Thirst is one of the fastest ways to die in Subnautica 2, and the ocean around you is useless for drinking. The good news is that the first hydration recipe is unlocked from the moment you crawl into the Lifepod, and the only ingredient is sitting on the seafloor a few meters below you.
What you need to craft Water

The starter Water recipe in Subnautica 2 has the shortest ingredient list in the game. You need a single Water Slug and access to the Fabricator mounted on the wall inside your Lifepod. No tools, no batteries, no extra unlocks.
| Recipe | Ingredient | Hydration restored |
|---|---|---|
| Water | Water Slug ×1 | +40 |
| Isotonic Water | Flash Slug ×1, Salt ×1 | Hydration + stamina effect |
| Water (alternate) | Fibrous Pulp ×3 | +40 (requires Processor) |
The Fibrous Pulp version unlocks later, once you have built a Processor inside a habitat. For your first few hours, the slug route is the only one that matters.

Water Slugs are small, translucent blue and pink creatures that crawl along the seafloor. They look a bit like spiky sponges and they do not swim away when you approach. The densest spawns are directly beneath the Lifepod, scattered through the short yellow anemone fields and grassy patches of the starting biome.

They are easier to spot at night because they glow against the dark seabed. If you are struggling to see them in daylight, try diving along the edges of grass clusters and looking down rather than out into open water.
Crafting Water at the Fabricator

Carrying water on dives
Hydration drains noticeably faster than hunger, especially during long swims and base-building runs. Two bottles is a sensible minimum to bring on any expedition past the immediate Lifepod area, and three is safer once you start scouting deeper biomes.
Because Water Slugs do not expire in inventory, the most efficient pattern is to grab a batch of five whenever you pass the seafloor, then convert them on your way back through the Lifepod. That way you always have raw stock and finished bottles ready to grab before heading out.
When the Fibrous Pulp recipe becomes useful
Once you have built a habitat with a Processor, Water can also be made from 3 Fibrous Pulp. Fibrous Pulp comes from harvesting plant life like Macaron Sponges with the Survival Multitool, so it scales well in biomes where Water Slugs are scarce.
It is slower per bottle than the slug recipe, but it removes your dependency on a single creature spawn and is worth setting up before you start exploring further from the starting biome. Until then, slugs remain the fastest and cheapest path to a full thirst meter.
