MW4 DMZ Death From Above: How to Trick a Drone With a Decoy Grenade

Death From Above is an Order in the Underground chapter of Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ mode. Its first task, Trick a Drone With a Decoy Grenade, has two obstacles. You need a tactical you may not be carrying, and you need a drone, which never appears as a marker on your Tac Map. Once you have both, the task completes in a few seconds.

Quick answer: Print a Decoy Grenade at the FOB’s 3D Printer, deploy, find a combat drone, and throw the decoy near it. The task completes when the drone turns toward the decoy.

Decoy Grenade location: Loot spots and 3D Printer recipe

You need at least one Decoy Grenade before you deploy, or you need to pick one up during the match. There are two ways to get one.

Crafting is the more reliable option because the grenade goes straight to your Operator before you deploy.

Go to the 3D Printer in your FOB and interact with it. The crafting interface opens on its first tab.

Move from the Upgrades tab to the Tacticals tab. This tab lists the craftable tactical equipment.

Select Decoy Grenade and check that you have enough synthetics and chemicals. The recipe uses both materials.

Choose Print to Operator. The grenade is added to your loadout instead of your storage, so you don’t have to equip it separately.

Print more than one if you have the materials. A second decoy gives you another attempt if your first throw lands too far from the drone.

Where drones spawn in MW4 DMZ

Drones have no Tac Map marker, so you have to look for them. They usually guard high-security zones, which show up as red-marked areas on the Tac Map. Heavily armed guards patrol those zones too, so bring armor and spare ammo.

Songdo Wharf is the most efficient stop. All four drones there respond to a single decoy, so you can finish the kill count in the same fight. In Najin City, a Combat Drone patrols above the road barriers near the highway overpass. You can see it from down the street.

How to trick a drone with a Decoy Grenade

Deploy with the Decoy Grenade equipped and travel to one of the drone locations. Clear the nearby guards before you engage so they don’t pin you down.

Find the drone. In Najin City, look down the street toward the overpass, where the drone hovers above the road.

Shoot the drone to get its attention, then let it move toward you. The decoy has to land close to an active drone.

Throw the Decoy Grenade into the open area near the drone, such as the street below it. Wait for the drone to switch its focus to the decoy.

You’ll know it worked when the completion notice for Trick a Drone With a Decoy Grenade appears and the task in the Order shows 1/1. If it doesn’t appear, the drone hasn’t diverted yet. Stay in cover until it does.

Destroying drones and looting a Drone Motherboard

Drones that are fixed on the decoy are easy targets, so shoot them while they’re distracted. At Songdo Wharf, all four drones gather around the decoy. Destroy at least three to complete Destroy 3 Drones.

Every destroyed drone drops a Drone Motherboard. Pick up one from any wreck and the last task completes. Then exfil so the progress is saved and the next page of Orders can unlock.
