In Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, Rose receives the Arcane Whip as her first traversal skill. It hooks onto glowing anchors and enemies, letting her swing across gaps or pull herself into areas beyond a regular jump. Progress requires this ability: the first chance to acquire it comes immediately after the opening boss. Reaching that fight means passing through connected sewer rooms containing two spirit clues and a hidden lever.
Quick answer: Defeat Leon, The Fallen, at the Gate to the Catacombs. Then walk through the exit on the right. The Arcane Whip unlocks automatically after a short dialogue in the Abandoned Sewers district of Paris Streets.
Arcane Whip location and unlock trigger
The game grants the Arcane Whip in the Abandoned Sewers district of the Paris Streets area. That is the chamber directly to the right of the boss arena at the Gate to the Catacombs. You don’t pick it up as an item or buy it. It is triggered by story progress, so these conditions have to be met in order:

- In the Ruined Market, use the concealed lever beside the barrels to empty the well and reveal a way below.
- Reach the Gate to the Catacombs through the Central Sewer Drain, Sewer Reservoir and Path of the Rat.
- Defeat Leon, the boss tied to The Fallen arcana card.
- Enter the room to the right of the arena and let the dialogue play.
The Fallen sits on the main story path during a fairly linear stretch of the game, so you can’t miss it. “Early” here means getting there quickly and cleanly. It doesn’t mean skipping the boss.

The spirit’s hint is fragmentary but points you in the right direction:
“The monster… hunts for souls… tried to trap it… hid the lever… near the barrels…”

Beating Leon, The Fallen
Leon goes down quickly. His attacks aimed forward expose the space behind him, so slide beneath a strike, turn, and attack from the rear; keep doing this. The second spirit clue explains that a well-timed steel blow can break his unholy cross. Keep pressing him with your melee weapon instead of holding back at range.

| Leon (The Fallen) | Value |
|---|---|
| Health | 800 |
| Attack | 19 |
| XP | 400 |
| District | Gate to the Catacombs |
| Rewards | Holy Cross, The Fallen’s Key |
Leon’s record lists immunity to freeze, petrify, launching into the air, slam down, Chains of Justice root and stun, Chronomantic Dive slow, Freezing Path link and Infernal Pyre launch. None of those tools are available this early anyway, so straight weapon damage is the plan.
When he goes down, hold E to absorb his core. That unlocks the Holy Cross arcana, which you can check in the Arcana equipment menu before moving on.
Claiming the Arcane Whip and confirming it worked
Leave the arena through the exit on the right. A brief dialogue plays in the next chamber, and the Arcane Whip is added to Rose’s kit with no extra input from you. It works by pointing Rose in a direction and firing the whip so it catches on a luminous anchor or an enemy, which pulls her into new areas.

You’ll know it worked because a tutorial screen pops up explaining how to aim and latch. On PC, aim with W / S / A / D and press Right Click to hook. Round anchors are marked with yellow glowing rings. Aim at one and hold Right Click to hang from it and swing like a pendulum. Swinging up from the anchors in the next room is the quickest way to test it.
Once you have the whip, go back to the Sewer Reservoir right after the first save mirror. Climb to the grate platform in the middle of the huge background staircase and whip straight up. That reveals a hidden anchor leading to a chest with the Cestus.
Arcane Whip reference: Holy Cross and movement unlock records
The Holy Cross you get from Leon goes well with the whip, because two of its three Works of Mercy are about whips. Completing a Work of Mercy earns Blessings that upgrade that arcana.
| Holy Cross | Value |
|---|---|
| Arcana card | |
| Attack power | 30 |
| Mana cost | 50 |

A corrupted cross launches and damages anything it strikes. It returns to Rose once it reaches a fixed distance or collides with a wall. The spell’s Works of Mercy are listed below.
- Find 3 different whip-type weapons.
- Defeat five enemies with a single cross; they can be killed at different times.
- Kill 10 enemies with a whip attack.
Its Gifts let Rose throw a second cross and make the cross hit harder the farther it travels from her. Catching the returning cross refunds 10% of the mana cost for each enemy it hit, up to a 60% refund.
For the whip-weapon task, the basic Whip weapon is found in the Catacombs of Paris. It has attack power 24, stagger power 30, costs 3 mana per hit, and deals extra damage at the far tip of its swing.
The Arcane Whip is one of five movement abilities, and each one is granted in a fixed district. Here is where each one is granted, so you can plan your backtracking:
| Ability | Area | District |
|---|---|---|
| Paris Streets | Abandoned Sewers | |
| Paris Streets | Stairs to the Tower Roof | |
| Clock Tower | Final Trap | |
| Library | Observation Tower | |
| Notre-Dame | Choir |
Hooking enemies doesn’t work on every target. Dracula’s record lists him as immune to whip hook, so plan to stay on the ground for that fight. For everything else in Paris, the yellow rings are your cue to reach for the whip.
