Hollow is one of three playable races in VV: ULTIMATUM, and it is the one with the longest, most hands-on path to power. You start as a fragile skeleton-like creature and end as an Arrancar with a Resurrección transformation. The choice happens right after the tutorial, alongside Quincy and Shinigami, and once you commit you follow a chain of evolutions that each change your stats and unlock new options.
Quick answer: Select Hollow after the tutorial, pick a Hollow type (Gorilla is the safest), consume other Hollows until you auto-evolve into a Menos, complete the red questline to reach Adjuchas and then Vasto Lorde for the fourth trait slot, press L to remove your mask and become an Arrancar, then meditate with your weapon equipped to clear the Resurrección trial.

Choose the Hollow race after the tutorial
Finish the tutorial first. It teaches the basic attacks, dodging, parrying, counters, and movement that the rest of the game relies on, and it sets up the first boss, Gelum. Beating Gelum is optional but strongly recommended, because it is a controlled place to learn parry timing and AoE dodging before later fights become much harsher.
When the faction screen appears, select Hollow. Be aware this is the most demanding of the three races to play early, since you begin weaker than Quincy and Shinigami and only scale up as you evolve.

Add to Google Preferences →Pick your Hollow type (Gorilla recommended)
After choosing Hollow, you get one of four starting variants. This matters more than it looks, because you fight a copy of your chosen type during the Resurrección trial later. Gorilla is the balanced, all-purpose pick. Turtle survives well but has delayed attacks that are awkward to parry against you, and Centipede’s extreme speed makes its trial version genuinely hard. Lizard is fine if you like mobility.

| Hollow type | Effect | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Gorilla | No buffs or debuffs | Balanced, safest overall pick |
| Turtle | Higher defense, slower | Durable, but harder trial parries |
| Lizard | Faster, lower defense | Good for aggressive, mobile play |
| Centipede | Much faster, lower defense and damage | Trial version is tough due to speed |
Evolve from Fishbone to Menos

Farm Hollow Traits before you remove your mask
Traits are permanent. They carry through your Arrancar and Resurrección forms, so they shape your build for the rest of the character’s life. You get them by defeating Hollows and consuming their remains for a chance at a trait. When prompted, you can press “No” to reject a trait you do not want, which keeps junk off your build.
The number of traits you can equip depends on how far you evolve before becoming an Arrancar. Menoscar gives 2 slots, Adjuchas gives 3, and Vasto Lorde gives 4. Critically, traits can no longer be gained once you are an Arrancar, so lock in everything you want first.
| Trait | Effect |
|---|---|
| Iron Skin | +4% Melee Defense, +35% Posture Regen |
| Deadly Claws | +3% Hakuda Damage, +0.1 Max AP |
| Wings | +3% Movement Speed, +5% Shunpo Stamina, +3% Shunpo Speed |
| Skinny | +7.5% Movement Speed, -1.2% Melee Defense |
| Tentacles | 16% chance of poison on melee, -1% Weapon damage |
| Horns | +35% cero width, +10% cero length |
| Tailbone | +20% cero damage, cero 25% thinner |
| Energized | +2% Kido Damage, Weapon damage scales off Kido |
| Innocuous Presence | Hides name and reiatsu, +20s Resurrection, +5% Movement Speed |
Note: Iron Skin, Deadly Claws, and Wings are reliable picks for most builds. Trait effects can stack with the passive buffs from your Hollow clan, which is rolled later as an Arrancar through a gacha-style reroll system.
Push to Adjuchas, then Vasto Lorde
Once you are a Menos, you can press L to immediately become a Menoscar (an Arrancar with 2 trait slots), but you lose all further progression if you do. It is almost always better to keep evolving.
When running missions, you will be asked whether to enable invasions. Keep invasions off if you are still learning, since it removes the risk of other players interrupting you. You can switch them back on later for extra PvP.
Reaching Vasto Lorde grants the fourth and final trait slot, which is the main reason to take this path. Do not remove your mask yet if you are still missing a trait you want, because trait farming ends the moment you become an Arrancar.

Become an Arrancar
When your traits are set, press L to rip off your mask. Becoming an Arrancar resets your stats, which is why you equip your desired traits first. You then customize your Arrancar appearance, roll your clan, and receive a personal weapon.
The Spear is a strong starting weapon thanks to its long range, which helps in most encounters. This weapon stays central to your combat through early and mid-game.

Unlock Resurrección through meditation
If a “Hey, listen” audio cue plays, a Vasto Lorde NPC has spawned in the overworld. Find it, speak to it, and continue. Missing these encounters slows your advancement. If your character keeps falling asleep during meditation, it means you need more XP before you can progress further.
Clear the Resurrección trial
Once the Inner World is fully developed, following the red eyes leads straight to your Inner Hollow and starts the trial. It runs in three phases. Phase 1 is the Hollow type you picked at creation. Phase 2 is a Menos, which trips up many players because of its delayed, awkward attack timing. Phase 3 is a stronger Hollow form with extra abilities that punishes mistakes hard.
Play defensively across all three phases, leaning roughly 90% defense to 10% offense. Be patient against the Menos stomp timings, block Cero when needed, and aim for posture breaks rather than greedy trades. Preserve health in the early phases so you have a cushion for the final one.
If you fail, you do not lose progress on the unlock itself. Simply meditate again to re-enter the challenge and retry as many times as needed.

How you know it worked
Clearing all three trial phases unlocks Resurrección, a transformation mode with new abilities and a clear jump in combat strength. You activate it using your weapon’s transformation command. From there your abilities keep growing through Ability Levels, which strengthen your skills and unlock further customization the more you use them in combat.
For the absolute peak version of the build, there is one more step beyond Resurrección. From Vasto Lorde you can eventually evolve into a Vastocar, the final form of the Hollow line. It resets your stats and traits but turns you into a full Arrancar with access to unique Arrancar weapons.
