Gothic 1 Remake: How to Finish the Swampweed Harvest for the Brotherhood

Collect fresh swampweed from Balor and Viran, clear the Bloodflies, and earn Baal Orun's support.

Collect fresh swampweed from Balor and Viran, clear the Bloodflies, and earn Baal Orun’s support.

The Swampweed Harvest is one of the two jobs Baal Orun hands out in the Swamp Camp, and finishing it is part of earning the Brotherhood’s trust in Gothic 1 Remake. The task is simple to describe and harder to survive. You gather fresh swampweed from two harvesters, deal with a swarm of Bloodflies along the way, and decide who actually gets the harvest at the end.

Quick answer: Complete Ghorim’s Replacement to make Baal Orun talk to you, then collect swampweed from Balor outside the camp and from Viran (kill all 13 Bloodflies near his house first). Deliver both batches to Cor Kalom, then report back to Baal Orun to receive a Sleep Scroll and his support.

What you need before starting the Swampweed Harvest

Baal Orun will not speak to you until you have finished the Ghorim’s Replacement quest. That quest is the gatekeeper, so handle it first.

Bring a ranged weapon. The Bloodfly fight at Viran’s home is the hardest part of joining the Brotherhood, and a bow or crossbow with at least 15 arrows or bolts makes it manageable. A solid melee weapon works if you prefer to fight up close, but ranged is far safer against flying enemies.

Unlock the quest through Ghorim’s Replacement

Go to the herb-mashing arena beneath Baal Orun, where novices crush herbs. Find the novice named Ghorim and talk to him. He will send you to fetch Harlok and tell him to return to his shift.

Look for Harlok near the staircase that leads up to Cor Kalom’s lab, close to Fortuna’s shop. Tell him to go back to work. He refuses, so you have to beat him in a fight. Once he loses, he heads back to his job.
Return to Ghorim in the mashing area and speak with him again to wrap up the quest. Now leave the mashing area and come back a few minutes later. Walk close to Baal Orun, and he will start a conversation, offering you the Swampweed Harvest.

Collect swampweed from Balor

Baal Orun sends you to the harvesters but gives no map markers, so you have to navigate on your own. The first harvester, Balor, lives outside the Swamp Camp.

Start from the mashing area. There is a giant tree with two signs on a branching path just outside. Take the road on the right and follow it through a large hollow tree trunk.
Continue until you reach a big wooden house, then turn left. At the tent, turn right, cross the bridge, and turn right once more. Balor is resting under a sunshade.
Speak with Balor to receive his harvest. He warns you to also collect Viran’s swampweed before going to Cor Kalom, otherwise Cor Kalom may assume you stole part of the batch.

Note: Balor can also reveal the name of a buyer for fresh swampweed, but he wants 50 Nuggets for it. The buyer is a merchant called Cipher, who lives in the tavern on the lake in the New Camp. That detail matters only if you plan to sell the harvest instead of joining the Brotherhood.

Reach Viran and clear the Bloodflies

Viran is the second harvester. He sits on the top floor of a two-storey cottage with a watchtower, located far to the east near the barrier. Heading back into the Swamp Camp first makes the route easier to follow.

Return to the fork with the signs near the mashing area, but this time take the left path. Cross the two wooden bridges, go right at the triple signs, then turn right again at the first crossroad.
Follow the path until you drop into another large tree trunk. Turn left and keep going until you reach Viran’s cottage. Talk to him on the top floor. He will only hand over his swampweed after you kill every Bloodfly around his home.
There are 13 Bloodflies in total, split across four locations. Waiting until morning makes them easier to spot. Clear all four groups and then return to Viran.

Deliver the swampweed: Cor Kalom or Cipher

With both batches in hand, you have a choice that decides where this quest leads.

Where you take itOutcome
Cor Kalom (Swamp Camp)Progresses your Brotherhood membership and the Admission to the Swamp Camp quest. Required if you want to join.
Cipher (New Camp tavern)Rewards you with loot but blocks you from joining the Brotherhood.

If joining the Brotherhood is your goal, return to the Swamp Camp and hand the swampweed to Cor Kalom in his lab. Then speak with Baal Orun afterward to close out the quest. Skipping the trip back to Baal Orun leaves the quest unfinished, so do not forget that final conversation.

How to confirm the quest is done

You know the Swampweed Harvest is complete when you report back to Baal Orun after delivering to Cor Kalom. He recognizes your work, awards a large XP payout, and gives you a Sleep Scroll. He also adds his support toward the Admission to the Swamp Camp quest.

Final deliveryReward
Give the harvest to Cor Kalom and report to Baal OrunSleep Scroll, Baal Orun’s favor, 1100 XP

Hold onto that Sleep Scroll. It is the magic you need to impress Baal Cadar by casting it on one of his pupils, which is the next step toward full membership in the Brotherhood.
