The Gauntlet is the wave-based challenge mode in VV: Ultimatum, holding five fights that hand out titles, permanent buffs, and some of the hardest-to-get items in the game. Getting in is gated behind a single crafted material and a short quest from one NPC, so the fastest route is knowing exactly what to bring before you walk over.
Quick answer: Talk to Edmordt at Fort Adams to start the quest “The Gauntlet,” craft 1x Dark Spirit Alloy from 4x Dark Essence, 1x Great Soul Essence, and 1x Spirit Alloy, then hand it back to him to unlock the mode at the Gelum statue.
What you need to unlock The Gauntlet
The quest starts with Edmordt, who stands beside the statue of Gelum at Fort Adams. That statue is the same one you see during the tutorial, so the spot should already be familiar. Speaking to him unlocks the quest “The Gauntlet,” and the only thing standing between you and the mode is one crafted item.
The quest asks for Dark Spirit Alloy, which is a separate material from the standard Spirit Alloy. You cannot find Dark Spirit Alloy as a drop. You have to craft it from the recipe below.

All five Gauntlet challenges and their waves
There are five challenges in total. Three were in from the start: The Terrible, Dangerous Wanderer, and Predator Chain. Two more, Unparalleled Strength and The Other Side, were added later and stay locked until you beat specific open-world bosses.

How to unlock the two later challenges
Unparalleled Strength stays hidden until you defeat Junichiro and Lord Nivis in the open world. The Other Side requires beating The Parasite and The Grey Hunter first. Clear those bosses and the challenges appear in the statue menu alongside the original three.
Every Gauntlet reward
Each challenge pays out Soul Tokens, a Memory buff, a title, and one or more rare items. The buff values and item types are fixed per challenge, so you can target a specific reward by running the matching fight.

A few of these items are worth flagging. The Clan Token rerolls your clan. Each Experimental Hogyoku Shard rerolls your weapon, and the Token Booster raises Soul Token gains by 25% for 30 minutes. Accessory Tokens recolour a piece of equipment at the Tailors, while the Reiatsu Colour Rerolls change your Reiatsu colour.
How to confirm the unlock worked
You know the unlock is done when interacting with the Gelum statue opens the challenge selection menu instead of the quest prompt. If the statue still points you back to Edmordt, the quest is not complete yet. The usual reason is that the Dark Spirit Alloy has not been crafted or has not been handed in, so re-check the recipe and turn the material in before trying the statue again.
From there, the only thing left is choosing a challenge. Start with the original three if you want quick Clan Tokens and titles, then come back for Unparalleled Strength and The Other Side once you have cleared their gatekeeper bosses in the open world.
