Ruan Mei is a 5★ Ice character on the Path of Harmony, and her whole reason for existing is to make the rest of your team hit harder. She buffs damage, increases Weakness Break Efficiency, hands out a rare All-Type RES PEN field, and even chips in Break damage of her own. Building her well comes down to one number, Break Effect, and a handful of stat choices that feed every part of her kit.
Quick answer: Run the 4-piece Watchmaker, Master of Dream Machinations relic set with the Sprightly Vonwacq planar set, equip Past Self in Mirror, and stack substats so your in-battle Break Effect reaches 180% (which includes the 20% from her A2 trace). Body and Sphere take HP% or DEF%, Feet take SPD, and the Link Rope takes Break Effect or Energy Regeneration Rate.

Why 180% Break Effect is the build target
Ruan Mei’s A6 trace, Candle Lights on Still Waters, adds 6% team DMG for every 10% of Break Effect she has above 120%, up to a maximum of 36%. To reach that cap, she needs 180% Break Effect in combat. Her A2 trace, Inert Respiration, already grants 20% Break Effect to all allies, and that 20% counts toward the total even though it does not show on her out-of-combat stat page. In practice that means you only need to build to roughly 160% on the character screen, then the A2 bonus pushes you over the line once a fight starts.
Break Effect does double duty for her. It increases the DMG buff from her A6, and it scales her personal Talent damage, her Ultimate’s enemy delay, and the Thanatoplum Rebloom Break damage. There is almost no wasted Break Effect on Ruan Mei, which is why nearly every part of her build points back to that one stat.

Add to Google Preferences →Best Light Cones for Ruan Mei
Pick a Light Cone based on how much Break Effect your relics already give you and how reliable you want her Ultimate timing to be. Cones with high Break Effect make hitting the 180% threshold far easier and cut down the number of good substats you need.
| Light Cone | Why it works |
|---|---|
| Past Self in Mirror (5★, signature) | +60% Break Effect, +24% team DMG for 3 turns after Ultimate, refunds 1 Skill Point at 150%+ Break Effect, and gives all allies 10 Energy at the start of each wave. The DMG buff ticks down on each ally’s turn rather than hers. |
| In Pursuit of the Wind (best F2P) | SPD boost to help her speed thresholds, plus a team-wide DMG increase after she uses her Skill that lines up with her 3-turn rotation. |
| Memories of the Past (4★) | +56% Break Effect and 8 Energy on attack, which enables a steady 3-turn Ultimate cycle at S5. Strong if you want 100% buff uptime. |
| But the Battle Isn’t Over (5★) | 10% Energy Regeneration Rate and Skill Point recovery for Ultimate consistency, but its 30% DMG buff only hits the next acting ally, so it ranks below team-wide options. |

Best relics and planar ornaments
The 4-piece Watchmaker, Master of Dream Machinations set is the default choice. The 2-piece adds 16% Break Effect, and the 4-piece gives all allies 30% Break Effect for 2 turns when she uses her Ultimate on an ally. Both halves push the team toward the Break Effect threshold while she buffs them.
| Set | Effect |
|---|---|
| Watchmaker, Master of Dream Machinations (best) | 2-Pc: +16% Break Effect. 4-Pc: Ultimate on an ally grants all allies +30% Break Effect for 2 turns. |
| Thief of Shooting Meteor (alt) | 2-Pc: +16% Break Effect. 4-Pc: another +16% Break Effect, plus 3 Energy after she inflicts Weakness Break. |
| Messenger Traversing Hackerspace (for SPD) | 2-Pc: +6% SPD. 4-Pc: Ultimate on an ally gives all allies +12% SPD for 1 turn. |
For planar ornaments, Sprightly Vonwacq is the standout because it advances her action forward at the start of battle when her SPD is 120 or higher, which helps her field uptime. The alternatives trade that for ATK support or extra Break Effect.
| Ornament | Effect |
|---|---|
| Sprightly Vonwacq (best) | +5% Energy Regeneration Rate. At 120+ SPD, action advanced forward 40% on entering battle. |
| Lushaka, the Sunken Seas (alt) | +5% Energy Regeneration Rate. If she is not first in the lineup, +12% ATK to the first character. |
| Talia: Kingdom of Banditry (alt) | +16% Break Effect, plus another 20% at 145+ SPD. |

Stat priority and main stats
Ruan Mei does not build ATK or CRIT. Her personal damage comes entirely from Break Effect through her Talent, so survivability and Break Effect take the slots instead. Aim for Break Effect at 160% or higher on substats, then balance SPD and a defensive stat.
| Slot | Main stat |
|---|---|
| Body | HP% or DEF% |
| Feet | SPD |
| Planar Sphere | HP% or DEF% |
| Link Rope | Break Effect% or Energy Regeneration Rate |
| Substat priority | Break Effect (160%+) > SPD > HP% or DEF% |
Note: If your Link Rope can already cover the Break Effect threshold through substats, an Energy Regeneration Rate rope helps her cast Ultimate on a tighter cycle. Choose based on whether you are short on Break Effect or short on Energy.

Trace leveling priority
Level her Ultimate first. It carries her RES PEN buff and the Thanatoplum Rebloom Break damage, which is the single biggest contribution she makes to team output. Skill and Talent come next and should be raised together, since the Skill drives Weakness Break Efficiency and the Talent provides the permanent SPD boost plus her extra Break damage.
| Trace | Priority |
|---|---|
| Ultimate | Highest |
| Skill | High |
| Talent | High (level alongside Skill) |
| Basic ATK | Lowest, leave unleveled |
One important note on her Skill: the 50% Weakness Break Efficiency does not scale with the Skill’s level, so leveling it only raises the DMG% portion of the buff. Prioritize unlocking her bonus traces, especially A6, so the Break Effect you build actually converts into the full 36% team DMG bonus.
Eidolons worth chasing
Ruan Mei is fully functional at E0, so Eidolons are bonuses rather than requirements. E1 is the most efficient stopping point if you want a little extra, while E6 roughly triples her Talent damage and extends her field by a turn.
| Eidolon | Effect |
|---|---|
| E1 | While her field is up, all allies ignore 20% of the target’s DEF. High uptime and stacks with other DEF reduction. |
| E2 | All allies gain 40% ATK against enemies with Weakness Break, covering a stat her base kit does not. |
| E4 | +100% Break Effect for 3 turns when an enemy’s Weakness is Broken. Minor on its own, mostly a step toward E6. |
| E6 | Extends the Ultimate field by 1 turn and adds 200% to the Talent’s Break DMG multiplier. |

How to play her rotation
Her loop is simple. Use Skill once, then Basic ATK twice. Because the Overtone buff from her Skill lasts 3 turns and ticks down on her own turns, this pattern keeps the DMG and Weakness Break Efficiency buffs permanently active while staying slightly Skill Point positive.
You will know the build is working when her Break Effect reads around 160% on the character screen, then her A2 trace lifts it past 180% in combat to max out the A6 DMG bonus. Watch for light blue Talent damage numbers landing alongside ally Breaks, and confirm the RES PEN field and Thanatoplum Rebloom debuff appear on enemies after each Ultimate. One thing to keep in mind: her Talent damage can land the killing blow and take the kill and Energy, so be careful pairing her with damage dealers that rely on last-hitting enemies.
Best teams for Ruan Mei
Ruan Mei is the cornerstone of Super Break compositions, but her buffs are universal enough to slot into almost any archetype. She works in Break teams, dual-DPS lineups, Damage over Time setups, and single hypercarry teams.
| Archetype | Common partners |
|---|---|
| Super Break | Firefly, Rappa, Boothill, Harmony Trailblazer, Fugue, Lingsha, Gallagher |
| Damage over Time | Kafka, Black Swan, Hysilens, Huohuo |
| DPS hypercarry | Phainon, Jingliu, Blade, Castorice |
Build her once around Break Effect and survivability, and she carries over from team to team without rework. The 180% threshold, a high-Break-Effect Light Cone, and the Watchmaker set are the three pieces that matter most. Everything else is fine-tuning SPD and Energy to keep her field and buffs on the board for as much of each fight as possible.
