiny for Cooper. The Rogue is what allows Cooper to back Anders during “Suspicions” and help sedate Williams, which prevents Williams’ death.
- Episode 3 “Regroup”: speak with Anders in the Pod Room and choose Joke.
- Episode 3 “Search”: while Cooper is accompanied by Anders, open messages, contact Williams, and pick Joke.
- Episode 3 “Search” (large screen room): wait for Anders to move near the screen, then pick Joke followed by Dismiss.
- Episode 4 “Overwatch”: before solving the storage room puzzle and meeting Anders, message Nolan and pick Joke.
If Cooper’s Playful trait clears the threshold and you helped Anders in Episode 5, The Rogue unlocks, and the Anders-Cooper-Williams triangle resolves in everyone’s favor.
How to confirm Anders survived
You will know the Anders thread is intact when:
- The Episode 5 cutscene ends with Anders pulled out of the fire and Mitchell visibly safe due to the fire suppression system.
- In Episode 6’s biometric scanner sequence, Anders passes through as human.
- In Episode 7, after taking the right path at the scanner fork, the real Anders rejoins the group at the Charybdis pod sequence.
- She is present alongside the rest of the eight core characters in the final S.E.V escape in Episode 8.
Anders is one of the eight main characters that count toward the everyone-lives outcome. Carter and Simms are scripted to die regardless, so do not let their fates make you assume the run is lost.
Common reasons Anders dies
- Picking “Save Mitchell” at “Under Pressure” in Episode 5. This kills Anders directly, with no recovery later.
- Taking the left path at the scanner fork in Episode 7’s “Search Party,” which loses the real Anders.
- Failing stealth or QTE sequences in Episodes 4 and 7 where her position is tied to a playable character’s safety.
Keep those three pressure points clean and Anders walks off the Cassiopeia at the end of Cycle 13 with the rest of the survivors.
