Gothic 1 Remake: How to Finish New Souls for The Brotherhood

Recruit Dusty, bribe the South Gate guard, and earn Baal Tondral's approval for Swamp Camp.

Recruit Dusty, bribe the South Gate guard, and earn Baal Tondral’s approval for Swamp Camp.

New Souls for The Brotherhood is a Chapter 1 side quest in the Gothic 1 Remake, handed out by Baal Tondral in the Swamp Camp. To clear it, you need to convince a digger named Dusty to leave the Old Camp, get him past the South Gate, and walk him back to Baal Tondral. The whole job hinges on having enough Ore Nuggets to bribe a guard, so prepare before you start.

Quick answer: Talk to Baal Tondral in the southeast of the Swamp Camp, ask Melvin who to recruit, find Dusty at Baal Parvez’s evening sermon in the Old Camp Market, pay the South Gate guard 100 Ore Nuggets to let him out, then escort Dusty to Baal Tondral.

Quest requirements and where it starts

This quest belongs to The Brotherhood faction and counts toward the larger Admission to The Swamp Camp main quest. Before you begin, stock up on Ore Nuggets, because you cannot finish the job without paying off a guard.

Baal Tondral preaches to Novices near the blacksmith area in the southeast of the Swamp Camp. Let him finish addressing you, speak to him, and pick the line “How can I prove myself to you?” He asks you to bring someone from the Old Camp into The Brotherhood, which opens the quest.

Find out who to recruit by talking to Melvin

Look for Melvin among the Novices who sit in on Baal Tondral’s lectures. He used to be a digger, which makes him easy to identify in the crowd.
Speak to him and choose “I’m guessing you used to be a digger?” Keep the conversation going until he mentions an old friend named Dusty and suggests you recruit him. Your quest log updates with the new target.

Convince Dusty in the Old Camp

Travel to the Old Camp. Dusty stands in the Market area near the South Gate during the evening, listening to Baal Parvez’s sermon. Time your visit so it is evening, or he may not be there.
Talk to him about joining The Brotherhood and bring up that Melvin has been doing well. He agrees to come along, but warns that the guards know he wants to leave, so you will have to deal with the South Gate.

Note: While you are clearing out Dusty’s hut, his chest opens with the combination R L L L and holds 34 Ore, 3 Coins, and 1 Razor. Once he leaves, that hut becomes a handy spot to use during later trips to the Old Camp.

Bribe the South Gate guard and escort Dusty out

Head to the South Gate near the collapsed tower with 100 Ore Nuggets in your pocket. Only the guards here can be paid off, so this is the route Dusty has to take.
When you speak to the guard, stay polite. Do not insult him, and never tell him you are taking Dusty to the Swamp Camp. Saying either turns the guards hostile. A neutral line like being out for a stroll keeps things calm, and the bribe makes the guard forget the whole thing.
With the gate clear, walk Dusty all the way back to the Swamp Camp. Keep enemies off him during the trip so he arrives safely.

Deliver Dusty to Baal Tondral

Bring Dusty straight to Baal Tondral back in the Swamp Camp. Tondral will not act impressed by your new recruit, but he gives his approval anyway, which is exactly what the quest needs.

You know it worked when the quest closes and Baal Tondral’s support locks in for the Admission to The Swamp Camp main quest. Completing it also awards XP, with the various stages along the way contributing experience as you recruit and move Dusty.

Common reasons the quest stalls

  • You lack 100 Ore Nuggets, so the guard refuses to let Dusty leave.
  • You are rude to the South Gate guard or mention the Swamp Camp, turning the guards hostile.
  • You visit the Old Camp Market at the wrong time and miss Dusty at Baal Parvez’s evening sermon.
  • You skip Melvin, so the quest never points you toward Dusty.

Sort out the Ore Nuggets first, keep your dialogue choices clean at the gate, and Dusty will follow you all the way to The Brotherhood without trouble.
