Trailblazers: Into the March is a roguelite colony sim played aboard a traveling vessel. You command a Landship, a massive machine that travels on several legs and serves as the crew’s home. Recruit crew members in a walled city, then take the ship into dangerous wilderness for paid jobs, exploration, and battles with rival Landships. The official demo trailer runs for slightly less than two minutes, depicting the full journey from the city hangar to a burning hull during a forest firefight. It ends with the words “PLAY THE DEMO NOW.”

Quick answer: The demo is free to download on Steam today. The full game is developed by Strangers and published by Joystick Ventures, and its release date is still listed as to be announced.

Trailblazers: Into the March setting: Terminus and The March

The trailer warns at the start that it mixes gameplay with cutscenes. The cutscenes frame everything as letters. A bespectacled captain carrying a satchel full of notebooks writes home to their sister while staring at a glowing spire on the horizon. Near the end, the same character studies a group photo of the crew against a red landscape.

Home base is Terminus, a walled, steampunk-flavored city with a large colosseum at its center. Outside the walls lies The March, a wilderness that swallows what is left of civilization. Every run starts in Terminus, and every expedition pushes outward from it. The long-term goal is to reach the heart of The March and learn what is there.

Landship building and crew recruitment in Terminus

Before you leave, you buy and fit out a Landship. In the hangar, a robot named 2-BIP greets you as a new captain and shows off several walking chassis. Each chassis has a different hull shape. A top-down build view then shows the inside of a hull being laid out room by room, with furniture, engineering modules, and utilities placed by hand. Space is tight, so the layout is part of the strategy.

Crew come from a bazaar stall and a menu called “Recruitment – The Moires.” Each recruit has a class (Deckhand, Cook, Warrior, or Medic), points in four attributes (Brawn, Agility, Intellect, and Medicine), and personality traits. One recruit in the trailer has the traits “Mild Affection” and “Skater.” Recruits also belong to different species, such as Nomagoon, Hon’Dan, and Moranegun. Hiring costs money twice, once as an up-front fee and again as a daily wage.

Yurges SkolkorHon’Dan, Chef 224/4072 / 67
Tibi the GrumpMoranegun, Medic 221/3020 / 11

Price and quality don’t track neatly. Silvo Ridley is the highest-level fighter on the list and comes in full health, but Yurges Skolkor costs more and starts injured. Tibi the Grump is the cheapest by a wide margin. Each crew member also has a background and personal goals, and relationships form between them over a run.

Fixer contracts and the hex-grid overworld map

Work comes from a Fixer, a figure behind a lit desk who hands out jobs. The contracts screen sits next to a hex-grid overworld map of a forest region, and you accept jobs before plotting a route. The trailer shows these contracts and payouts.

“A Strange City” ties into the story. It asks you to find a city with spires inside the Primoval Forest, which matches the spire the captain watches in the opening scene. Names like the Leagues and the Principalities point to factions back in the city, and they hand out their own assignments.

Events and daily life aboard the Landship

Out in The March, the camera alternates between the ship walking through dense jungle and a top-down cutaway of its interior. Inside, the crew work stations, eat at mess tables, tend crops, run research, and treat injuries in real time. You manage their needs the way you would in a colony sim, except the colony has legs.

Travel also triggers text events with multiple-choice answers. In “Lost ruins,” the crew finds a vine-covered ruin with a dark cave entrance, and a monkey has wandered inside. You can choose “Go after the monkey,” “Leave the monkey behind,” or “Probe the cave before following him.” Crew members can also leave the ship to handle these quests.

Landship combat: fires, hull breaches, and timed cannons

Fights are Landship against Landship, in real time with a tactical pause. When enemy ships open fire, rooms inside your hull catch fire and the hull breaches. Your crew have to put out fires, patch the damage at repair consoles, and man the guns all at once. The cannons use a timing gauge, and a well-timed shot shows a “Perfect!” prompt.

Combat & Damage Control01:24Combat & Damage Control

Morale changes how well the crew perform, so a bad week aboard shows up in a fight. Injuries carry over too. The trailer shows a downed crew member being treated in the medical bay while walking tanks trade fire outside.

The Bloom, the Spirit, and roguelite progression

Two systems shape every run, though the demo trailer only hints at them. The Bloom is a fungal force that spreads through The March and can act as a symbiote, a parasite, or both. It works as a pressure gauge. Combat, resource extraction, and letting the Bloom grow inside your ship all fill it, and a fuller gauge sets off events that make the run harder. Bloom leeches can also attach to the ship or the crew and drain resources and health.

Your main defense is the Spirit that lives at the heart of the Landship. It is a small elemental being whose energy can become fireflies that clear the Bloom from your ship. Each Spirit has its own moods and preferences, and some actively like fighting. As in most roguelites, losing a run doesn’t erase everything. Progress carries over between expeditions, and the terrain of The March changes from run to run.

Trailblazers: Into the March demo, platforms, and release date

The playable demo has its own Steam listing, separate from the main store page. You can add the full game to your wishlist from either one.

  • Developer is Strangers, and publisher is Joystick Ventures.
  • The store lists Windows and macOS, and system requirements are still TBD.
  • The Windows demo has been run on Linux through Proton without issues.
  • It is single-player, with Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud, and Family Sharing.
  • There are 13 interface and subtitle languages, with full audio in English only.

The full game’s release date is to be announced, and no launch window has been confirmed. For now, the demo is the only way to play. It covers the whole loop the trailer shows, including outfitting a ship in Terminus, hiring a crew, taking a Fixer contract, and walking out into The March to see what attacks first.
