Event Vendor Caches & Fast Travel Route

Red Moon Unleashed turns Washington, D.C. into a red-lit hunting ground where regular patrols are replaced by Moon Cultists, world bosses roam the open map, and six returning enemies each guard a specific exotic weapon. The event is live now and gives everyone who logs in a free mask, with daily altars, bounties, and milestone rewards layered on top.

Quick answer: Play between October 15 and November 3, 2026, kill Moon Cultists to earn Red Moon Keys and Revenant Bounties, complete all six bounties to unlock the Necromancer encounter, and spend Keys at the White House event vendor.

Event window and the free login mask

Red Moon Unleashed runs from October 15 to November 3, 2026, which leaves a window of roughly two and a half weeks to clear its rewards. It follows directly from Red Moon Rising and runs alongside the Phoebe Marauder event in the Dark Zone.

Everyone who logs in during the event receives the Bound Slasher Mask at no cost, so simply starting the game once secures that reward.

While the event is active, the weather in D.C. shifts between dusk and night, cycling from light fog into heavy storms and the deep red Blood Storm. Enemy pressure climbs during those heavier storms, with more Moon Cultists pushing toward you.

Lunatic Modifier

Enemies that enter combat have a chance to become Lunatic, which grants them bonus Damage and Rate of Fire. When a Lunatic enemy dies, it leaves a fire aura on the ground, and the radius of that aura scales with the amount of damage that killed it. Landing a very large finishing hit creates a wider burning zone, so give yourself space before a Lunatic drops.

Farming Moon Cultists and Red Moon Keys

Members of the Hyenas, True Sons, Outcasts, Black Tusk, and Underground now appear as Moon Cultists in place of standard patrols. They spawn in groups across the open world, and killing them drops Red Moon Keys and Revenant Bounties. Keys are the main currency of the event and are used to open apparel and gear caches at the vendor or donated toward personal milestones and community challenges.

The number of Cultist kills needed per Key depends on difficulty. Higher difficulty requires fewer kills.

DifficultyKills per Key
Normal14
Hard14
Challenging12
Heroic10

A Daily Key Boost halves the kills needed for your first 150 kills each day, dropping the Heroic requirement from 10 to just 5 Cultists per Key. This boost resets at 08:00 UTC together with the altars, so burning through those first 150 kills early each day is the fastest way to stack Keys.

The Necromancer also raises 20 Red Moon Altars around D.C. each day. Destroying an altar drops loot but alerts the Cult to your presence. Altars are replaced daily, so you can repeat the circuit every reset.

Fast respawn loop

To farm quickly, fast-travel to a safe house such as The Shop in West Potomac Park, step outside the safe zone, clear the Cultist group that spawns, then log out. Wait two to five minutes, log back in, and the group respawns for another clear. Other strong spawn hubs include the Lincoln Memorial, the DZ South main entrance, the Jefferson Trade Center, and Tidal Basin.

World bosses and the Necromancer Unleashed

Kill enough Moon Cultists and a world boss appears, roughly every 50 Cultist kills. Three bosses rotate through the map, each with its own guaranteed mask and a chance at an exotic.

Risen HunterBound Risen Hunter MaskVertigo / Exotic Cache
Bloody HoundsmanHoundsman Mask, Gloves, Backpack, Uniform, Bat Drone VFXRegular Hunter loot

Defeating the Necromancer or the Risen Hunter awards one Event Key. The Bloody Houndsman does not drop a Key, but it hands over a full cosmetic set plus a Bat Drone skill effect on top of standard Hunter loot.

A hidden encounter is available too. When exploring the West End Named Zone alone, you may face the Necromancer in his deadliest state, called Necromancer Unleashed. Defeat him on Heroic difficulty for one Event Key, a guaranteed Necromancer Hive skill effect, and either an Exotic Cache with an 80% chance or Ouroboros with a 20% chance.

Revenant Bounties and their exotic weapons

Killing Moon Cultists also has a chance to drop a Revenant Bounty. Each bounty points you to a specific target drawn from six returning enemies, now redesigned to match the Red Moon theme. Completing any bounty guarantees one Event Key, gives a 50% chance at a themed Arm Patch, and rolls either an 80% Exotic Cache or the bounty’s featured exotic weapon at 20%.

Clearing all six bounties completes the event commendation and awards the Necromancer Arm Patch. Finishing the full set is also the gate that leads into the Necromancer fight for its exclusive reward, so treat the bounty list as a checklist rather than optional side content.

A survivability-first rifle loadout handles everything in the event solo, including the Necromancer. The goal is to push Protection from Elites above 60% while keeping rifle damage high enough to drop elite bosses at range. Recent balance changes help here, with rifle buffs, a Rugged Gauntlets rework granting +50% Weapon Handling through Iron Grip, and Sawyer’s Kneepads now dealing 30% Amplified Damage to unmarked enemies (up from 20%).

Equip four pieces of the Aces & Eights gear set, rolling for Weapon Damage and Critical Hit Chance or Critical Hit Damage. The Lyudmila Snipers Mask covers one of those slots.
Fill the remaining two slots with Palisade Steelworks, including a backpack rolled with the Vigilance talent. This two-piece gives +10% Armor on Kill and +24% Protection from Elites, which forms the backbone of your survivability.
Slot Protection from Elites mods into every available gear mod slot. Stacking these on top of the Palisade bonus is what pushes your total PFE past 60%, letting you tank elite fire while you line up shots.
Choose a powerful rifle—for example, a UIC15 MOD2 carrying Boomerang. Recent rifle buffs make this a safe way to take down elite bosses from medium to long range.
Use Decoy and Scanner Pulse as your skills. The Decoy pulls enemy fire off you, and the Pulse tracks enemy movement, which removes any need for a ballistic shield.

You can confirm the build is set correctly by opening your character sheet and checking the defense tab. It should read over 60% Protection from Elites before you commit to Heroic encounters.

Spending Keys at the event vendor

The event vendor sits at the White House and accepts Red Moon Keys for apparel caches, gear caches, and community caches. This is where your farmed Keys convert into event cosmetics and loot, so return here once you have a stack built up rather than spending one at a time.

With the free Bound Slasher Mask secured on login, the clearest path through the event is to farm Cultists for Keys, pick up and complete all six Revenant Bounties for their exotics and Arm Patches, clear the three world bosses as they spawn, and finish by taking down Necromancer Unleashed solo in the West End. Everything closes on November 3, so the full reward set is reachable within the window if you work through the bounty list each day.
