Pedestrians in GTA 5 rarely swing at each other on their own. They react to aggression, not to each other, so starting a street brawl between two NPCs takes a little manipulation on your part. The reliable method is to make one ped angry, then trick them into hitting someone else instead of you.

Quick answer: Punch a pedestrian in a crowded spot, let them chase you, then circle a second pedestrian until the angry one connects a hit on them. The two will start fighting each other.

Best spots to start a ped fight

The trick works best where pedestrians stand close together, so an angry NPC has an easy second target to accidentally hit. Los Santos has plenty of busy walkways, but a few locations stack the odds in your favor.

  • Vespucci Beach, where crowds gather along the sand and promenade.
  • Del Perro Pier and the nearby beach, another dense pedestrian area.
  • The sidewalk in front of the Chinese Theatre on the Walk of Fame, where foot traffic is heavy.

Gatherings around gym equipment, such as the pull-up bars at Muscle Beach, pack several NPCs into a tight space, which makes accidental hits land faster.

The punch-and-lead method

This is the most dependable way to spark a fight without weapons or cheats. The whole idea is to redirect one angry pedestrian’s punches onto a bystander.

Walk into a crowded area and pick a target. Bump into a pedestrian, then throw a single punch at them. This usually makes them angry enough to chase you.
When the ped begins pursuing you, guide them toward a second pedestrian nearby. Keep on the move and draw the hostile ped’s punches toward the bystander, not yourself. Tight circles around another NPC work well; eventually, the pursuer will hit them.
Switch to first-person view while you do this. It gives you a clearer look at the ped you are steering the attacker toward, which makes the timing easier.
When the chaser hits the bystander, back away. The two pedestrians should turn on each other and start brawling, and you can watch without being part of it.

Faster tactics in crowds and traffic

If the single-target chase is taking too long, a few other setups rely on the same rule: a ped attacks whoever hits them, regardless of who it is.

  • Jump or barge into a tight group so pedestrians knock into one another and react.
  • Lure a pedestrian into the path of a moving car, then watch them attack the driver who hit them.
  • Position yourself so an attacker’s blow lands on a third NPC standing between you.

You can also turn this into a larger firefight in gang areas like Grove Street. Fire a shot in one gang’s turf and lead the chasing members toward a rival gang, or call the police so the cops and the gang open fire on each other. The NPCs mostly react to aggression rather than recognizing specific rivals, so whoever gets hit fights back.

Why it sometimes fails, and how to know it worked

What happens depends on how aggressive the pedestrians are. Some NPCs flee after a blow or a fall, whereas others start fighting immediately. The tactic can take several attempts to work. If a group still won’t fight after a few tries, leave and seek out another cluster of pedestrians.

You know it worked when the two NPCs stop reacting to you and start trading punches with each other. At that point you are free to back off and watch the scene play out, or pull out the Snapmatic camera to photograph the aftermath.
