Black Tides free story quest

Black Tides is the final story chapter for Naoe and Yasuke. Two elite Templars known as “Black Cross” arrive in Japan to hunt the pair, but they carry their own agenda. The quest also seeds a few narrative connections to Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced.

You must clear three pieces of content before Black Tides becomes available:

  • Finish Naoe and Yasuke’s main story.
  • Complete the post-launch quest “A Critical Encounter.”
  • Complete the post-launch quest “A Puzzlement.”

Domains endgame mode

Domains is a new Animus activity built to stress-test your character builds. It spans five maps across 10 challenge levels, and you need to reach level 30 to unlock it. A hacker named MOD creates these simulations, and each run layers on gameplay modifiers that force you to rethink your loadout. Higher difficulties stack more modifiers, and more of them work against you.

On each map you kill the Daishos to open a boss arena, where you face one of three corrupted, Animus-altered bosses while the modifiers stay active. You can spend Animus Exploits to cancel out some negative modifiers, but a weak build will still struggle. One modifier, “Like a Prayer,” surrounds you with a damage-over-time circle that also destroys breakable objects you pass through.

Builds carry over from the main game in both directions. Equipment you already own works inside Domains, and gear you earn there can be used in the main campaign. Animus Exploits, however, only function within Domains. MOD runs an exclusive shop with its own in-game currency, new endgame gear sets, powerful engravings, and a progression tree.

Tip: Don’t ignore Yasuke. Some modifiers are only solvable with a fully built Yasuke loadout, so a maxed-out version of him is worth having ready.

The rewards earned in Domains, including weapons and armor that longtime Animus users may recognize, never appear in the store or the exchange. They are Domain-exclusive and exist purely for bragging rights, plus a set of secret rewards for clearing the hardest levels.

Riptides and Undertow crossover projects

Two new crossover projects, Riptides and Undertow, appear in the Animus HUB. To activate them, complete Anomalies and progress through the reward tiers, just like earlier projects. These give out themed outfits, weapons, trinkets, and more. The rewards span both Shadows and Black Flag Resynced, and you can make progress by completing Anomalies in either game.

Note: These projects are not available on Nintendo Switch 2, because they tie into Black Flag Resynced, which is not releasing on Nintendo platforms.

Horizon Animus Rift

A new Animus Rift called Horizon opens with the update, continuing the Eagle’s information about the Guide. You must complete the two previous Animus Rifts before Horizon becomes accessible.

Quality of life and gameplay changes

The Animus HUB now matches how you access features during gameplay. The System menu is only reachable through the Shadows’ Memory page in the main menu.

Combat and gameplay see several balance adjustments:

  • Shurikens fired from the “Bank Shot” and “Triple Threat” tool mastery upgrades deal more damage.
  • Abilities that destroy enemy armor are now half as effective against bosses.
  • Enemies take fall damage from shorter heights, increasing total fall damage.
  • Damage from enemy “Poison Kunai” and “Explosive Grenades” is reduced.
  • Up to six “Corrupted Castles” are available each season.
  • Fixed the engraving that makes weak point attacks trigger vulnerability a second time.
  • Fixed Yasuke’s knowledge bonus that grants melee or ranged damage reduction.
  • Fixed Naoe’s “Katana Sheath” getting stuck to her.

UI fixes

  • Forge engraving lists are reordered, and a new “Critical Category” has been added.
  • Fixed perks shown in the wrong forge category engraving list.
  • Fixed perks and knowledge skills displaying the wrong icons.
  • Restored the “Damage when Hitting Vulnerable Enemies” perk on the stat sheet.
  • Naoe’s “Peasant Hat Headgear” perk now notes it only triggers below 1 adrenaline.
  • Fixed Yasuke’s “Damage with Combo Enders” bonus showing a value 10 times too high.
  • Pins and world markers now persist through fast travel in Japan and Awaji.

Gear and perk changes

A group of adrenaline perks now scale as a percentage of an adrenaline chunk and were rebalanced to lower values: Adrenaline Tools, Adrenaline on Headshot, Adrenaline on Critical Hit, Adrenaline over half health, Adrenaline under half health, Adrenaline on afflicted enemies, Adrenaline on posture attack, and Adrenaline on vulnerable enemies.

Other notable adjustments:

  • The “Whisper of Gold Long Katana” perk now boosts ability damage by 100% (up from 50%).
  • Naoe’s “Ethereal Cloth Headgear” perk now triggers below 15% health (up from 10%).
  • Naoe’s “Pink Petal Kosode Light Armour” and Yasuke’s “Sakura Bloom Armour” now convert adrenaline to 20% health on death (up from 10%).
  • “Teppo” and “Bow” weapons can now carry armour damage and armour piercing perks.
  • Fixed the “Arrownomics Bow” and “Golden Chamber Teppo” perks being engraveable on amulets.
  • Perks with the “with backstab” condition are now limited to “Tanto” weapons.
  • Ranged-only conditions can no longer be engraved on melee weapons, and melee-only conditions can no longer be engraved on ranged weapons.
  • Fixed “Consecutive Enemy Kills” failing to reset after combat and resetting when damaged.
  • Fixed “Blade of Yumminess” missing from inventory in some cases.

Quest fixes and Switch 2 performance

Three quest progression blockers are resolved: “Gather Mon” no longer stalls during the Anomaly Quest step, “Way of the Blacksmith” no longer loses Heji and his forge from the hideout, and “Lost and Found” stops Sentinel B-Ser.0197 from teleporting out of bounds.

On Nintendo Switch 2, the update brings GPU performance improvements in handheld mode.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Ubisoft Store, along with Mac and Luna. Once Title Update 1.1.11 finishes installing and your version number updates, head to the Animus HUB and your save to confirm Black Tides, Domains, and the Horizon Rift are unlocked according to their requirements.
