Valor Mortis: Misericorde and the “End His Suffering” Reward

Granting the impaled soldier mercy completes the City of Orphans side quest and pays 3,000 Catalysts plus a Remnant's Return.

Granting the impaled soldier mercy completes the City of Orphans side quest and pays 3,000 Catalysts plus a Remnant’s Return.

In Valor Mortis, Misericorde is an optional City of Orphans mission built around a bleak choice. An imperial soldier remains alive, skewered on a tall spiked barricade in a street square, and William asks if you will end his agony. Choose “End his suffering” to finish the quest and receive its reward immediately.

Where the soldier is in the City of Orphans

You meet the soldier during Chapter VII, Witch Hunt, in the last third of the City of Orphans run. He sits past the Lantern in front of an iron portcullis and the cellar holding the Life Diverted amber, and before the promenade where Lucjan rests on a bench and the greatsword knight guards the gatehouse. The quest first appears as a “MISERICORDE / NEW SIDE QUEST” banner while you fight in the infested building next to the barricade.

Climb the ruined buildings and rooftops of the City of Orphans, using the grapple and ladder prompts, until you reach an office with an ornate red chest and a dispatch titled “SUBJECT: WARNING”.
Descend onto the lower stone landing and activate the lever set into the wall. An iron portcullis opens as a shortcut; the street square on its far side contains the impaled soldier.
Approach the barricade. The soldier is still alive and William reacts in surprise. The building beside him is infested with flying swarm insects, crawling mutants, and a bloated mutant, so clear it before you return.
Return to the soldier and use the interact button. The prompt offers two options: “Do nothing” or “End his suffering”.

A locked sewer gate below the same area needs the Sewers Master Key, but that key is not part of Misericorde. Do not wait for this quest to open it.

What “End his suffering” does

William gives the man a brief farewell, asks his forgiveness, and ends his pain. The Catalysts counter in the lower-right corner then displays +3,000, and the quest is complete.

You know it worked when the “MISERICORDE” banner shows “QUEST COMPLETE” with a “VIEW QUEST” hint underneath, and Remnant’s Return lands in the item pickup list on the right of the screen with a count of 1. After the quest ends, an iron gate leads down into a drained canal path and onward through the chapter.

Remnant’s Return and how to use it

Remnant’s Return is a consumable that automatically absorbs the Catalysts you lose when you die. That makes it worth saving for a hard fight where you expect to go down and want your Catalysts back without walking to the death marker to recover them. You can hold up to 99 at once.

The one you earn here is far from the only source, so you do not need to hoard it. Below are some ways the item turns up, along with its values.

Other pickups along the same stretch

While you are clearing this part of the City of Orphans for Misericorde, a few extra items sit nearby. Grab them on the same pass rather than backtracking later.

  • Exquisite Firearm Parts from the office chest with the red chest and warning dispatch.
  • Pure Blade Material and Distilled Blade Material inside the infested building next to the barricade.
  • A “Drawing of a Swarm Mother” pinned to an outside wall, which counts toward the Monster Hunt collection.
  • An Imperial Catalyst Clot on an elevated terrace.

Once you have the soldier handled and the area swept, the iron gate takes you down into the canal path and the rest of the City of Orphans. Misericorde is a short detour, but it leaves you with a Remnant’s Return in your pocket for the next time a fight goes badly.
