Terraria: How to Get the Zoologist NPC (Requirements and Items Sold)

The two spawn conditions that make the Zoologist move in, plus a full breakdown of what she stocks.

The two spawn conditions that make the Zoologist move in, plus a full breakdown of what she stocks.

The Zoologist is a town vendor added in Terraria’s Journey’s End (1.4) update, and she sells animal-themed vanity, mounts, pets, critter accessories, and eventually the Universal Pylon. Getting her to move in comes down to two things happening at the same time, and both are within reach early in a playthrough.

Quick answer: Fill the Bestiary to at least 10% (55 entries) and keep one valid, empty house available. Once both are true, the Zoologist can move in on any following day.

Zoologist spawn requirements

She is a pre-Hardmode NPC, so you do not need to defeat any boss to unlock her. Meet the two conditions below and she will arrive.

RequirementDetail
Bestiary progressAt least 10% filled, which equals 55 entries
HousingOne valid, vacant house available for her to occupy

After both boxes are ticked, she does not appear instantly. She can move in on any day from that point onward, so give it a day cycle or two if she is not there right away.

Fill the Bestiary to 10%

The Bestiary is a catalog that records every creature, enemy, NPC, and boss you meet. You add an entry by killing a creature with any weapon at your disposal. Repeated encounters expand each entry with stats, drop rates, and spawn details.

Reaching 55 entries happens naturally through normal exploration and combat. Clear surface critters and common enemies across a few biomes and you will cross the 10% line quickly. A progress bar at the bottom of the Bestiary screen shows exactly how close you are.

Build a valid house for her

Her housing needs match those of most vendors. Use the Housing menu’s query tool (“?”) on a room to confirm it counts as valid before expecting her to settle.

  • Structural walls and a ceiling made from blocks that evil biomes cannot corrupt, such as Stone or Wood
  • Player-placed background walls so enemies cannot spawn inside
  • An entrance, usually a door or platform
  • A flat-surface item such as a Table, Work Bench, or Dresser
  • One comfort item such as a Chair, Sofa, or Bed
  • Any light source, even a single Torch
  • A room of at least 60 tiles in total area

If the query tool reports “This is not valid housing,” fix the missing element and try again. Once she occupies a room, the query tool shows her portrait inside it, which confirms she has moved in.

What the Zoologist sells

Her stock is not fixed. Some items are always in the shop, while others unlock at higher Bestiary percentages, after certain bosses fall, during specific moon phases, or during events. The full lineup is below.

Where to place her for cheaper prices and a pylon

Her happiness controls her prices and whether she will sell you a biome pylon. Higher happiness lowers costs and unlocks the Forest Pylon when she lives in the Forest with enough favor.

LovesWitch Doctor
LikesForestPrincess, Golfer
DislikesDesertAngler
HatesArms Dealer

Set her up in a Forest home with the Witch Doctor or Golfer nearby, and keep the Angler and Arms Dealer away, to get her lowest prices and access to the Forest Pylon.

Good to know

The Zoologist transforms into a werefox during a full moon or Blood Moon. This changes her sprite and quotes but nothing about gameplay, and she reverts at dawn (4:30 AM). If she is threatened, she defends herself with claw strikes, dealing 15 damage early on and gaining stat boosts as you progress.

Note: In the secret Vampirism world seed, the Zoologist replaces the Guide as the starting NPC. Outside that seed, the Bestiary is already at 10% or more when she is present, so the Squirrel Hook, Leather Whip, and Koi Kite are available immediately. In Vampirism worlds, those three are not stocked from the start.

With a valid empty house standing and 55 Bestiary entries logged, she is one of the easiest vendors to secure early, and steadily filling the Bestiary afterward keeps expanding her shop all the way to the Universal Pylon.
