How to Complete A Roof Over My Head in Gothic 1 Remake

Claim your own house in the New Camp by talking to Gorn and beating Shrike in a fistfight.

Claim your own house in the New Camp by talking to Gorn and beating Shrike in a fistfight.

Owning a house is the only way to rest and skip time in Gothic 1 Remake, and the New Camp does not hand one over freely. The A Roof Over My Head quest gives you that bed, but you have to take it from a bandit named Shrike before the camp will let you sleep there.

Quick answer: Speak to Gorn near the right side of the New Camp entrance to start the quest, then walk to the opposite side and beat Shrike in a fistfight until he drops. Return to Gorn to finish and claim the house.

What you need before starting A Roof Over My Head

The quest lives entirely inside the New Camp, so you first need to reach that camp. If you cannot find the route, ask Drax near the hunting grounds to escort you, or travel west from the Old Camp past Cavalhorn’s hut once your stats are high enough to survive the trip.

The fight itself is a straight fistfight, so decent stats and a little health buffer matter more than a strong weapon. The bigger risk is the crowd of nearby bandits and Cronos the water mage, who can turn hostile if you draw the fight out.

How to complete A Roof Over My Head in the New Camp

When you first reach the main cavern, you will see Shrike working on the wall of his house. Talking to him directly and asking to sleep there gets you nothing but a refusal, which is normal. The real path runs through Gorn.

From the New Camp entrance, take the right-hand path. You will find Gorn, a mercenary, leaning against the wall of one of the houses. Speak to him about finding a place to sleep.

Gorn explains that every house is occupied and the only one you can claim is the one Shrike is using. This starts the quest and points you toward taking that house by force.
Head to the opposite side of the entrance, where Shrike is still busy with the wall. Approach him and start swinging until he falls to the ground. Defeat him quickly so the fight does not spread.

The moment Shrike goes down, put your weapon away. Holstering immediately stops other NPCs in the camp from joining in, and it keeps Cronos the water mage from turning on you mid-brawl.

Go back to Gorn and speak with him again. He confirms the house is now yours, which completes A Roof Over My Head.

Quest reward and how to confirm it worked

Completing the quest gives you 100 XP and a house in the New Camp. You know it worked when Gorn’s final dialogue hands over the house and the quest closes in your journal. After that, you can walk inside, use the bed, and choose how many hours to sleep.

Resting in that bed restores your HP and Mana based on how long you sleep, and it advances time, which several quests rely on. To sleep, find the bed inside the house, press the interact button, and pick the number of hours you want to rest.

Other bandits join the fightHolster your weapon the instant Shrike is down
Cronos the water mage turns hostileWatch the surroundings and end the fight fast before he aggros
Talking to Shrike does nothingStart the quest with Gorn first, then return to beat Shrike

With the house secured, you have a safe place to wait out the dangerous nights and a free spot to recover before tackling the rest of the New Camp. It is one of the first things worth locking down once you arrive, just as a free hut is in the Old Camp.
