Butcher is one of the earliest major bosses in Purgatorio, the Project Moon–inspired action RPG where you and up to three others run a Fixer office in The City. He shows up as a two-phase fight, starting as a slow machete-swinging brute and transforming into Magnus, Butcher of Depraved Abandon, the Sin of Lust and Indulgence.
Quick answer: Promote your office to Grade 7 and take the “Masked Brute” urgent request to spawn Butcher. Clear his simple combos in phase one, then win clashes against Magnus in phase two to stagger him. Defeating him always drops the Lust/Indulgence Sin Resonance.
How to trigger the Butcher fight
Butcher does not appear on demand. You reach him by progressing your office through jobs and requests until it promotes to Grade 7. At that grade, the “Masked Brute” urgent request becomes available, and completing that request is what puts you face to face with him.
Note: If you hire Maya on this request, you can unlock the questline for the Envy Sin, provided you meet certain conditions during the run.

Add to Google Preferences →Phase 1: The Butcher moveset
The first phase is straightforward. Butcher fights with a serrated machete and telegraphs everything clearly, so most of his attacks are easy to read and punish once you learn the patterns.
| Attack | What happens |
|---|---|
| 2-hit combo | Two machete swings in sequence. |
| 3-hit combo (dash) | Two swings, then a dashing forward slash on the third hit. |
| 3-hit combo (punch) | Two swings, then a punch that knocks you back and leaves you prone. |
| Leg kick | A single kicking attack. |
Tip: After each attack, Butcher pauses in place for a short moment. Use that window to slip in a quick hit, or reset your spacing to dodge his next combo.
Phase 2: Magnus, Butcher of Depraved Abandon
When Butcher’s first health bar runs out, he gives in to the voices and unleashes the beast inside, transforming into Magnus, Butcher of Depraved Abandon, the Sin of Lust and Indulgence. He grows larger, takes on monstrous features, and gains extra red arms that drive his new attacks.

This phase is far more dangerous. Magnus swings with his multiple arms and mixes in an unclashable grab, so you need to stay aware of which attack is coming before you commit.
| Attack | What happens |
|---|---|
| 5-hit combo | Three fast arm swings, a slam with all four limbs, then a small-radius AOE around him. |
| 3-hit combo | Two arm swings followed by a hit from his upper red arm. |
| Grab (unclashable) | His upper red arms grab you for heavy damage. It cannot be clashed. |
| Scream | Around half HP, repeated screams hit everyone and cut their HP to 50%. |
Clashing tactics against Magnus
Clashing is the core of this phase. The Guilty Pleasure stack lowers his clash power by 3, which makes most clashes easy to win and builds Starvation stacks while staggering him quickly.
- Every clash you win causes Magnus to apply Paralyze to himself.
- After the scream applies the Plaything status and cuts your HP to 50%, clash him. He carries 3 Impaired stacks then, reducing his clash power further.
- When you stagger him, he heals you for 5 times your Plaything stacks worth of percentage HP.
- Watch for the grab while clashing. It is not clashable, so track the red Korean letters above his head and dodge it. A dodged grab makes him apply Paralyze to himself.
Butcher drops and rewards
Beating both phases rewards a guaranteed Sin Resonance plus a chance at three cosmetic and weapon drops. The Lust/Indulgence Sin Resonance drops every time, so you are always guaranteed something for the clear.
| Drop | Chance |
|---|---|
| Lust/Indulgence Sin Resonance | 100% |
| Serrated Machete | 34% |
| Butcher Mask | 33% |
| Butcher’s Attire | 33% |
Design and inspirations
Butcher represents the Sin of Lust and Indulgence, and his two forms pull from recognizable horror and gacha designs. His first-phase look draws on Jason Voorhees and The Trapper, while the transformed Magnus takes cues from the Dead End Butcher in Zenless Zone Zero.
Once Magnus falls, the Masked Brute request completes and pushes your office further along its promotion path. Bank the Sin Resonance, and if any of the machete, mask, or attire drops rolled in your favor, you can equip them for later runs.
