Nether Abyss is an isometric action roguelite set in an underworld drawn from Chinese mythology. You play an undead warrior climbing out of the abyss toward reincarnation. Clockwork Chameleon Games is developing it and Flawless Gaming is publishing it. Its demo launch trailer appeared at The MIX Fall showcase on October 16th, 2026, and the trailer closes on a plain message: the demo is out now.

Quick answer: A free Nether Abyss demo is live on Steam for PC. It includes a prologue, an extra boss challenge, and adjustable difficulty. The full game has no release date yet.

Nether Abyss demo on Steam: what’s included

The demo is a free download on the game’s Steam page. That same page is where you add the full game to your wishlist. Its contents are a small slice of the game rather than a time-limited trial.

  • A prologue section
  • An additional boss challenge
  • Adjustable difficulty
  • English, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese language support
  • PC (Windows) only

The Nether Abyss premise: Climbing back to the mortal world

The setup is simple. When a mortal life ends, the soul sinks into the Nether Abyss, and your character is trying to climb out of it. The goal is to reach the light of reincarnation and return to the living world. The protagonist is a dark-haired martial artist with a ponytail. He wears bandaged arms and an orange-brown travel scarf, and he carries a Chinese straight sword.

The trailer is split into chapters by brush-calligraphy title cards. They read “TO THE ABYSS,” “DEFY AND RISE,” “NARROW ESCAPE, CONCEAL,” and “ENDURE, THEN SLAY.” Each card introduces a different part of the game: the descent, the combat, retreating to the hub, and the boss fights. The underworld is built from dark wooden temples, subterranean docks, and caverns, and the camera stays at an isometric angle throughout.

Nether Abyss combat: Swords, talismans, and executions

Combat is fast hack-and-slash against swarms of demonic creatures. The protagonist mixes light and heavy sword slashes with ranged projectiles, talisman magic, area-of-effect spells, crowd control, and dodges. Damage numbers float above enemies, and the gear list includes ranged options like a Wooden Bow Lv1 alongside the sword.

Tougher enemies can be staggered and then finished off. In the elite fight against “Imperial Guard: Bull Commander,” a hit counter builds up until an “Execution !” prompt fires and triggers a finishing strike. Boss health bars sit at the top of the screen. On-screen prompts such as “E Interact” mark objects you can use.

Nether Abyss runs: Loot, Life Altar picks, and the Return Coffin

Nether Abyss pairs its roguelite structure with extraction. You head down into the abyss, collect materials, and then choose when to leave. That makes each trip a gamble between pushing deeper and getting out with what you’ve found.

During a run, you open chests and pick up drops such as Grave Soil, Qiankun Bag, Beast Horn, Licorice, Talisman Paper, Ironbody Incensewood, and Spirit Wish. You also meet NPCs along the way. One of them, Rat Porter, greets you with “Hey! Little brother! It’s a new face!” Interacting with a Life Altar opens a choice of three perk cards, which come in tiers such as Superb and Ordinary. The demo also shows a gate marked “Lost-Incense” and a Station that teleports the player.

To leave, you use the Return Coffin. It shows a “Returning to the Deep Tomb…” message and sends you back to the hub, the Nameless Deep Tomb.

Nameless Deep Tomb hub systems

The Nameless Deep Tomb is where long-term progression happens. It has several stations and characters, and each handles a different part of your build.

Hub featureWhat it does
TieniuBlacksmith who forges weapons
Refining FurnaceRefines on a countdown timer
Monkey TraderMerchant with crafting options
StorageHolds materials between runs
Relic loadoutEquips low, middle, and high tier relics

Meng PoGiant underworld NPC

Forging is shown with the Windcutter, a sword that Tieniu makes. Its flavor text says it gets its name from the way it splits the wind when drawn. One of its materials is a Specialized Soul Crystal.

The relic list leans heavily on Chinese myth and history. It includes the Swordmaster Ring, Earthshaker, Frostburst, Hidden Moon Jade, Red Crow, Qi Shield, Soul-calling Bell, Zhuge Liannu, Emperor Dragon Robe, Skyfall Punishment, and White Rainbow Piercer. The bone ornaments screen shows an item called Shan Wentie being equipped.

Meng Po is the goddess of forgetting from Chinese underworld myth. Here she’s a towering figure who greets you as “another fresh dried-up little corpse.” The passive tree is laid out like a constellation, with nodes such as Swift Ripples and More Faded Vitality. Elsewhere in the hub area, you pass through a Ghost Gate and strike a Dragon Chime.

Nether Abyss bosses shown in the trailer

The last chapter of the trailer is a run of boss fights. Many of the bosses are corrupted versions of Buddhist figures.

Zhu Yijun gets the most screen time. The trailer ends his fight with a “Defeated” screen as loot scatters across the arena floor, ready to be picked up and carried back to the hub.

Nether Abyss release date and platforms

The full game has no announced release date. PC (Windows) is the only confirmed platform. After the end card, the trailer runs a short stinger showing a huge red-skinned, horned demon holding a pagoda that floats above its palm. It isn’t named, and the trailer doesn’t explain where it fits.

For now, the demo is the only way to play Nether Abyss. It covers the prologue and an extra boss challenge, and it lets you try the combat, the Return Coffin extraction loop, and the Nameless Deep Tomb upgrades before the full game gets a date.
