Claim A Spot For Your Base is the first main quest in Enshrouded, handed to you by the Flame the moment you wake as the Flameborn. It asks you to leave the starting tomb, cross a Shroud-infested cave, reach the open plains, and plant a Flame Altar to mark your home. Finishing it rewards 1,000 experience and chains straight into the next quest, Find The Sleeping Survivor.

Quick answer: Exit the tomb, fight through the Shroud cave to the plains, pick up 5 Stone, craft a Level 1 Flame Altar in the Crafting menu, place it on flat ground, and press E to commune with the Flame.

What you need to finish the quest

The quest runs through three objectives in order: Reach The Plains, Build A Flame Altar, and Talk To The Flame. You do not need to prepare anything in advance. Everything required is found along the route, and the only crafting material is stone you pick up off the ground.

  • At least 5 Stone, gathered from loose rocks on the plains.
  • A weapon for the cave. A Rusty Sword is found along the way.
  • A Torch and a Bandage, both looted from a chest near the cave entrance.
  • Open, flat ground above the Shroud to place the Altar.

Leave the tomb and reach the plains

After waking, walk north to the central brazier. The Flame ignites as you approach and speaks to you, accepting the quest and granting the Flame Altar recipe. Head through the doors to the cliffside exterior overlooking the ruins of Embervale.

Go down the stairs and check the shack on the western side near the cave entrance. Open the chest inside to collect a Torch and a Bandage, both of which equip automatically. The Torch lights your way through the dark tunnels ahead.
Enter the cave and follow the tunnel down. Grab the Rusty Sword along the upper path. Keep moving forward toward the blue mist, which marks the start of the Shroud.

The Shroud drains a timer while you stand in it, and you die if it runs out. You have plenty of time to clear this early stretch, and the counter is always visible on screen. Leaving the mist refills that timer.

Fight the blue Shroud enemies in the tunnel. Lock on with Tab, block or dodge their swings, and counter with your sword. Loot their bodies for Torn Cloth, Runes, and Shroud Spores, which feed early recipes. Break through any wooden barricades blocking the exit.

Cross the wooden bridge and exit the cave into daylight. You emerge onto the grassy plains above the Shroud, and the quest updates to Build A Flame Altar. A tall glowing beacon in the distance marks the suggested spot.

Build and place the Flame Altar

Walk the grassy area and pick up loose stones until you have at least five. You can also punch larger rocks to break more stone free. Collecting stone unlocks a few basic recipes as you go.

Open the Crafting menu with V, find the Flame Altar under Essentials, and craft it. A Level 1 Flame Altar costs 5 Stone. The finished Altar drops into your hotbar.
Select the Flame Altar from the hotbar and aim it at flat, open ground. A placement box shows the Altar’s footprint. Confirm placement to set it down, ideally over the glowing beacon marker.

You are not forced to build on the plains. Any area above the Shroud works, so pick a flat spot you want to live in long term.

Commune with the Flame to finish

Walk up to the placed Altar and press E to commune with the Flame. The Altar lights, a short scene plays about other survivors sleeping in nearby Ancient Vaults, and the Altar management screen opens. This is the final objective, Talk To The Flame.

After placing and lighting the Altar, you can build within a starting zone measuring 40m x 40m x 40m, and the world map identifies that spot as HOME level 1. Later, you can upgrade the Altar, widen its range, boost global benefits, and manage your skill tree.

How to confirm the quest is done

You know Claim A Spot For Your Base is complete when the communion scene ends and the main quest switches to Find The Sleeping Survivor: Travel Through The Shroud. Your map now shows a HOME marker at the Altar, and you have earned the 1,000 experience reward. The next survivor to recruit, the Blacksmith, waits in a vault just outside the Shroud’s reach, so head there to continue.
