Beasts of Khorinis I in Gothic 1 Remake: Book Location and Cavalorn Answers

Where to steal the Bestiary, who to hand it to, and the three correct replies that finish the quest.

Where to steal the Bestiary, who to hand it to, and the three correct replies that finish the quest.

The Colony side quest “Beasts of Khorinis I” in Gothic 1 Remake hinges on one item and one conversation. You need the book “Bestiary of Khorinis I,” and you need to pass a short knowledge test from the hunter Cavalorn. Get both right, and you walk away with a healing skill and experience.

Quick answer: Steal the “Bestiary of Khorinis I” from Janek’s hut south of the New Camp, take it to Cavalorn on the road between the Old and New Camps, and answer his three questions with “along the spine,” “to amplify sounds,” and “to protect their territory.”

How the quest starts

The quest only appears in your journal once the “Bestiary of Khorinis I” is in your inventory. There is no NPC who hands it to you and no dialogue trigger before that. Picking up the book is the trigger, so the entire task begins with a small bit of theft.

Where to find the Bestiary of Khorinis I (Janek’s hut)

The book belongs to a man named Janek. His hut sits south of the New Camp. The Bestiary is tucked out of plain view, so you cannot simply grab it in front of him without trouble.

Travel to Janek’s hut south of the New Camp and locate the book inside. It is not on open display, so look carefully around the room.

Wait for the right moment. Take the book when Janek is not looking at you or has stepped out of the room. Stealing in Gothic depends on skill and time of day, but here, simply timing it well is enough.

Tip: Read the Bestiary after you take it. The three answers Cavalorn wants all come straight from its pages, so a quick read makes the test trivial.

Take the book to Cavalorn

Cavalorn is a lone hunter who lives on the road that runs between the Old Camp and the New Camp, roughly halfway along it. Depending on the time of day, you may find him at a small tent or sitting by a fire. Because characters move freely, wait or scan the area nearby if he is not where you expect.

Speak to Cavalorn and hand him the Bestiary. He immediately recognizes it as more than a picture book and offers to share what he knows about the creatures inside.
Before he teaches you anything, he tests your attention with three questions drawn from the book. Answer all three correctly to pass.

Cavalorn’s three questions and correct answers

Cavalorn asks aboutCorrect answer
The protective platesThey run along the animal’s spine
The sinuses in the skullThey serve to amplify sounds
Pack behaviorThey stick together because it is easier to protect their territory

Each reply follows logically from the Bestiary’s text, so the answers are easy to remember once you have read it.

Reward and how to confirm completion

After all three correct answers, Cavalorn teaches you “Cranial Plate Healing,” a first aid technique for treating serious head injuries on these creatures. You also receive 50 experience points, and the quest is marked as successfully completed in your journal.

You know it worked when the skill is added, and the journal entry closes. If neither happens, you likely missed one of the three answers.

Why the quest will not start or finish

The only hard blocker is the book itself. If you sold the Bestiary or otherwise lost it, you cannot accept or hand in the quest, so keep it until Cavalorn takes it from you.

Hold onto the Bestiary, give the three answers exactly as listed, and “Beasts of Khorinis I” closes out cleanly with the Cranial Plate Healing skill in hand.
