Modern Warfare 4 Hired Gun: Should You Kill Graves?

The Graves choice at the end of Mission 4 has one way forward, and hesitating costs you a checkpoint or, on YOLO, the whole campaign.

Near the end of Mission 4, Hired Gun, Captain John Price stands over a wounded Phillip Graves with a pistol in hand. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 then asks you to decide whether Price pulls the trigger. It looks like a moral choice, but it is really a timed input. Only one option lets the campaign continue.

Quick answer: Yes. Fire as soon as the FIRE: R2 prompt appears (RT on Xbox). If you don’t, Graves kills Price, the mission fails, and you reload the checkpoint.

Graves choice outcomes in Hired Gun

InputWhat happensCampaign result
Fire (R2/RT)Price shoots Graves in the headHired Gun completes
Hold fireGraves disarms and shoots PriceMission failed, checkpoint reload
Hold fire on YOLOGraves disarms and shoots PriceRestart from campaign start

There is no third branch. You cannot spare Graves, and refusing to shoot does not open an alternate storyline, a different cutscene path, or an early ending. The game never rolls credits after Price dies here. It simply treats the moment as a failed mission.

How the standoff plays out

The scene opens with Price crouched next to Graves, who is lying on the floor. The two trade a short round of insults. Graves calls Price a prick, and Price answers that it takes one to know one. Price then stands, aims the pistol at Graves’ head, and the FIRE: R2 prompt appears on screen.

The window is short. Graves yells “Do it!” at Price. If you are still waiting at that point, he grabs the gun, turns it on Price, and shoots him several times. Treat the prompt as a reflex check rather than a decision you have time to weigh.

Confirming you made the right call

When you fire in time, Price puts a round through Graves’ forehead. Graves slumps dead against a shipping container, and Price walks away. Hired Gun then ends and the campaign moves on to Mission 5, Losing Ground. Finishing Hired Gun also unlocks the Dallas Operator.

If you hesitated, you will know right away. Price dies and a TRY AGAIN death screen appears. On normal difficulties, the game puts you back at the checkpoint just before the standoff, so you only replay the dialogue and get another chance at the prompt.

On YOLO difficulty, a death sends you back to the start of the entire campaign, not to the last checkpoint. Don’t test the “don’t shoot” outcome on a YOLO run.

How the Graves choice compares to other Modern Warfare 4 choices

Most of the dialogue options in Modern Warfare 4 only change a line or an interaction, and some decisions in missions like Following Orders and Stranded do have correct and wrong answers. The Graves standoff is stricter than any of them. It works as a pass-or-fail gate, and Graves dies in every version of the story that continues past Hired Gun. If you want to see the alternate outcome, try it on a standard difficulty. Otherwise, pull the trigger the moment the prompt shows up and move on to Losing Ground.
